| I woke up at 3am with the radio on and that Gladys Knight song on ... | dbi Aug 14, 2002 11:04 AM | | talking about bout how she'd rather live in his world with him than in her own world alone and I laid there, head spinning, trying to sleep, and I thought to myself Gladys, girl, I love you but get a life.
So, how many of you Plan fans like Is Terrified and what are your favorites? I was thinking of putting a song on the Davey <s>& Snowie</s> 1997 Retro comp but can't decide if I should or which one. To be honest, it isn't one of my favorites so I might not but a couple of the songs I do really like.
Just for reference, the tracklist is kinda like this right now but will likely change a lot by the time <s>we're</s> I'm finished ...
Modest Mouse - Heart Cooks Brain
Finley Quaye - Sunday Shining
Laika - Prarie Dog
Bjork - Unravel
OP8 w/ Lisa Germano - If I Think Of Love
Luna - Pup Tent
Radiohead - Karma Police
Spiritualized - I Think I'm In Love
The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
Walt Mink - Lovely Arrhythmia
Robert Wyatt - Heaps of Sheeps
Helium - Devil's Tears
Built To Spill - I Would Hurt A Fly
Yo La Tengo - Autumn Sweater
Paul K & The Weathermen - Liar's Prayer
James McMurtry - Sixty Acres
Pavement - Stereo
Sleater-Kinney - It's Enough
Any other suggestions and/or comments encouraged and appreciated although much of the stuff I was buying back then I only have on vinyl which I can't use since I only have a computer burner. I was thinking of maybe adding some Toni Braxton or something like that to spice it up. Whadaya think? TIA |
| OH, get a LIFE! | Rae Aug 14, 2002 11:22 AM | | What's not to love about Is Terrified? It's a party record where Emergency and Change aren't; some of the most fun Plan songs are on it like "Do the Standing Still," "Bra," and "Academy Award." Sure, it may not be as consistent or as deep as their later records but it makes me smile...
And I can't believe you're going to do a 1997 indie rock mix without including something from Either/Or! Boo!!!
throwing candy out to the crowd
dragging down the main
the helpless little thing with the dirty mouth who's always got something to say
you're sitting around at home now waiting for your brother to call
I saw him down in the alley
having had enough of it all
said you can do what you want to whenever you want to
you can do what you want to there's no one to stop you
all spit and spite you're up all night and down every day
a tired man with only hours to go just waiting to be taken away
getting in to the back of a car for candy from some stranger
watching the parade with pinpoint eyes full of smoldering anger
you can do what you want to whenever you want to
you can do what you want to there's no one to stop you
now you can do what you want to whenever you want to
do what you want to whenever you want to
do what you want to whenever you want to though it doesn't mean a thing
big nothing...

| I only have Either/Or on vinyl | dbi Aug 14, 2002 11:28 AM | | I like Respect Is Due the best but you probably guessed that :-) |
| Sometimes those internet searches don't work... | Snowbunny Aug 15, 2002 7:24 AM | | Those lyrics sound like they should be from Dismemberment Plan, but I couldn't find them anywhere. I do know Respect is due, is a Plan song, but what's Either/Or?
Thanks, Davey
Am I in the dog/bunny house? ;-))) |

| er.. Elliott Smith (two t's in Elliott) (nt) | Masonjar Aug 15, 2002 7:38 AM | | |
| Yeah, what he said | dbi Aug 15, 2002 8:21 AM | | The lyrics are from the song "Ice of Boston" from the 1997 release "The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified" and like Rae so astutely points out, it's much more a party album than their two subsequent releases with much less emphasis I think on the song structures and especially the vocals. I'll include a couple tracks on the "goodies" disc :-)
The Ice of Boston:
Pop open a bottle of bubbly
yeah.
Heres to another goddamn new year.
And outside, 2 million drunk Bostonians
Are getting ready to sing Auld Lang Sine
out of tune.
I sit there in my easy chair, looking at the clouds, orange with celebration
And I wonder if youre out there.
Hey! The ice of Boston is muddy
And reflects no light, in day or night
And I slip on it every time
Pop open a third bottle of bubbly
Yeah, and I take that bottle of champagne
Go into the kitchen, stand in front of the kitchen window
And I take all my clothes off, take that bottle of champagne
And I pour it on my head, feel it cascade through my hair
And across my chest, and the phone rings.
And its my mother.
And she says HI HONEY HOWS BOSTON?
And I stand there, all alone on New Years Eve
Buck naked, drenched in champagne, looking at a bunch of strangers
Uh, looking at them, looking at me, looking at them, and I say:
Oh, Im fine Momhows Washington?
Hey! The ice of Boston is muddy
And reflects no light, in day or night
And I slip on it every time
Hey! The ice of Boston is muddy
And reflects no light, in day or night
And I slip on it every time, time, time, time, yeah
So I guess the party line is I followed you up here.
Well, I dont know about that.
Mainly because knowing about that would involve knowing some pathetic, ridiculous, and absolutely true things about myself that Id rather not admit to right now.
Woke up at 3 A.M. with the radio on, that Gladys Knight and the Pips song on
About how shed rather live in his world with him
Than live in her own world alone
And I lay there, head spinning, trying to fall asleep
And I thought to myself: Oh, Gladys, girl, I love you but, ohget a life!
Hey! The ice of Boston is muddy
And reflects no light, in day or night
And I slip on it every time
Hey! The ice of Boston is muddy
And reflects no light, in day or night
And I slip on it every time |
| Buck naked drenched in champagne looking at a bunch of strangers | Snowbunny Aug 15, 2002 10:19 AM | | ...that sounds like my New Year's Eve 2001. ;-)
Thanks, Sugarbear. I love his lyrics!
Sugarbuns
I'd rather live in his world
than live without him, in mine
my world is his, his, and his alone
(Now Gladys, I can quote! :) |

