I need more 2002 releases that rawk...Stone
Dec 1, 2002 4:31 PM
I've been working on my top 10 list for this year, and the beginnings of a year end compilation, and I've noticed a lack (or at least a perceived lack) of 2002 releases that rock. I do have a few that rock, but I want more. Recommendations please. I'm really not all that interested in metal (I think I've got my quota with two metal albums this year), but if you think it's great, let me know.

I'm mostly looking in the directions of Minneapolis, Cleveland, and Bethlehem, but all recs are welcome. :-)

Albums that truly rawk:
Mastodon - <i>Remission</i> (you knew I would put this first :-))
GVSB - <i>You Can't Fight What You Can't See</i>
Oxes - <i>Oxxxes</i>
The Fvcking Champs - <i>V</i> (I don't have it but I'm pretty sure it's from this year)

Albums that mostly rawk:
Cave In - <i>Tides Of Tomorrow</i>
Audioslave - s/t (not your thing)
QOTSA - <i>Songs For The Deaf</i> (not that I'd recommend it)

Albums that rawk at times:
Enon - <i>High Society</i>
Jucifer - <i>I Name You Destroyer</i>
Signal To Trust - <i>Folklore</i>
Trail Of The Dead - <i>Source Tags & Codes</i>

See, ya didn't miss much ;-)
Not quite.Stone

That GvsB album is probably a good choice. I'll have to look for that one.

Oh, and I like that QOTSA record. It won't be in my top 10 of the year or anything, but I think it's good.

Thanks for the recs.

It's one of the two metal albums I bought this year (the other being Mastodon).

BTW, what do you think of it? I keep waiting for it to just rock my ass off, and it never seems to. Great playing, and good production, but I wish it rocked a little more.

Great.......give it a few more spins........audiobill

Hey, Stone:

I really like "Oceanus". In fact, it's vying for top honours in the Best of 2002 list that I'm currently in the process of compiling -- although this will probably change by "press time" next week.

Let me give you some adjectives for the CD:
destructive and beautiful
vast and oppressive
melodic and sparse
...... I just love it's ability to go beyond the typical "thrash". Indeed, the tension that's built up is what imho makes this a great CD.
Furthermore, I especially enjoy the sonics & atmosphere that is created in the CD from beg/mid/end. The diversity within the "album" from one track to the other is very interesting and keeps me attentive on each successive listen.

Perhaps, you should give it a few more spins and see if anything changes.

Alright, I'll stay away from metal...

...erm...

...um...

Can you give us examples, of stuff that rawks without being metal? The Faint -type rawking, perhaps? QOTSA -type rawking?

I concur with the GVSB choice, it rawks.

Oh, and if you want to just full-out for 30 minutes (?...if that), definitely check out Bad Religion, The Process of Belief. But that might drift into metal territory, even though it's punk. Short, yet stupendous.
That Bad Religion may be right up my alley...Stone
Dec 2, 2002 9:30 AM
Can you compare it to any of their other albums? A couple more recent albums by them disappointed me, but I like most of their stuff that I've heard.

I don't consider Bad Religion to be metal at all (unless they've really changed).

Recent examples of stuff that rawks:

Hot Snakes
Oxes
QOTSA
Sleater-Kinney (to an extent)
Trail of Dead

I guess I'm looking for guitar-driven rock that's gonna get me looking like this:

Stone
Okay...definitely...DustyChalk
Dec 2, 2002 8:48 PM
...definitely get that Bad Religion, then. It's the best thing they've done in years. It's definitely better than their last coupla albums. I think it's the best thing they've done ever, but I've never been a huge fan, just a sort of passing fan.

PS That little guy looked kinda spastic on the machine upstairs (was running IE) -- you might want to knock that off before you give yourself whiplash.

Did ya pick up White Stripes White Blood Cells?

Probably my favorite rock thing this year.

But since I'm one anal dude, I need to point out it's a 2001 release (although it may have been reissued this year on another label maybe?).

Must have been reissued. I thought it seemed like it was a while ago. But, I just happened to notice it said 2002 on the back of my CD when I was listening to it this morning. So, I tossd it out there.
you asked for itRae
Dec 2, 2002 8:33 AM
What constitutes "rocking"? I'm assuming you mean something that's fast, loud, and immediate? Yeah, I can probably help with that.

I went through my list of 2002 releases and jotted down anything I have that would score at least a 7 on a scale where 1 would represent 'aloof,' 'cerebral,' and 'reveals more with subsequent listens.' Here's a few:

Mastodon's <i>Remission</i> is slowpitch softball on this one, but you already knew that. High on Fire is a very similar group (in fact, they toured together) with just a little more cartoonish exaggeration.

As far as indie rock goes, there are the ones you already know like Trail of Dead and Girls Against Boys (although I don't care much for the latter-- sorry Slosh). I've warmed to the new Cave In EP, which rocks in a more atmospheric, complex way (by the way, if this isn't considered 'prog' then there is a double standard at work). Plenty of girl rock in this category too, like Jucifer, Pretty Girls Make Graves, and Sleater-Kinney, but I'm pretty sure you have those already, right? In a similar vein, I'd also recommend the <i>Wiretap</i> EP from Your Enemies Friends (who toured with PGMG). This one is <i>very</i> rocking and might be just what you're looking for.

Plenty of stuff in my collection that rocks in a "spastic" way. Enon, for example, or the nervous art punk of Radio Four. Or, speaking of art rock, two EPs apiece from NYC's Liars and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. You've heard the former, and the latter employs a similar aesthetic, with the added personality of vocalist Karen O. If you're looking to pick up a YYYs EP, I recommend the s/t (sometimes called "<i>Master</i>") over <i>Machine</i>.

