| Help! I actually like a female singer | unleasHell Nov 26, 2002 11:48 AM | | Sade, man her sexy voice just goes right thru me. I like the jazzy music too. I have her first 4 CD's...
You could count the female artists I like on one hand and have a bunch of fingers left over, but
She is awesome...
anyone like her? thoughts? whatever?????? |
| re: Help! I actually like a female singer | mawako Nov 26, 2002 12:00 PM | | Yeah, she's pretty cool. First picked-up on her when Smooth Operator was released.
Regards...Mawako |
| Agreed | DLD Nov 26, 2002 1:10 PM | | Give Norah Jones a try as well. Similar qualities IMHO. And even better looking. She was on Leno again the other night. Seemed a little nervous but did a more than credible job of nailing her vocals on Come Away With Me. After Jay and Tom Ridge (Guest) shook hands with her as the end credits were rolling, you could see her jump with glee as they turned their backs on her to wave good night to the crowd. A real, all too rare, show of honest emotion by a budding superstar. |
| Take 2 Valium and a few beers, you'll be ok tomorrow | Dave_G Nov 26, 2002 1:38 PM | | Huh?
Chick band?
Next thing we know you will post about horn bands.

| re: Help! I actually like a female singer | HYFI Nov 26, 2002 6:37 PM | | I like Sade. Good for the romantic mood. Her cd's sound good and she always has a great band. I have a video of her 1 hour In The Spotlight from a few years back. Mike just sent me some remastered stuff that is excellent. She didn't make it on my Girls Night Out because I just forgot I had it. |
| If you're only going to like one chick singer... | DustyChalk Nov 26, 2002 10:50 PM | | ...why that one? I mean, I like her, but I (can) like anything. In your case, it just doesn't jive. I don't understand you at all. If you were to like any chick singer, I would have expected you to like the lead singer of Placebo first. Or Sigur Rós. (JK) There's nothing wrong with liking chick singers. There is something wrong with assuming you won't like something just because it has a chick singer in it, without having heard it. In other words -- the problem with bigotry is not making the generalization in the first place, the problem is extrapolating that stereotype back onto an individual. Not ragging on you. I understand having better things to listen to. I will be the last person to urge someone to listen to something new. I will give people crap about what they will listen to, but that is not at all the same thing. That's just giving crap. But if someone expresses an interest in hearing something new, I can usually come up with something. Whatever you do, don't listen to Alison Moyet, "This House". Now that lady has soul. And definitely, DEFINITELY, do not look up Shirley Bassey or ... who was that lady that did all those collaborations with Ray Charles...? Oh, yeah, that's right, Betty Carter. Stay far FAR away from these. It just seems like there is (was? hopefully) something more to it than that (not wanting to waste time with an entire genre of music) with you. Like there was a reason you didn't like chick singers or horns. |
| Questuion for DustyChalk..... | mawako Nov 27, 2002 8:47 AM | | Hi Dusty..
I haven't engaged in any "personal" dialogue with anyone here for the year or so that I have been around. Once in a while I make a comment or post a thread, but usually I just read. But, I have to ask you....how do you jump from not liking female singers to,
"There's nothing wrong with liking chick singers. There is something wrong with assuming you won't like something just because it has a chick singer in it, without having heard it.
In other words -- the problem with bigotry is not making the generalization in the first place, the problem is extrapolating that stereotype back onto an individual."
To me, your comment indicates that you are guilty of the very thing you are attributing to "unleash". You are even telling him what female singer to like.
I can't stand hiphop or rap music...won't even allow it in my house...Am I also a bigot?
I will be very interested in what you have to say.
Regards...Mawako
BTW, I am not trying to get into a debate or semantical contest with you....just wondering where you are coming from.
Regards, again, Mawako |
| right................ | unleasHell Nov 27, 2002 10:43 AM | | I thought using the word bigotry was a bit far fetched, perhaps he just picked the wrong word.
In the real world I like all chicks, err women and have "dated" women of every color.
I think it is just a matter of taste, as you say, if you don't like Rap, it doesn't mean you have anything against those who sing?/make it, it is just your preference.
I really think Dusty has probably the most-openminded views of music on this board, which can be good or bad as I have seen people discredit his reviews by saying things like "Yeah, but you like everything".
But I have never seen him really go after anyone or start arguments (like me) so I am cool with whatever he says and usally do find it help and/or enlightening. |
| dood, have u ever dated a green chick? | RPM Nov 27, 2002 12:41 PM | | They're the best! ;-) |
| dood, have u ever dated a green chick? | mawako Nov 27, 2002 12:53 PM | | The only human that dated that one was Kirk.
