Do you keep a log of the new titles you purchase?PwrPopGuy
Aug 15, 2002 6:46 AM
I've never actually done this but I think that starting with the next new CD purchase that comes in (any day now), I'll log the date purchased, title, etc. onto the computer. Also, I'll enter comments about impressions on initial listen, and come back later after I've heard it a few times and list fave tracks, overall grade, etc. Maybe I'll go back through my collection and try to remember what I've purchased this year, and start the database. For one thing, it will be easier to go back at the end of the year and make a "best-of" comp from the discs I purchased through the year. Do any of you do this logging of discs you buy? Do you include comps, or just label-released discs?
Clarification on above...PwrPopGuy

...I said in the above post "a log of the new titles you purchase" but I didn't really mean "new", I meant to include new purchases of older titles, as well.

it's at the end of my here. No dates or other annotations on either but they are in approximate chronological order. Sounds like a good idea, PPG. I wish I did have dates on everything.
What was that? You're looking for dates???Snowbunny

Ohhh, that kind of date... never mind. ;-)
Not yet, but I plan to, Audio Hunk ;-)Snowbunny

Hee hee hee...

One thing I do try to keep up, is a database of the songs from all the comps I receive. That way I don't look so stupid when I review a comp and say, "This is the first time I've heard, say, Rage Against The Machine, when in fact, I have a number of songs by them on comps I've only listened to once or twice. Its also helpful if I want to make a comp of my favourite songs from RR Buddies.

And speaking of Rage Against The Machine can you believe I've been singing along to these lyrics:

just victims of the in-house drive by
they say jump you say how high

A BULLET IN YOUR HEAD
A BULLET IN YOUR HEAD
YOU GOT A BULLET IN YOUR @##$*& HEAD
YEAAHHHHH

You may be interested to note that playing air guitar while listening to these tunes, is not necessarily gender-specific behaviour! ;-)

YEAAH, I saida hunka, hunka burnin' love, YEAHH!! (in tribute to the King, who's 25th death anniversary is tomorrow, folks :-( Sugarbunny, please watch what you find yourself singing, those lyrics are just horribly violent! I remember when I was in the military years ago, there was this guy in the barracks who had this song he used to have cranked up you could hear down the hallways, the main lyrics were: "oops, upside your head, I said, Oops! Upside Your Head!" Man, how times have changed.
I like the idea of a database of songs on comps, I'll have to consider doing that too.

Never seen a Snowbunny doing air guitar, but I'd sure love to...

Why yes, you are. ;-)

Hey, we actually had a music-related discussion at work yesterday, and we were pondering whether kids 20 years from now would appreciate, or even have heard of, Elvis. One of the girls who has small kids said, her little ones were totally in to Elvis after seeing the Disney movie, Lilo and Stitch which uses a lot of Elvis songs. Cool, eh?

A little less conversation, a lot more action...

Probably just the actual purchases, since comps are usually theme based.

I started writing the artist & title of newly purchased LP's in a notebook back in the early 70's. This was because I'd just spent TOO much time making a listing all my albums; something I'd decided I needed(?) to do. After that decision, it became a habit, sort of part of the ritual of this crazy hobby. There were a few times when even this supposedly "quick" listing would become a chore... after a particularly huge load of LPs or CDs (50-100). I now have 3 notebooks full. I have another notebook that's cross-referenced by type (class, jazz, Amer-R&R, etc) and then further cross-referenced alphabetically, but I stopped that many years ago... just too much damn work.

After getting my PC, I thought it would be nice to compile all my stuff on a database/list because of the ability to look-up and search for stuff by artist, or year, or producer, etc. But when I "ran the numbers", I figured out it would take me literally months and months of 8-hour days/40-hr weeks (a very real percentage of ALL the time I will probably still live!)... based partly in my limited typing speed (slowed even further by the minutia of disc#'s and dates, track title's etc), and based partly on my huge collection.

Another friend I know thought he'd get his kids to do all the work (typing) for him. But I remembered reading an issue of "Hi Fi News and Record Review" back in the 80's that mentioned an online servive (nominal fee) that let you scan (online) through a database of artists/titles and simply check off those you had. You then get a downloaded database/program on your PC that you could search, list, print or whatever. By simply clicking your mouse once (1 second's work) you'd have, for example, all the cuts on "Rubber Soul"... the date it was released, the producer, song-credits, etc, etc. I don't remember the company, but there must be a few such services out there. I haven't investigated them myself, because it would STILL take me hours and hours of work, something I've decided isn't worth the effort. I rely mostly on the failing computer inside me noggin... errors be damned.

Yes, Yes , Yes!!!!!!
Since going to CD's (1993) I have amassed quite a collection on music(a lot of reissues, boxed sets, double cd volumes as well a items on vinyl I have replaced on CD)
plus all the comps I make for myself and my friends that I give away. At last count I have over 900 discs in hand.
About 4 months ago I was upgraded to Windows Professional suite on my work computer. It was then that I decided to catagoize ALL my music . So using Excel I built a spreadsheet that lists 5 columns ,Artist, Title,Label,Label section number, and general comments(eg. reissue, remastered, UK issue, EC (I purchase a lot of Imports).
Writting down what I had was the most labor intensive
but keystroking took little time . So every time I purchase
something new(used) or create a cd for myself i log in the entry. Same if I sell ,give away etc items. Also the list prints out very nice if there is a need for a printed list .
Good luck with all your ventures folks.
