Johnny Cash on Larry King, last nightaudiobill
Nov 27, 2002 8:32 AM
Last night, Johnny Cash was the guest on Larry King Live.

He revealed sides of himself I never knew about. For instance, he spoke about how he grappled with his drug addiciton, several times, throughout the sixties and how he began his famous concerts for the prisoners. Furthermore, he spoke about his inner music and how he always has a tune in his head.
His dreams of Queen Elizabeth were revealing and funny, as were his reasons for wearing black and his love affair with shopping malls.

It amazed me how much of a physical toll his "nerve-ending" disease (don't remember the name) has had on him and his vision. His mind, however, is sharp and quick-witted and his outlook on life is positively sunny -- a role-model for us all.

Can you tell, yet, that I'm an adoring fan??

Anyone else on RR see this??

Mrs. Nasty called me in from my listening room about 11:15cst , caught bits and pieces . Whatta guy! I get depressed when I have a bad case of tennis elbow and he maintains a great outlook with his ailments? Super.

Sorry I missed that- JC is a national treasure. Glad he is still somewhat in the public eye; hadn't heard anything lately about his health, which has been dicey for years.
He is a Piece of History in the DeltaMasterCylinder

Just a good old boy from Arkansas -- one of the lucky few that was a main component of the early days at the SUN studios in Memphis.
I'm sure you know the other components and the rest of that story.................
Johnny must have mellowed a little....mawako

this is not a knock, but the last thing I remember about him...at one of the Grammy awards he was the presenter for the best Country and Western song.
When it turned-out to be "Country Roads" (John Denver), JC publically and shamefully dissed the song AND Denver big time. I never quite understood that. Too bad I missed the show.

He may have dissed John Denver because he deserved it...Swish

but I could be wrong :-). Maybe he chose a bad time to do it, but actually, I never think of John Denver when I think of "good" country artists. In fact, I never thought of him much at all. Johnny Cash has been been an influential artist for many years, but I seriously doubt anyone counts John Denver as an influence in any type of music. If you like him, I'm sorry, but that's my opinion. JC has bashed many of the "new country" people (Shania Twain and her ilk), and I have no problem with that. Their music caters to the masses with catchy hooks, weak lyrics and not much in the way of musical integrity or complexity. It's no different with a lot of the pop and rock music that makes up the "top 40". The people on this board bash most of the pop garbage that's so popular today (Brittany Sprears and her ilk), and I don't see the difference.
I never really thought of John Denver as CountryForeverAutumn

I do like John Denver (oh, stop your groaning!). I've always thought of him as more of a folk singer than a country singer. He seems to be able to fit into both genres, but I've always found his style and his lyrics to lean more to the folkie side. I have never considered Country Roads to be one of his finer moments.

I have great memories of taking my mother to see John Denver in concert. I took her to see him one year as a Mother's Day gift and I couldn't believe how great his voice was live. His CDs do not do him justice (Elton John has a voice like this too. Much better live). We both enjoyed ourselves so much that we repeated the outing the next time he was in town. We were sad, when he died, that this new tradition of ours had ended.
That's why the Grammys Allways have been a jokeBryanE

Just who in the hell does JC (that's Johnny Cash, not Jesus Christ) think he is by bashing another artist???

I'm not particularly found of Denver...don't even own a single record of his, but I certainly respect his work as an artist.

Like most of the folks on this board, I don't give any substance to the Grammy awards...I think it's all BS and record industry hype. I just happened to catch that show by accident.

But, to respond, the award (?) was for the best c&w SONG, not the best c&w ARTIST.

In what category would you place "Take Me Home Country Roads"?
Maybe they should rename that segment of the show the Johnny Cash Awards.

I really don't have any warm and fuzzy feelings for anyone whose head gets so big with fame, or, self importance, that they think they are the judge and jury on what's good and what's not for the rest of us peons.

All I know is that I sing Country Roads to my self more than any of JC's songs.

Hey...Happy Thanksgiving to all

I am a fan of 'Country Roads.' I played it in a band for years...well, a version that was very Motorhead-like, anyway. Now, I don't quite like the idea of Johnny Cash bashing JD, whose other work I'm mostly indifferent about. But I can see a country music purist taking issue with the inclusion of a performer who could conceivably be viewed as more folk than country being given that much creedence. Is it nice? No, of course not. But who is Johnny Cash to make such a pronouncement? Since he married into the Carter Family, who by all accounts co-founded what we now know as 'country music' along with Jimmie Rodgers, I'd say that there are worse ideas than deferring to him on what's country & what's not. I would be interested in knowing one thing, though--was John Denver ever on the Grand Ole Opry?
What world do you live in?BryanE

A world where only positve comments are allowed???
That bad boy Johnny. He's a naughty man.

Do you know JC enough to say his head is "big with fame or,self importance".That was really a dumbshit thing to say.
I have to work hard at being dumb.I see it comes quite naturally for yourself.

I betcha can really clear a room when you launch into country roads!!!! BAHAHAAHHAHAH

I was scanning the board and noticed your post.
Well, I'll tell you...based on your comments, I don't think you have to work very hard at all at being dumb. As a matter of fact, you seem to be dumb enough for everyone on this board. So, the rest of can offer our relatively benign posts and opinions and leave all the asshole remarks and personal attacks to you.
BTW ignorance like yours amuses me. Won't waste anymore time on you.

I dont know why he'd put down that song, I'm not a huge JD fan or anything, but "Take Me Home Country Roads" was my favorite song when I was a kid and it still touches me now whenever I hear it- how can anyone NOT like that song??

As for JC- he used to have a tv show about a little over 30 years ago, I cant quite remember it (my older brothers do) but Ive seen some vhs tapes of it available on Ebay- alot of great musical guests he had on his show, I'm interested to see some of these tapes.