Mawako |
| Just for the record... | DustyChalk Nov 27, 2002 6:36 PM | | ...you hit it pretty much right on the mark with the first sentence. "Bigotry" was probably the wrong word to use. Not sure how you got in a response before me, though, I didn't see it when I posted earlier today. |
| Answer from DustyChalk of sorts | DustyChalk Nov 27, 2002 11:09 AM | | Well, I have to admit, my response wasn't all that well composed. What I was trying to say is that there is nothing wrong with saying something like, "I don't usually like chick singers", in other words, allowing for the exception. Yes, I think it is bigoted to be completely turned off by an entire category of music. When you are only applying it to yourself, I think the only person you are damaging is yourself. And, again, don't get me wrong. I understand not wasting time investigating a category of music. There's plenty of good music out there. You're bound to miss some. Better to miss some in a category in which you are likely to be wasting your time, right? I will be the first person to defend someone's ability to ignore an entire category of music. But if you start doing something that prevents other people from enjoying their particular flavour of music -- not allowing it in your house does count, yes, unless everyone else in your house feels the same way -- then I think you've crossed the line from what I call "personal" bigotry to "social" bigotry. And yes, I think that's bad. Sorry if the truth hurts. Ragging on someone every time they bring something up would count as that, also. I try not to do that, but have been guilty of it in the past (my ex-wife likes country music). Joking about it, if the audience can take a joke, does not count. It's a very fine line, and some people tread it carefully. I was definitely not trying to tell him what female singer to like, I was just surprised by his particular choice. I know his tastes a little bit, and if I had had to guess, that would not have been my guess. But I've been wrong before, so I think that says more about my ability to guess, than it does anything about him. I'm not sure I understand how I was guilty of the same thing, please explain further. It is not self-explanatory. The thing I was trying to say when I used the word "bigotry" (which is not the same as being a bigot -- you made that leap yourself) is that saying something like "I don't like most green-blooded people (for whatever reason)" is not the same as saying "I won't like Fereznik, because he is green-blooded". Who knows? Fereznik might be the first green-blooded person I like. Saying "I don't like all green-blooded people" counts out all possibilities of future green-blooded people, in the same way. I'm sorry that "bigot" triggered a red flag with you. I was not calling unleasHell a bigot (nor would I say that you are a bigot), I was saying that his actions on this particular matter seemed ... prejudiced ...? Not sure that I can come up with a better word that doesn't sound harsh. And I hope that unleasHell realizes that I wasn't attacking him. If it came across that way, I apologize. I was just giving him crap. When one develops a reputation for not liking something, one should expect a certain amount of crap for it, and develop a sense of humour about it. I think he does/did. Otherwise, why would he be making the post in the first place? It kind of makes fun of himself, don't you think? (uH -- if you're reading this, sorry for talking to you in the third person, but I couldn't figure out how to write this without changing that.) BTW, Mawako, I really admire your ability to lurk and only post about music. That is something I could learn. I do have a tendency to think of this board as a community, and get carried away and take some things that are said seriously. I should probably have my head examined. PS I appreciate you keeping this at the "discussion" level, and not a debate or semantical contest. I do have a tendency to get pedantic. |
| Answer from DustyChalk of sorts | mawako Nov 27, 2002 1:33 PM | | Hey Dusty, thanks for your thoughtful reply.
I'm not familiar with unleash, but I what I understood of his post was that he generally does not like female singers. I did not take what he posted to mean that he did not like all female singers. To me that was obviated by his disclosure that he liked Sade. What do you think?
I had this looong response, but I just deleted it. Don't want to play in your ballpark....could wind-up being a double-headder.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
Regards...Mawako |
| Answer from unleasHell of sorts | unleasHell Nov 27, 2002 4:12 PM | | yeah, I get in a mood wher I just blurt out something, I am not going for shock-value as much as I am just stating how I feel and let anyone who wants to, take it from there, including telling me I'm wrong..
Believe me Mawako, I can take it and I like where you were going with your takes. This board needs more controversy and less back-patting...
Happy turkey-day, remeber the Pilgrims and Indians gave their lives so that you could live free and eat turkey...
BTW: to anyone interested, I just became a Moderator on a Basketball board, any NBA fans interested out there, stop by and say hi, realgm.com, I use the same name as here... peace out |
| What if they wanted us to eat chicken? | DarrenH Nov 27, 2002 5:39 PM | | I mean, where is it said we have to eat turkey? Dag nabbit, if that's not controversy, I don't what is.
Happy chicken-day |
| What do I think? | DustyChalk Nov 27, 2002 6:36 PM | | I think what he meant should best be left for him to discuss. Not sure what you meant by a double-header, I don't follow baseball. Feel free to bring it up again later, I sort by "latest response". Have a happy turkey day, y'all. |
