Read on, classical music lovers, but all invited!!!jsujo1

I have been purchasing some Reference Recordings classical releases by Eiji Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra.

The recordings are stellar and the playing also,,,,BUT!! here is my beef....I have previously been listening to a lot of the old RCA and Mercury re-issue CD's. and one expensive XRCD of Pictures by Mussorgsky.

So I have been comparing and the analogy I can think of is as if the Minesota orchestra recorded it on a sunny day, while the Mercury guys did it on a cloudy day.
Now, I love bright clean sound, but that piece has a somber connotation to me, which is better presented by the Reiner RCA one from the 1950's. As if the orchestra age average was higher, and there was an understated gloom....the new one is just like too bubbly,,,Has anyone ever noticed this with the new reocrdings compared to old re-issues?

I just also purchased a Telarc classical, latest DSD technology and a re-issue of Stravinsky's Firebird,,,well, I love the old one,,,the new stuff is just a bit too clinical and happy...weird ey??

Mussorgsky's Pictures... is quickly becoming my most listened to, if not favourite, classical piece of all time. _And_ I have that RR recording of it...somewhere...so I'll have to listen to it, and see how it fares against my reference recording (I have a "perfect" version in my head).

I have this theory with classical music: the earliest good version we hear of a piece becomes our favourite. I suspect something like this is happening with you.

When I heard the version on DAD by Classic Records (too lazy to look it up right now), I was rather disappointed with the speed with which it was played, but I have since gotten used to it. But I still find it slow.
Ignore this one.DustyChalk

You may be right about getting used to it...But the Mercury Living Presence CD that Janis did in Piano and then the Ravel version also has the same characteristic..a more matte finish to the music instead of shiny...

There is an objective difference maybe in how the music is being interpreted as times and sensibilities change ( of the musicians i mean).
