Need some good heavy hard rock recommendations...igor
Nov 25, 2002 1:51 PM
What are some of the good (new) heavy/hard rock cds out there today? Bands I liked in the past, have been Deftones, Live, Korn (to some extent), 40BelowSummer, others. What is out there that is good? I've seen a clip or two of Chevelle, Trust Co. System of a Down, are they good? WHat else is a must have for this genre. I like the musicality of Live, the feeling of Deftones, heavy guitar of Guns &Roses, the metallic edge of Metallica. I also love other genres too, and have been discovery more and more jazz, and lately bluegrass/acoustic. So my tastes very widely. And soon I will need a top 20 of "must have" classical recordings. But for now, let's do heavy. THANKS

I suggest you check out System of a Down's Toxicity and Queens of the Stone Age's Songs for the Deaf. Right up your alley and generally quite well-liked by the folks whose tastes run in that direction.

I'd love to give better descriptions, but I'm short on time. Check descriptions on Amazon.com to get a better feel for what these albums are like, but I give them both the thumbs up.

Thanks, I'll give them consideration. Let me know what else you would recommend when you get a chance.

Mastodon - Remission...makes Metallica sound like twee. You want heavy, this is it

Girls Against Boys - You Can't Fight What You Can't See...somewhere in between, I don't know, say Deftones and U2, only better than that description

Song Of Zarathustra - A View From High Tides...more like heavy hardcore than straight metal. If you can take Deftones' vocals, you'll be fine with this

Audioslave - s/t...sounds more like the follow-up to Soundgarden's Down On The Upside than RATM w/Cornell. Nothing innovative here but solid none-the-less

These are all 2002 releases. I'll let Jar and others make some more recs.

NP: MidFi's Besides comp. Some people have it, some people don't. Chris, you definitely have it :-)

BTW Davey, if you happen upon this I got your package today. Thanks!

Can't believe you got the package on Monday. I only mailed it Saturday morning. Not bad for a US buck :-)

This is a great cd.

Also real heavy is Deep Purple - Machine Head (although very old, but it is killer)

And maybe Judas Priest - Stained Class - although not "heavy" but very hard.

Oh, Queensryche has been one of my favorite groups for years. I saw them on tour for Empire, and one of the best shows I've seen. I saw them at the Broome County arena (upstate NY) which is generally a terrible place to hear a concert, but they sounded terrific. And the show was a blast as well. How is the newest Queensryche album? Haven't heard their newest stuff...

Hi Slosh :-)

Just kidding. That is some really heavy stuff (and Slosh does know his metal). If you want heavy, and more intricate, but less rocking, check out Isis - Oceanic. Although I must admit, it just doesn't rock as much as I'd like.

I'll also second Toxicity. This area is really not usually my style (especially the stuff that hits the mainstream), but that is a damn good album.

Toxicity sounds like one I will get. I'm not sure about Mastodon. I like heavy, but if all it is is "screaming" than that is not for me. At least Metallica could kinda sing. I liked 40Below Summer, but the vocals could've had a bit less screaming, and more singing -- the guy has a great voice, he just needs to use it more. I'll have to listen to Isis, and see what that sounds like. Thanks.
Holy crap- 40 Below Summer?? I thought I was the only one...Finch Platte

Those guys
i RAWK!
I love 'em! Cool website, too.

That's funny- just this a.m., I started to post about a heavy comp I was thinking of making. It's a big deal for me, cuz I don't have a burner- I have to go to a friend's house. Whole bunch of logistics involved. Anyone got MiniDisc? ;0)

Anyhoo- sounds like you and I have the same tastes. Here's some more stuff you might like:

Clutch
Kittie
The Living End
Porcupine Tree
The Blank Theory
Papa Roach
Staind
Soak
Big Wreck
Slider
Infectious Grooves
Default
Darlahood
My Vitriol
Face To Face
Crushed
Nothingface
Handsome
A Perfect Circle
Snot
Rammstein
Injected
Boiler Room
Switched
Stonesour
Cold
30 Seconds To Mars
Hedder
Big Hate
Godsmack
Simon Says
Systematic
OTEP

Maybe I
i will
do that comp- sounds like there might be some interest.

