Buying Too Many Cds -- Oh, yeah, oh yeah......audiobill
Nov 22, 2002 6:49 PM
Well, I just returned from a visit into downtown Toronto.
What was intended as a "window" shopping/ "window" listening experience with the sole purpose of buying some hardcore-emo CD, after conversing with Rae and Masonjar, I ended up with ONE hardcore-emo disc and SIXTEEN others.

Here they are (actually most were on my all-time wishlist) and I'm quite happy:

The Sadies' new one "Stories Often Told"
Catherine Wheel's "Chrome"
Echo & the Bunnymen's "Reverberation" (My 1st Echo disc)
Jane's Addiction "Ritual De Lo Habitual" (rcd.by Slosh)
Blur's "Parklife"
Low's "Things We Lost In The Fire" (rcd.by Davey/dbi)
Ned's Atomic Dustbin "Intact - the Singles Collection"
Sonic Youth's "Murray Street" (rcd by RR Fellowship)
The Teardrop Explodes' "Kilimanjaro"
N*E*R*D's "In Search Of..."
Beautiful South's "Painting It Red"
Butthole Surfers' "Weird Revolution"
The The's "Soul Mining"
XTC's "Oranges & Lemons"
XTC's "Mummer"
XTC's "Drums & Wires" (all Japanese remasters)
and
.........drumroll.........Boy Sets Fire's "After the Eulogy"
(rc'dby Rae & Masonjar) -- what I initially went shopping for.

I've got some listening to do,
Cheers.... audiobill

I repeat, do <i>not</i> let <i>Reverberation</i> keep you from buying other Echo albums. IMO, it's easily their worst (although I haven't heard the most recent album) and it was released while Ian McCulloch wasn't in the band. I'd go next with <i>Crocodiles</i> or <i>Ocean Rain</i>.

Nice list of stuff there. Here's what I picked up last night and today:

Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man
Mastodon - Remission
Sixteen Horsepower - Folklore
The Telescopes - Third Wave
The Patsy Cline Collection (box set)
Bikini Kill - Pussywhipped
Dinosaur Jr. - Bug

say Jar was the only person at RR I would recommend Mastodon to? No one ever listens to me. I might as well be a Leonard Cohen record ;-P

Now between you and Davey I wanna hear some Sixteen Horsepower. I think I might actually have some somewhere on a pre-recorded comp.

As far as G'sZM, it looks pretty much like I can just grab whatever 'cause nobody mentioned anything to avoid.

Oh, and Bill, the only thing I have on your list is Ritual de lo Habitual and it's a great album but some of it may have to grow on you.
Why do you think I bought it based on what <i>you</i> said?Stone

I decided to take a chance on this one. I read some other things about it, including a debate on another board about which was a better album, <i>Remission</i> or Isis' <i>Oceanic</i>. The people arguing for <i>Remission</i> kept saying it rocked where Isis doesn't, which is the precise reason that Isis album hasn't been in heavy rotation around here. So I decided to see about Mastodon... So far, it seems really good (a lot of metal I don't care for strictly because of the vocals [and thus my leanings toward hardcore punk instead], but I like the singer's vocals so far). I'm not sure if it'll keep my interest or not. We'll see.

I know you recommended it only to Mr. Jar, and I won't blame you if it sucks hippo balls [at least not to your face :-)].

I'll let you know what I think of the Sixteen Horsepower album once I listen to it.

Is that the Thought for Food album? I've had that near the top of my list for awhile but last I checked it was still import only and a bit pricey. Has it been released here or did you get an import. As I recall you seem to pay decent prices on imports at your local store. Lemme know what you think of it. I might have to check around a little more. Also curious about The Telescopes new one. Do you have any old ones? The self-titled one is an old fave of mine (and Jar too :-)).

I'd be curious to know how much you like Sixteen Horsepower too. I guess you probably saw my post about it recently so you already know I love it :-)

BTW, now that you mentioned the Iron and Wine disc I've been seeing good reviews all over for it, including the new Uncut magazine. Are you gonna do a year end comp? I hope it's not just me and Sloshy. Rae will probably do one and I think you should too, and maybe you could add some extra bonus tracks on mine from Iron and Wine :-) I'll go ahead and send you a copy of my Holiday Mixer next week and then you'll have to reciprocate in kind, how's that ;-)
Don't we all?Stone

I'm not sure what to make of The Books album (yes, <i>Thought For Food</i>) yet. It's something that's normally not my thing, being electronic stuff with a lot of voice samples and such, but parts of it I really like so far. It's got some strings in it and at times the songs have actual song structure to them, which I like. Some strange stuff, though. My copy is a German import that I bought for $14. I heard somewhere it is supposed to be released domestically soon, but I don't know if it's true and I can't remember where I heard it.

I understand (although I've never heard it) that the Telescopes self-titled is shoegazer. Well, the new album is much more like <i>Neon Golden</i> than <i>Loveless</i>. It's definitely not shoegazer. It's primarily electronic, and I've only given it one spin, but so far it sounds good, but isn't outstanding to me.

Iron & Wine kicks arse. I love that album. I am planning on doing a year-end comp, although it'll probably be another month or so before I put it together. I was already thinking about putting two Iron & Wine songs on it, but I'll see what I can do about a bonus track or two for ya. Unless you wanted Mastodon instead....

Another month or so!!??- Davey -

But the year will be over by then! Amazon.com already put out their best of 2002 a couple weeks ago and everybody else will have theirs out in the next couple weeks or so. You don't want us to think you were influenced by all those indie-hipster-elitist ezines, now do you?

