| What's The Most Recent CD(s) You've Purchased... | Audio Girl Aug 16, 2002 8:03 AM | | that you would highly recommend to all RRers? It does not have to be a new release, but new releases are welcome. :-).
Mine include:
1. Trespassers William - "Anchor"
2. Bruce Springsteen - "The Rising"
Anyway, I am looking to purchase some new tunes this weekend so your recs would be appreciated. Thanks! |
| hmmm, that second criteria makes it tough... | RPM Aug 16, 2002 8:26 AM | | <<<that you would highly recommend to all RRers>>>
We've got a tough crowd here you know ;-). It certainly wouldn't be the Cenospecies disc that Rae kindly picked up for me. Not that I don't like it, but it's hip-hop, which is usually about as welcome here at Raverecs as Yech in a convent. ;-)
I had an opportunity recently to borrow Gomez's new disc "In Our Gun" and it's currently on my wishlist. Very safe rec for the RR's crowd too. :-)

| Well, I've learned my lesson about general recommendations ... | dbi Aug 16, 2002 9:15 AM | | so usually avoid them these days, but if there is such a thing, Mark Mulcahy's last album would probably be my choice. SmileSunseT. One of the best of 2001. Supposedly one of Thom Yorke's (Radiohead) favorites and definite similarities to the Buckley's (father & son). He has one of the most distinctive and expressive voices in pop music today and the songs are all beautifully melodic. Reminds me a little of another not very well known talent, Ron Sexsmith. Not sure if you could find it at a local store thoughsince it is on the small Mezzotint label. I did recommend it not long ago to our buddy Swish but not sure if he ever got it.

| Here's 3 | Troy Aug 16, 2002 9:18 AM | | Doves- The Last Broadcast. Trippy and sinister psychedelia. Similar to their "Lost Souls" album, but a bit lusher and more song oriented. The tracks "Sulpher Man" and "Words" have me totally hooked. Comes with a bonus disc so you get a lot of toons the the $.
Bill Nelson- Playtime. This is disc 6(!) in the newly released "Noise Candy" box set. It's the standout of the pile. Arty surreal pop built in his attic home studio over the last few years, like much his other work, it's put together quickly and is not labored over too much- a sonic sketchbook drawn by a deft master. This guy really thinks in a totally different way from the rest of us.
Tony Levin- Pieces of the Sun. Monster instrumental fusion release. Unlike the other Levin releases which are quite light and newagey, this one totally rocks. This time he's in the studio with his ex- Peter Gabriel bandmates Jerry Morotta and Larry Fast making for a massive rhythm section with a frosting of Fasts (also known as "Synergy" in the 70s) spacy layered synth work. Really powerful and exciting stuff. More organic and less jammy than the Levin's BLS and LTE projects. |
| A big bad bunch... | Swish Aug 16, 2002 10:15 AM | | Tresspassers William - Anchor
Guided By Voices - Universal Truths...
My Morning Jacket - At Dawn
Soundtrack of Our Lives - Behind the Mask
Walt Mink - El Producto
South - From Here One In
Gram Parsons - Anthology
The Blasters - Anthology
The Hives - Vini, Vidi, Verci (or somethin' like that!!!)
and I can't friggin' remember the others, but at least 5 or 6 others. |
| Who's your Grandaddy! | Snowbunny Aug 16, 2002 10:21 AM | | Sorry, just thought I'd say that before Sloshy did. ;-)
If you enjoy poignant songs about broken-down, obsolete computers, and who doesn't, you might enjoy Grandaddy - Sophtware Slump, Mary.
Its not a new release but it was one of my most recent purchases. Its one of those rare recordings that you can listen to over and over without tiring of it, and hear something different everytime. You may have heard He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot on one of Davey's comp. Do give it a pre-listen before you decide, however, as it is a bit of a concept album.
Since I live in a town with very limited access to small label music, I usually download a few songs from an album to see if I like it before ordering the album. I can't believe how many bands allow you to preview their entire new release on the band's website. Case in point, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.
Enoy the hunt, Audio Babe, and we should talk about a trade soon. I'd love one of your comps! :-)

Very nice Americana stuff, standard Lost Highway material. |

2. Weezer-Pinkerton (very disappointed)
3. Rush - Vapor Trails
Thinking of getting some Rolling Stones after hearing some actual albums of theirs in a friend's car. Their B-side stuff is much more interesting than their popular stuff. |

| Mystery To Me- Hey, great LP, why'd ya sell it? | DLD Aug 16, 2002 8:44 PM | | i've got a VG copy and an NM copy on LP. BUT, I play the dang things so much, I wanted something that would never wear out, ya know, perfct sound forever? Up coming soon, Mac-Nuggets. it will be Fleetwwod Mac, Mid Period, plus a bunch of solo/supporting stuff by various members of the group (Bob Welsh, Paris, Christine Perfect, Mick Feeetwood, Lindsay Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Kenny Loggins, John Stewart). Oh yea, we hit Patrizios and Cozymels tonight plus White Russians at home, guess whose looped? |
| Bob Seger & The Sliver Bullet Band: Live Bullet (remaster) | 3-LockBox Aug 19, 2002 10:55 AM | | Very good sonics (as does the Stranger In Town remaster). It has my favorite versions of Traveling Man/Beautiful Loser and Ramblin Man, but the whole thing is hands down better than Nine Tonight. It is a milestone of sorts; an era when Seger became more popular, less hungry, and complacent. He had something to prove with this performance. While the albums that followed were very good (Night Moves, Stranger In Town) if not somewhat formulaic, Against The Wind ear-marks his turn to adult contemporary pablum. Everything since has been maudlin at best. |
