So has anyone besides RPM &Finch listened to Bruford comps?HYFI

I never seem to get much feedback on my comps and was just wondering if anybody at least gave them a spin. Alot of time and effort along with great contributions from many, went into this set of tunes. Even if you think it sucked I would just like to know it was listened to 1 time.

Good point Brian, I think we're all guilty (I know I am) of not posting comments (even a quick sentence or 2) on some of the comps received. Each one of us who's made one up knows there's alot of time and effort put into these things, of course no one is complaining about that time & effort since this is our hobby. But as you point out, not getting any feedback sure does take the wind out the sails.

I think you're fairly new to this comp trading thing, and I think we've all become a bit complacent toward receiving them. I still listen to each one (OK, there might be an exception in there), but sometimes regular life gets in the way, and next thing you know it gets put aside. Also, I probably have a half dozen reviews filed on my PC which I've never completed. There's even one there from April 2001 for a guy who went by the name "Slowride" (he hasn't posted here in a year). I (like you) would rather hear that the music on a comp stunk rather than wonder if the person even received it, but at the same time, I wonder what the point is of taking the time and effort to comment on something which I didn't enjoy? I guess there's a bit of a catch 22 there.

A few times I've mentally decided not to do the comp trading thing any longer, due to the points discussed here, then someone posts something which catches my interest and I'm hooked again. I think I've basically come to the point of posting comp comments based on the following criteria:

1) I really like the majority of material
2) The music is new to me, or something that I'd not previously heard and it interests me
3) The comp maker/sender is new to the comp game, or hasn't previously had a comp of theirs reviewed

To sum it up, I think you have to try and not take it too personally, and understand that the recipients aren't snubbing you, they (we) are all just busy living our lives. :-) But at the same time you'd hope that someone out there enjoyed it enough to give a little feedback!

rick,
thanks for taking the time to write this. first, i am not looking for a pat on the back. i try to at least email the sender saying i got it and i listened to it. i post on the board from time to time to. i don't expect anyone to pick each comp apart song by song but it is fun to hear the opinions of others about what i listen to on a daily basis. if i dont enjoy it i at least try to tell the sender thanks. there have been 20 or more comps talked about on line that came after my bruford comp and similar recipients comment on those but not others. i guess i just dont know what to expect yet.
I guess my main point is that it would be nice to know that weeks of time and effort didn't go to waste. I happen to listen to all of my own comps so it is not a total waste of my time. i don't take it personally, maybe just i just expect more politeness than i should. we do have a great group of guys here and that would only make it better.
you however have always posted or mailed me about my comps and i thank you for that.

Brian

I don't sit down and make it a habit to listen to a comp all the way thru. I'll usually put it in the 200-disc changer, then forget about it. Once in a while, a Bruford song will pop up, and I'll enjoy it (unless there's singing on it- jeezus, who
i are
these people he picks to sing??)

But that's what happens when I get comps, and why I rarely review 'em.

I've sent out comps, too, and while I've gotten feedback on them, no one has taken time to pick them apart and really critique them.

That's ok with me!

What Finchy said is pretty much true. It's hard to acknowledge the comps that fall into my mailbox. I think I recvd about 6 retro comps (ranging from good to great-77 and 80 being my faves so far) this week. It's been hard to get them all into the player with any sorta method because I'm a binger. If something I really like comes along, it sees a lot of action at the loss of playtime for other stuff that comes in at he same time. Believe me though, they all get spun.

As far as the Bruford comps go, I have about 80% of those songs already, so, much of it isn't new to me. The stuff that is new is interesting, tho some of it is too trad jazz for my limited pallet. My main comment on the set is that there's just too much of it.

In the future you might think about editing your comps more so that it's not so daunting to get thru all of it. Most people don't have time to spin a 70+ minute disc in one sitting, 4 of them is out of the question! Edit edit edit. Leave 'em wanting more.

Try making a single disc Bruford comp. I bet it would be all killer, no filler.

I received your unsolictied '75 retro comp. Based on Pwrpopguys coments it should be an interesting listen. Surely on the plate for Mondays musique de jour.

Thanks,
Rick

I can see that Mr. Bruford is for a very limited audience, and multiple disks may be hard for some to handle. But maximize the return on postage is my motto. Good work, and more comps are always welcome in my mailbox.

I guess the rest just aren't as sophisticated in their musical tastes as we are (he says, with his nose up, snobishly, as he packs the kids into the car to listen to Disney tunes for two hours on his way north to a rented cottage, with an MP3 player packed with great tunes but no Bruford).

Have a great week.
I guess I am different when I recieve comps.HYFI

I can honestly say that I have listened to every comp I have asked for all the way through within days of recieving it. I try to ask only for music I think I may like instead of every comp to come along. Even though most of the music distributed here is not in my taste of listening, I have found some wonderfull music I never knew existed. I have also heard stuff that leaves me scratching my head in amazement that anyone would actually buy it. But thats not for me to decide. I obviously listen to alot of music that most here don't.
I give every comp a fair shake.

I wanted to wait until I'd heard all three before posting anything but I've been kind of stuck on the first two and haven't even heard the third one yet. I like these a lot, some of it I haven't heard in more than 20 years. There are a wide variety of styles here but you sequenced them really nicely.

As time goes by you'll notice older comps getting exposure on the Tuesday rotation threads. That's always cool. One of these days I might go on a reviewing binge for the heck of it. There's a lot on the list.
I think we're so used to getting them.3-LockBox

I myself wished I got more feedback on my own comps.

Now as far as your Bruford Comp, I thought it to be a little long. I know Bruford has had a very long career, but maybe a two-disc set would have sufficed, one would have been better. I think that way of all comps. But then again, I made a two volume set myself.

Length aside, I liked the comp, and I seem to be in the minority when it comes to the jazzier stuff, because I preferred it over the rock/vocal stuff. Not that I disliked the Yes or KC, but the instrumentals are where Bruford's talent stood out among the other instruments.

The other thing I liked about the comp is that there was a dirth of material that I don't own, and even though it was a bit over-long, it helps me make up my mind on future purchases.
