| and just in case "Slowride" (Jason?) is still around... | RPM Aug 17, 2002 6:50 AM | | Here's another from 2001: ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Slowride recently offered this comp and I jumped on it for several reasons, first; it contained several bands that have been discussed and recommended on this board (Matthew Sweet, Buffalo Tom, Dinosaur Jr., Radiohead, Ween), yet I've never been exposed to. secondly; A comp was finally offered on the board that I recognized most of the artists. Seems like most of the comps I've received are compromised of artists whom I've never heard OF let alone HEARD. This comp contained only one song that I already own, yet I was at least familiar with most of the names. The last reason is that this music is relatively new. Most of th eother comps I've recieved (and those I've been making for others) contain a good amount of older material. As far as I can tell all the stuff on theis comp is from the mid-90's onward. Tracklist (SONG/ARTIST): 1. Gee Angel - Sugar 2. I Will Survive - Cake 3. Sleep Now In The Fire - Rage Against the Machine 4. License To Confuse - Sebadoh 5. Time Capsule - Matthew Sweet 6. Late At Night - Buffalo Tom 7. Nearly Lost You - Screaming Trees 8. Ball and Chain - Social Distortion 9. Pretty Soon - Venetian Blinds 10. Getchoo - Weezer 11. Beautiful Day - U2 12. The Concept - Teenage Fanclub 13. Sick Of Myself - Matthew Sweet 14. I Was Wrong - Social Distortion 15. Stoned - Redd Kross 16. Girlfriend In a Coma - Smiths 17. Feel The Pain - Dinosaur Jr. 18. Just - Radiohead 19. Pork Roll Egg and Cheese - Ween COMMENTS: I've been finding a new ironic advantage to receiving compilations. In addition to discovering new music which I enjoy, I'm also finding stuff which I don't enjoy. This may not seem like an advantage, but there have been many artists which (based on reading a review or hearing a recommendation on) I thought I would really like. Well, there's nothing like actually hearing the music first hand to determine whether a particular artists is to your liking or not. So many of these comps have allowed me to determine that I probably shouldn't pursue an interest in a particular band. Two examples of this from this comp are Matthew Sweet and Ween. On the optimistic side, my interest in Cake and U2's latest was enhanced by hearing them on Slowrides comp. 1. N 2. Y 3. Y? 4. N? 5. N? 6. Y? 7. Y* 8. N 9. Y? 10. N 11. Y 12. N? 13. ? 14. N? 15. N 16. Y? 17. Y? 18. Y 19. N Gee Angel - Sugar Uh-oh, not starting off too well... I Will Survive - Cake I can just imagine the faces on the record company execs as Cake sits down at a 24 ft long mahogany conference table and tells them "we're thinking of doing a cover of Diana Ross' 'I Will Survive' ". I guess ya' gotta be confident to pull that one off. You'd never expect this cover to work but somehow it does. Great version! Sleep Now In The Fire - Rage Against the Machine Not the kind of music a 39 yr old guy with kids should be listening to, but I really like this band. License To Confuse - Sebadoh These guys sound a bit like Buthole Surfers Time Capsule - Matthew Sweet Wow this guys stuff must vary, the last thing I heard from him was a distorted, grunge ladden, hard rock number called "Superdeformed" off a sampler cd. I liked a that one better than this sugar sweetened-pop song. Late At Night - Buffalo Tom Great vocals and melody, poppy but in a better way than the previous track. A few months ago I didn't even know what the term Indie rock meant. Now I can identify it fairly easily. This is Indie rock yes? Nearly Lost You - Screaming Trees One of the songs I already own, but I don't mind, this siong is great! I'm cranking it right now. Ball and Chain - Social Distortion OK, I'm lowering the volume now. decent song but not for me...next... Pretty Soon - Venetian Blinds Clever lyrics, fun tune. Getchoo - Weezer Who's garage was this recorded in? Not my style. |
| (con't) | RPM Aug 17, 2002 6:52 AM | | Beautiful Day - U2 Warning...here's where the review gets a bit verbose, and I suspect at this point Norbert and his evil software will decide I've said enough and cut me off. But that's not going to stop journalistic truth from reaching the opressed music lovers of the world! (Ahem) So where was I? I heard this song on FM radio shrtly after its release The Concept - Teenage Fanclub At first listen this song didn't really do much for me but with successive listens its starting to become a potential grower. Sick Of Myself - Matthew Sweet Definite maybe. I'll need more listens. I Was Wrong - Social Distortion Same comments as Teenage Fanclub Stoned - Redd Kross Interesting, kind of a Beatles influence in the vocals with the music leaning toward alternative pop. Girlfriend In a Coma - Smiths Haven't heard Morriseys voice in a while, I always liked his style and odd lyrics. Thanks for the flashback. Feel The Pain - Dinosaur Jr. Another potential grower Just - Radiohead I've yet to hear a Radiohead tune that I don't like, yet I don't own any of their albums. I may have to remedy this. OK Computer and Kid A are the ones on my wishlist. Which album is this cut from? Pork Roll Egg and Cheese - Ween Are these the same guys responsible for the song Spiromeningitis? __________________________________________________________________________________________________ ahhhh, I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders! thanks Jason, whereever you may be!