Snowie
Hey, if tiny Jar turns out to be a girl, her song could be, "She's a Jar", by Wilco.
Sorry, going through a Wilco stage at the moment. :-) |
| I like that song a lot too... | Masonjar Aug 15, 2002 10:46 AM | | though it's kinda sad.. esp the last verse:
She's a jar
With a heavy lid
My pop quiz kid
A sleepy kisser
A pretty war
My feelings hid
She begs me not to hit her
I think I'll pick something a little more upbeat ;-)

| I slip on it every time.. | Masonjar Aug 14, 2002 11:37 AM | | man, I guess I wasn't buying much "new" stuff back in 1997.. I can't come up with much of anything..
Laika - Sounds of the Satellites
Stereolab - Dots and Loops
Spring Heel Jack - Busy Curious Thirsty
Roni Size - Reprezent
Helium - Magic City
god, what was going on back then?
oh yah.. lack of funds......lol.
anyway..must..work..

| OUCH! | Snowbunny Aug 14, 2002 11:49 AM | | LOL!
Guess its time to start sucking up, eh, Davey. Where should I start? ;-)
I like it so far, but I'm gonna have to hear Heeps of Sheeps? before it gets my final stamp of approval. :-)
Sleater-Kinney as a closer? Hmmm... I'll have to hear that one, too! Is it a rocker? I'll get back to you rivate-like, once I find out from Rae what all the cool songs were in 1997. ;-)
Oh, and Davey, the only difference between a woman and a man dating a much younger person is, the woman knows she looks ridiculous. :-)))
Luv ya Sugar! |
| Men don't care if they look ridiculous. That's the difference. ;-) (nt) | Slosh Aug 16, 2002 6:32 AM | | |
| This Is The Life, of course :-) | Slosh Aug 14, 2002 12:58 PM | | I would probably ditch Karma Police and use Lucky instead, but hey, it's not my comp.
Nothing from In The Aeroplane Over The Sea? I know it was recorded in '96/'97 but I'm not sure when it was actually released.
Hmmm, I'm drawing a blank too.
NP: Death Cab For Cutie The Photo Album |
| I believe the judges declared it a 1998 release :-( | Snowbunny Aug 14, 2002 1:07 PM | | Too bad, though. You could probably fill up half the comp with NMH selections.
Snowie - trying to look like she had a bigger part in choosing the music for this most excellent comp! :-))) |
| Hey, I'd like to take credit for some of dbi's comps :-) | Slosh Aug 14, 2002 1:32 PM | | You know, pass them out to non-RR friends and let them think they're my handywork. Just kidding, Dave. |
| And that would be wrong, because... :-) | Snowbunny Aug 14, 2002 2:51 PM | | Non-RR buddies? Why didn't I think of that?
As you well know, Whopperboy, I have on occasion used his gems as musical currency. With his permission, of course!
SnowBB |
| Yeah, what she said | dbi Aug 14, 2002 1:42 PM | | Hey Snowbuns, I'll try to send you a coupla three (isn't that how they talk in Audio Girl land?) discs tomorrow. One will be kind of like I just posted, the next will be the same thing but with some of the transitions subtly tweaked, and the third will be a bunch of extras. You can pick and choose and combine with your own stuff (or even solicit contributions from and collaborations with others) to make the perfect mix ;-)
In this life that we call home

| Don't forget to include something from your awesome Tuesday rotation list... | RPM Aug 14, 2002 2:31 PM | | Did Yanni put out anything in '97? |
| My heart's a bitter buffalo... | Snowbunny Aug 14, 2002 3:06 PM | | Oh, maybe that's what's wrong with me? I hate when that happens. :-(
Thanks, Honeybabe. 1995 arrived today, so I can dispense with the ear protection this evening.
Now you know I'm not a good tweaker, Davey, so I'll just tack my selections onto the end of the comp. I see Tricky's got one of the albums I was looking for! ;-)
Sugarbuns |
| Snowbuns...that was a good one, eh??? ;-) nt | Audio Girl Aug 14, 2002 6:26 PM | | nt |
| Lucky Karma Police | dbi Aug 14, 2002 4:51 PM | | I actually was gonna use Lucky but then remembered I had already used it on a couple other comps and Karma Police was the big MTV heavy rotation song from the album so decided to go with that and it does kinda fit too. But most people have the album so it doesn't really matter what you pick since it's been comped pretty heavy around here. It also adds a little familiarity which means I can slip in a couple more obscure songs around it without getting too far off course :-)
And it's just about all new to Senorita Corona so I'm sure she'll give it a fresh twist - wait'll you hear Jewel open for Radiohead ;-) |
| for a minute there I lost myself.. | Masonjar Aug 15, 2002 10:24 AM | | so like the first time I heard "Karma Police" I really didn't care for it.. it was while watching the video on a TV.. just a tv, no stereo set up. The song just didn't do much for me at all, thought it was pretty boring.. Then later I heard "Paranoid Android" again while watching the video (cool animation), on a plain tv, again without benefit of hi-fi audio enhancement. Song is somewhat more enjoyable than "Karma" - more exciting, but comes across (as far as what I remember hearing then) as a mess..
Dismissed OK COMPUTER based on those experiences.
A few years and a million glowing reviews later, I decide to finally pick up OK COMPUTER and am completely blown away.. love the whole thing, even "Karma Police" has grown on me as a brilliant piece of music making..
just goes to show you how first impressions aren't always worth paying attention to...
