tonyw's 1972 Retro CompPwrPopGuy

Got this one yesterday, along with Tony's '71 comp and have been spinning it today. It starts off with an anthem from the summer of '72, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, then Stevie Wonder picks up with "Superstition" (that intro drum beat sounds great on disc). Starting with the next track, Family's"Burlesque" takes the comp into "deep cuts" territory and the only time any well-known hits show up again are with 25 or 6 to 4, Coconut, The World Is a Ghetto, and Hold Your Head Up. Otherwise, this is a retro comp exactly like I envisioned when I thought of the "retro" comps idea: a trip back to a particular year where the lesser-heard, rarer cuts are the primary focus. Several tunes here I had never heard prior to getting this comp including the ones by Family, Manassas, Slade, the super-funky "Red Hot Chicken" by Wet Willie, and Roy Buchanan's EXCELLENT performance of the old Patsy Cline song, "Sweet Dreams". In addition, I had not heard Yes's cover of "America" in years and this recording sounds superb- a refreshing trip back to the early 70's. This is a really solid collection, tonyw, with very interesting track choices. The only thing I would have done differently is use the long version of "Hold Your Head Up", even if having to omit something else. Can't wait to get into '71. Rating ****

...after hearing that Sweet Dreams track on the above-reviewed comp by tonyw. Only $7.47!! Thanks to tonyw and that RMP guy who recommended Deep Discount last week. So, here's an example where a home-made comp works in FAVOR of the record company. Who'da thunk it?!

Thank you for the kind words Rick.
This was a lot of fun to do. The only version of Hold Your Head up I have is a 7 inch single from '72 so I had to have a guy I know download this from the web and it was listed as the long version, when I transfered the disc to my hard drive only then did I notice that it wasn't. I needed to get this finished so I had to go with what I had.
The Manassas track was going to be "It Doesn't Matter", a song I love, but "the Treasure" has that awesome time change in the middle so thats why I went with it.
Looking forward to your '71 review. Enjoy.

Thanks Tony. I've been listening to 1971 and 1972 over the past two days. There's some fine music here, a lot of which is new to me. It's all very enjoyable. My first memories of AM radio are the big hits Spinnin' Wheel by Blood Sweat and Tears, and One by Three Dog Night. I don't know what years they were from. But the first album I bought, on the insistance of my brother, was Alice Cooper's School's Out. I haven't heard this album in a long time, but it does bring back some memories of pre-teenage childhood. It would only be a few more years before I discovered Yes, ELP, Triumvirat, etc. (1974 and 1975).
