Anybody heard the UNCUT sampler "Instant Karma"?Audio Girl
Nov 23, 2002 6:02 PM
It was UNCUT's November 2002 sampler and a tribute to John Lennon. I'm about halfway through it and it is amazingly good. Features performances by Paul Weller, Ian McCulloch, Kristin Hersh, The Pretenders (a heck of a performance of "Bless You"), The Breeders, Mercury Rev, Spooky Tooth, Generation X, Ash, John Holt, among others.

Question: in the original version of "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me & My Monkey", did he really use the "f" word? I just don't remember it -- not that it would surprise me -- and my original copy is on vinyl.

Hope everyone is enjoying the pre-Thanksgiving weekend. If you'd like a sample of the sampler, let me know.

P.S. Welcome back, CZ!!!!!!
I've got it, but I don't quite get the question- Davey -

Well, I do understand the question and the answer is no "f" word in the version on the White Album, but the Kristin Hersh version sounds identical to me in the lyrics. Where do you hear the "f" word? Are we talking about the same "f" word? The one with a "u" and a "c" and a "k" after the "f"? Just so we're on the same page, ya know ;-)

It is kind of a cool sampler but I wasn't quite as impressed as you, I guess. Of course, some of the covers are pretty old and I've heard them before, and then some of them were a little too faithful to the original. I did really like Ian McCulloch's Jealous Guy though. Not exactly vintage Echo & The Bunnymen treatment, but still pretty cool and a bit different than the original. Remember Bryan Ferry's version? That was a great one. And the Breeders cover of Happiness Is A Warm Gun is one of the best Beatles covers ever in my book, but it's kinda old. I do really like what Roddy Frame, the guy from maffy's fave Aztec Camera, does with In My Life. He doesn't stray from the original but it's still very nice :-)

Details, details. hehehe. The actual song was "Working Class Hero". Now, did he say the "f" word in that song? And, yes, sweet Davey, it is the f word followed by u, then c, then k.

It is a really sweet sampler. You and I should do a Siskel and Ebert kind of thing on music. You are much more cutting edge than I, since I had never heard a reggae interpretation to "Happy Christmas (War is Over)" and "Give Peace A Chance". Nor had I heard any of the other Lennon covers that you mentioned that are so main stream. Course I am stuck here in Texas where they only let us hear a segment of what is released to the general population. ;-)

Are you game? We could call it "Davey & Mary", and I am sure snowbunny would be there cheering you on for success. :-)

Hey, nice to see you stopping by more often, even if it is with some bad news. Good luck and all that. Hope you have a nice holiday.

Working Class Hero is a different song. That's not the one you asked about! Hehehe, yeah the original is the same way :-) I have the Broken English album that cover is from and it's a very nice album. All I said is that some of the covers were old and I had heard them before. Not ALL of them and the ones I mentioned were all new to me! And I never said anything about mainstream either! Sheesh! :-)

I think the only ones I had heard before were Generation X, The Breeders, Ike & Tina Turner and the Marianne Faithfull one I just mentioned. And maybe the Spooky Tooth one, but not sure on that. Sounds familiar but some other bands have covered it similarly too.

Overall, I'll give the sampler 3.5 stars out of 5 (could've been 4 stars if they had cut the Pretenders song ;-))

Heck, that’s one of my favorite tracks on the entire sampler. It wasn’t familiar to me… The Pretenders never sparked enough interest for me to pony up and purchase an entire CD or LP. I hadn’t even heard Ike and Tina’s version of Come Together; or if I had, I certainly dismissed it (and shouldn’t have).

Anyway, I still would be interested if other RRers have heard the sampler. Hamell on Trial’s version of “John Lennon” was an interesting twist to open the comp, with Roddy Frame’s take on “In My Life” providing a nice, smooth finish. Overall, a fine production honoring the anniversary of John’s death which is right around the corner. In true S&E fashion, I’ll have to give this one Two Thumbs Up.

Thank you for your kind words of support. As far as bad news, the whole job saga is turning into a blessing. A senior executive in another division of our corporation heard about what was potentially going to transpire for me, and is attempting to create a sales position for me. I may even get a raise out of the whole deal, and the product I will be representing is one that will be much more interesting to promote (and worthwhile to the patient population which it serves). So as many RRers reflected in the post below, when God closes a door, He always opens a window.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and all RRers!

I just love her version of WCH on Broken English, I actually heard her version before I heard Lennon's. But Mary, If you are inspired to search out MFs Broken English, don't be playing "Why'd Ya Do What Ya Did" with any impressionable youngsters within ear shot ;-). Makes Alanis Morrissette sound like Debbie Gibson, pretty racy stuff for 1978.

Sounds like a cool sampler...who's version of "Eveybody's Got Something to Hide..." is there? The Feelies?

I have an excellent version of that song by guitarist Tomoyasi Hotei. It's from a CD called Merry Axemas. Excellent Christmas CD for guitar enthusiasts.

...did a live version of "Jealous Guy" that I thought was just transcendent (from The High Road), I presume that's what you mean by Bryan Ferry's version (or has he released his own version somewhere that I missed?).

...I also really enjoyed that version of "My Only Love"...damn, I got to find a good (live) recording of that. According to AMG, looks like I should be looking for Heart Still Beating...?

Yeah, they recorded the studio version as a tribute a few months or maybe a year after Lennon was shot and it became a big hit. According to AMG it was their only #1 in Britain. I have it on the "Street Life 20 * Greatest Hits" 2-LP collection from 1986 but it's probably on all the greatest hits packages. I haven't heard the live version but that sounds like it must be a good one.

I'd be interested in seeing a tracklist. Of course I could always just get the magazine but I just have very little interest in reading about music. I just want to listen.

Does anyone cover "Mother"? That's my favorite Lennon song but it's hard to imagine (no pun intended) anyone else doing it as well. To me that song is a fine example of pure emotion taking a simple song and elevating to true art.
