I wasn't exactly inundated with noms so some people got more than their fair share of tracks. I think that the more tunes you've got to choose from the easier it would be to find a thread to hang the whole selection together. So pile them in for JC's CRS v6.
I suppose it's an Indie hipster elitist compilation that you'll either love or hate depending on your IHE rating. My favourites in no particular order...
Clinic. Got their latest album on the strength of this and it's good, must get their first which is supposed to be better. I'd actually written these guys off because they used to perform live in full surgical gowns c/w masks and fake bloodstains, which seemed as stupid an idea as I'd heard in a long time and still does actually.
Papa M and Songs: Ohia. Don't really know why I love music like this as much as I do and I can imagine it driving other board members absolutely nuts but that's just on account of their low IHE ratings. If I did the comp again I'd do the Over Jordan track even quieter to make you kind of lean in and concentrate more ;-)
Vanderslice. Kewl and "as above". Rae also included a track from Cornelius that prompted me to go and get the album but I couldn't for the life of me get it to fit into the mix until two days after mailing them all out.
Wire. A godsend from maf that arrived at the last minute. Was a pretty quiet deal up to then.
Chuck Prophet. Just an excellent album.
Enon. I will get me some of this.
Sundry explanations...
The Blackalicious track isn't representative of the album and was included to broaden the stylistic range of the comp. Every critic known to man says it's a good album but it didn't blow me away and no other track came even close to fitting.
RPM I finally got my copy of Gomez's - In Our Gun last weekend. About three weeks too late. Sorry.
I enjoyed doing it and I encourage anybody who's thinking of having a go to jump at it.
Regards, Chris. |
| RIAA ALERT!! | allears Nov 26, 2002 8:45 PM | | I have purchased 5 discs so far because of this comp. These bands are simply not represented anywhere around here, so thanks to all the contributors and especially you, Chris.

| OH MY GOD NOOOooooo.... | chrisnz Nov 27, 2002 12:30 AM | | Just about gave me a heart attack with that heading :-)
Five must be some kind of record, congrats.
Thanks, Chris. |
| Smooth Operator!! | audiobill Nov 27, 2002 5:26 AM | | Superb work, Chris.
I just received mine the other day & I'm very impressed with the way you managed the transitions and sequencing of the songs.
Certainly, a comp the will get more spins as the R & R season of Christmas unfolds.
Thanks again,

| Many thanks Chris. | DarrenH Nov 27, 2002 7:09 AM | | For your effort. Well done! And thanks to Slosh for ultimately mailing this to me. Every involved is to be congratulated. I have enjoyed listening to this comp and a few tracks really stand out. I enjoyed the Chuck Prophet and Clinic tracks. The Charlatan track was killer as well as the Wire tracks. I liked the Josh Rouse and John Vanderslice tracks as well.
Allears, I will be working on your package tonight. Probably get everything out on Monday. No rush on your end. I realize the circumstances.

| Thanks Darren | allears Nov 27, 2002 2:27 PM | | I won't get to yours till next week but it will be worth the wait :)

| Thanks Chrisnz | Jim Clark Nov 27, 2002 10:16 AM | | I knew this wasn't your fault : )
Actually, I agree with your assesment of the disc completely. Since I didn't contribute this time around, I'll just leave it at that. Maybe this is one of those that will grow on me if I listen enough times. Who knows.
At any rate I appreciate your efforts and am glad to have the chance to listen to this music.
Regards,

| re: CRS v5 song nominators and some favourites. | RPM Nov 27, 2002 10:59 AM | | Hey Chris,
Thanks for posting the comp info. Overall, this version wasn't my particular style (FYI, I score a very low rating on the IHE scale ;-)). For the most part the first half was a bit too down-beat, brooding & lacking in rhythm for me. There were a few notable bright spots though like Wire and The Charlatans.
I like most everything from track 12 on however, after the tempo picks up. :-) Good job, on the sequencing too.
Analogous to that old saying "a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work"....being exposed to good new music has certain rewards even if it doesn't end up being a personal favorite. :-)

Many thanks again for putting this together. And thanks to Slosh for mailing it. Slosh, I also been meaning to thank you for your year end comp.
I like this one a lot and have been playing it constantly. Just a good bunch of songs by artists I was totally unfamiliar with. Charlatans - they rock, Papa M (Over Jordan), Wire (I Don't Understand) would be my favorites.
Happy Thanksgiving |
