| State Songs | JDaniel Aug 16, 2002 7:01 AM | | I was drivin around last night with a Lyle Lovett cd in, and it occurred to me that two songs from that cd had state names in the title - (1) North Dakota & (2) That's Right (You're Not From Texas).
I got to thinking about a "state" comp. What other songs have state titles in them? If nothing else, makes for good Friday discussion.
Others that come to mind:
California (several - Calif. Dreaming, Calif. Girls etc.)
Sweet Home Alabama (Skynrd)
Devil Went Down to Georgia (CDB)
Carolina on My Mind (JT)
NY Minute (Don Henley)
What are some others?

| Ummm, three of those are about cities, not states... | Swish Aug 16, 2002 2:04 PM | | and the taunting continues! NY, NY is about the city, he ain't saying the name of the state twice. Kansas CITY is self-explanatory, and Boston was still a city last time I checked. You old guys just don't follow instructions very well now do you? :-)))
Your buddy,
Swish
Did BTO do any state songs? I can only think of "American Woman", and I think America is a country. :-p |

| State Songs | stupidestboy Aug 16, 2002 11:15 AM | | so i clicked, expecting to read about state songs( http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Ay9h9keftaq7v ), the side project of john linnell (of they might be giants). if you're looking for a certain state to round out your comp, this would be a great place to start. i own it, but like so many of the albums i own, i haven't been able to listen to it enough to really say whether i could recommend it or not. i'll go with the easiest answer: recommended if you are a big TMBG fan and own all their major releases. there's also a TMBG song called "new york city." here's the tracklist for a mix my friend made titled "random songs about minne(sota)apolis" vic volare - i'm gonna miss minneapolis cleveland bound death sentence - minneapolis public transit song #2 abc - minneapolis lemon interrupt - minneapolis guckenheimer sour kraut band - gruss aus minneapolis tom daily - minneapolis that dog - minneapolis the legendary jim ruiz group - minneapolis bill janovitz - minneapolis mason jennings - southern minnesota neil landstrumm - minneapolis bass treatment kind of like spitting - we got as far as minnesota andre nickatina - bakin' soda in minnesota dandy warhols - minnesota gear daddies - minnesota polka snooze - minnesota mantalo ace troubleshooter - chilly minnesota weird al yankovic - the biggest ball of twine in minnesota dictators - the minnesota strip wendy & lisa - minneapolis #1 pinetop seven - a friend to the minnesota strangler converge - minnesota tom waits - christmas card from a hooker in minneapolis the tom waits song is so good. |

| the Dambuilders have enough to fill a comp | cc Aug 17, 2002 12:12 PM | | An indie band in Boston around the mid-90s, they made it kind of a thing to write "state" songs. Though maybe not all of them made it to their recordings.
A terribly arrogant bunch of indie rockers, by the way. Eric Masunaga later became something of a producer. |
| ha! | Rae Aug 17, 2002 12:28 PM | | I have a bunch of Dambuilders records, for some reason... Against the Stars, ¡Encendedor!, Ruby Red... by far the best thing that I have of theirs is the "Break Up With Your Boyfriend" promo single, where the b-side is a guy talking about their marketability ("The Dambuilders are one of the most exciting groups in alternative music today!," etc.). Very funny stuff. That song was catchy as fuck, tho. It seems like they had a knack for writing one great single and a dozen forgettable songs per album. "Shrine," "Teenage Loser Anthem,"...