That is a hell of a list you sent me. Some of those bands I own, like Godsmack, Staind, and I've heard of a few, but much of these are new to me. THANKS! A Perfect Circle and Simon Says were ones I've been meaning to check out. I've seen on this board Porcupine Tree mentioned -- how would you describe them?

As for 40Below, I heard their one "single" on the radio (or was it MTV2) and liked it enough to buy the album. At first I hated the album, too much screaming, but then all of a sudden it just appealed to me. (Same was true with Pearl Jams 10 -- still one of my favorite albums) I still wish he would sing a little more than scream, but to each his own. It does rock though. I read somewhere that the singer actually started on Broadway when he was like 10 or something. You know he has a good set of pipes on him.

My biggest problem is not having enough time anymore to find new bands to listen to. ANd I like too many genres now. I've branched out to jazz and blues, a lot more female vocalists, but deep inside, the need to rock is always there, and I'm getting old! I'm trying to convince my wife to go with me for my birthday to see Korn, but I don't think she's up for it. May have to go alone :(

If you make the compilation, let me know. I'd love to get a copy of it. irg2@cornell.edu Thanks!

...Symbol of Life. That's just the most recent pleasurable purchase of mine that might qualify for your criteria.

You like female vocals? The Gathering, Lacuna Coil, Tapping the Vein, Tristania, Theatre of Tragedy, Flowing Tears, Sirenia (sort of)...

I am hesitant to give you any of my other suggestions, as my tastes tend to run (in contrast to yours) (a) harder, (b) noisier, and either (c) less polished, production-wise (more "indie" sounding), or (d) overly produced.

But I think if you give me (us) a better idea as to your tastes, then I (we) might be able to help you out.

OMG, this is such an intense track, haven't heard anything like this since Lard.)

I am surpised these guys have not made it on anyones list.

I highly recommend the new Album Believe and their first is very good too, although the lead singer makes a rather unusual grunting noise on quite a few tracks that gets old pretty quickly. They do a great cover of Tears for Fears "Shout" - talk about making a so so song kick ass!

I have seen them a few times and they put on a very good show. To give you an idea of their popularity, at the 2001 Ozzfest, they were supposed to play the second stage - designed for crowds of a 1000 or less - 5,000 people showed up. They got moved to the main stage the next date.

Forgot to mention this. The last Queensryche Album - Q2K I think - pretty damned good. On par with the last few albums but not up to the standard of Empire or Operation Mind Crime.

Geoff Tate's solo cd SUCKS! I was very disappointed. Just nothing very good on it at all.

Also, if you like Alice in Chains, check out Jerry Cantrell's solo work. It is heavy but still very melodic and his singing is top notch.

I didn't know Geoff Tate had a solo album. Love his voice, but I'm not surprised his solo effort wasn't good. I had the Jerry Cantrell album, but I thought it sucked. I just couldn't get into it. It seemed lost, like these were potential songs for Alice that never made the cut. I do like his voice, and his guitar sound. I'd like to see him with another polished band.

As for Operation Mindcrime and Empire, these were great albums, very unique for the genre. Kind of a heavy metal Pink Floyd's the Wall. I heard that Operation was supposed to be turned into a movie, that ever happen?

I got some great recommendations here. I think System of Down will be an imminent purchase. I did get the new Chevelle album over the weekend. Target is always playing their video, and the cd was only $8.99. Oh, and it is pretty good too. There are some real catchy tunes. Sort of in the vein of Tool, Staind, 40Below Summer, Deftones, but yet I'm not sure any of these are fair to compare. It is nothing too original, but it is very solid, good vocals that can truly sing, and scream, and good overall musicianship. Also impressive in that is only a 3 piece band. If no one has heard it, definitely worth $9 at Target.

I feel like I need to buy about 50 cds to catch up! So much to buy, so much to listen to, and yet so little time and money. Oh well, anyone want to send me a good compilation, I'd be happy to listen :) Might even send you a donoation.