Hehehe, mine isn't really a best of 2002 type comp this year although many of them will be on my year end list. And the title I used (Uncle Davey's Holiday Mixer) is really kind of a joke based on the cover art since anyone looking for some holiday cheer and a good set of party tunes will likely be sorely disappointed :-)

Ol' Sloshy is gonna have to put out a bonus disc this year with all his new finds. I mean, how could he leave off the best head banging stoner metal prog album of all time? It's pretty tough to do a real best of comp and include both wimpy acoustic stuff like Nina Nastasia and bang the bass on your forehead rock like Six By Seven or GvsB (or maybe Mastodon). So I didn't :-)
I started working on a new comp last nightSlosh
Nov 25, 2002 2:46 PM
I only got up to track five so far but it's killer! No metal on this one and it's not going to be all 2002 either. You probably have every song that's going on it already and in fact one of those five songs I know you already put on one of your comps. You have to start listening to some crappy music to give everyone else a chance ;-)

I'll likely do an all heavy comp early next year.

Nice list, too, Stone.

Let us know how the boxed set of Patsy turns out -- I've eyed this one, but never pulled the trigger on it.

Thanks-a-ton, for the Echo recd's.... I think I'll try their debut, next.

<I><B>Reverberation</I></B> is a really weird E&tBm album to start with. As was said elsewhere, don't let that turn you off from them. <I><B>Crocodiles</I></B> and <I><B>Ocean Rain</I></B> are my two favourites. That comes from their "crucial" early 80's period.

<i><B>Chrome</I></B> is, of course, a classic. I _<i>love</I>_ that album.

<I><B>Parklife</I></B> -- really good album, I don't listen to it enough. I need to listen to it again when I run across it.

<I><B>Soul Mining</I></B> is another great 80's album, but check out <I><B>Infected</I></B>, if you're not already familiar with it.

I've also been a fan of Ned's Atomic Dustbin -- didn't realize they had a singles collection out. I'll have to check the tracklisting to see if I need it. I doubt it. I remember liking them more than I did when I revisited them recently. Very alternative, by the definition in the 80's.

I didn't like Low too much, but I may just not have been in the mood for it.

The rest of it I'm not too familiar with. (I know, I know, I would probably like XTC.)
XTC....audiobill
Nov 25, 2002 9:55 AM
Dusty:

You need to definitely try some XTC.

A good place to start would be Skylarking or, possibly Englisht Settlement (a darker vision). Both imho are superb.

Lmk if you ever decide to take the XTC plunge.

btw, go for the Japanese remaster versions; they're readily available and the improvements in sonics are very noticeable.

Cheers, Bill

Looks fun. Unfortunately, I'm too broke for any spending sprees right now. I did pick up the new Audioslave, which I could get away with since the wife, who looks at receipts and such, is ga ga for Chris Cornell.

Still, it does rock. I'm diggin' it.

Some fun stuff on your list. My CD of Chrome got busted a couple years back. Damn shame 'cause I always really liked it. Black Metallic and are fantastic.

I agree to pick up another Echo. Ocean Rain was always my favorite.

Anything by Jane's Addiction is good to me. My favorite's Nothing's Shocking, but Ritual's good too. I think these guys don't get enough credit for getting hard rock some attention and helping pave the way for all the grungy stuff that came soon after they hit.

Been wanting to check out that Low CD, maybe someday.

I'm curious about that N*E*R*D one. I've liked what I've heard, but haven't heard much. Let us know how it sounds.

I like Butthole Surfers, but have never heard that one. Locust Abortion Technician and Hairway to Steven are my favorites.

That's my favorite The The, although I always end up skipping the first trak, the one that a lot of people like best, but oh well.

I've never figured out why so many other people like XTC so much and I've just never gotten excited by them.

And, you know, I'm still pretty confused by the whole emo thing. I haven't the slightest idea what an emo band sounds like.

Nov 25, 2002 9:51 AM
Hey nobody,

That N*E*R*D CD is outstanding. I'm not a huge fan of hip-hop; nevertheless, I do love Tupac Shakur's work, as well as the second Eminem CD.
Indeed, it was one of my students, who knows the kind of music I enjoy, who first suggested I give this a try.

I like it a whole lot!! It's what I'd call highly creative hip-hop with excellent musicianship. Furhtermore, the CD is of a consistent quality, with more r&b overtones in the last quarter.
Production value is excellent, as is the lyricism.

I highly recommend this disc, especially to those who'd like to try a little hip-hop.

Hope this helps,

Nice list Bill, Love that Low album, and "Kilimanjaro" is an old favorite". You'll be a busy littel beaver for the next little while.

Wondering how you came to buy "Reverberation" as your intro to Bunnymen. It seems like a curious choice...it's the only album without Ian McCulloch as frontman, so at least in that way, its not representative of thier work. It's not very highly regarded, (I don't have it, never heard it, so I can't comment on it directly), compared to their other more lauded albums. I'd recommend Crocodiles as the Bunnymen album to get first, and Ocean Rain as the one to get if you're only getting one. Honourable mention for Heaven Up Here, Porcupine and self-titled as very good albums too.

Okay, the recd's are in......... and the next Echo CD I purchase will be Ocean Rain.

I do like the "Reverberation" disc -- very psychedellic and deliciously weird. Oh well,..... I guess I'm in the minority here.

Thanks-a-ton, Mark, et al for the recd's. I find that I'll have to give you further details on the rest of the CD haul, when I have a few spare minutes.

Cheers,

I have a fireind who hs it and loves it...He's a big Bunnyment fan. And AMG gives it a suprisingly good review (though only 3-stars), It's just NOT a Bunnymen album, according to them.

...I probably would be overstating it if I said, "it's their worst disc", but yeah, if that's as low as they go, you really can't go wrong. I vaguely remember liking it. But believe it or not, they can do even better.