Ooh, one that really kicks some serious ass is Kinski's <i>Semaphore</i> EP on Sub Pop. This group does not fu<a></a>ck around. The title track is some seriously crushing post rock. Very clean production on that one, too. I forget, do you have the Oxes album? Oxes Roxes. So do the Fu<a></a>cking Champs, although IMHO if you have <i>IV</i> you don't really need <i>V</i> since it's just more of the same. Vapid's <i>Boom/Bip</i> EP is also good math metal, employing only bass and drums.

I know you've got the Q and Not U from this year, and the Signal to Trust that I sent you... if you like those you may also like the stop/start emocore of Eulcid (<i>The Wind Blew All the Fires Out</i>) or the slightly more complex mathiness of the Vets (on Modern Radio, same as Signal to Trust). And do you have anything by Ten Grand (formerly known as the Vidablue) from Iowa City? Very cool noise rock and this year's <i>The Comprehensive List of Everyone Who Has Ever Done Anything Wrong to Us</i> is as good a place as any to start.

Ohh, some of the most rockin' stuff I bought is in the dreaded 'emo' category. You already know how much the Desaparecidos and Cursive/Eastern Youth rock, but if you want more of that ilk, the new Small Brown Bike/Casket Lottery split (from your neck of the woods) and the debut from Minus the Bear are equally as good.

Not as much garage rock as last year, but some strains remain like the Strokes-y album from the French Kicks, <i>One Time Bells</i>. Also the sloppy full-throttle sounds of the Catheters, Sweet J.A.P., and the Goochers. Oh yeah, and the bass-less boogie of Kill Rock Stars' the Gossip (<i>Arkansas Heat</i> EP).

Punk, punk, punk... you're probably the only one besides me (or nobody, maybe) who would dig this stuff: a new EP from the Arrivals, who I love, a split between the Soviettes and the Valentines, and a very poppy release from Madison, WI's Saving Face. Oh yeah, and Dillinger Four's Situationist Comedy, which is really great. You said you were thinking about exploring these guys; did that ever happen? Unfortunately, the newest one is probably not the best place to start, but man, it's awesome. I also picked up a few things in the hardcore realm like Bailer's Diffusion of Innovations
(continued)...Rae
Dec 2, 2002 8:34 AM
I also picked up a few things in the hardcore realm like Bailer's <i>Diffusion of Innovations</i> and demos from Copeater (humorous) and Damage Deposit (really good, cost me 81 cents).

Lastly, as far as power pop-- Arlo's <i>Stab the Unstoppable Hero</i> is pretty irresistible, but I think you already have that one. Weezer's <i>Maladroit</i> isn't bad, but it isn't a return to form, either. Polara's <i>Jetpack Blues</i> is really good; kinda brit-poppy although they're American. Swish would probably like that one. I got a few other "pop" things like the Makers (glam), the new Marah, and the Weekend (Weezer-y rock from Canada), but frankly, those kinda suck. <img src="http://www.cmj.com/ubb/wink.gif">

Is that enough for ya? Only what... 48 recommendations? Hehe, well, the few I think you should definitely look into are Kinski, Your Enemies Friends, Minus the Bear, and Ten Grand.

All right, back to work...

Nice list. I too have been lacking in more rock oriented stuff that I've liked recently. (Outside the latest White Stripes, whom I believe have become way too hip to be cool, is that possible?) Anyway, I'll probably try to get a chance to hear some of those you mentioned. Since they're mostly unfamiliar, I'll probably try something off your condensed list at the end first, unless you have any other suggestions you think I may particularly like.

Your post also reminds me, once again, that I still need to hear something from Pretty Girls Make Graves. I've wondered about them for a while and heard good things about them, but never heard them. Of course, I still don't believe for a second that they didn't hear that Smiths song before picking their name.

And, by the way, I do hope you took no offense at my swipes at Pitchfork below. I know you work there and all, and I didn't want to be a dick or anything. I just gotta spout off every now and then.
oh, wait!Rae
Dec 2, 2002 9:26 AM
My recommendations were really aimed only at Stone-- I kind of glossed over the stuff I knew he already had, but you should pick up some of those if you want something rocking. Definitely look for the Desaparecidos' <i>Read Music/Speak Spanish</i> and Sleater-Kinney's <i>One Beat</i>. Desaparecidos is the new project of Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst. It's really loud and messy and angry, but not in an aggressive kind of way. The lyrics are fiery and political, with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Frankly, his observations are pretty broad, but the passion in his delivery rescues it from seeming silly. Sleater-Kinney also sings about political concerns, but their outrage is set to more danceable guitar rock. Dylan Hicks referred to <i>One Beat</i> as "revolution, Martha Reeves style," and I can't think of a more apt description. I don't know if you've gotten any of their stuff in the past (IMO, their whole catalogue is worthwhile), but they've definitely taken another huge step forward with this one.

I meant to recommend Ted Leo to you too, when you asked for smart, unpretentious rock recommendations a few months ago. I'm sure you heard him if you were in the comp trading circuit last year, but if you weren't, go pick up <i>The Tyranny of Distance</i> posthaste and thank me later. <img src="http://www.cmj.com/ubb/smile.gif">

I'll start with the four you mentioned at the end. I've heard of all of them but Ten Grand. I also need to get that Pretty Girls Make Graves album.

I've been looking for that Arlo album, but I haven't found it yet. And I still need to get some Dillinger Four too. Damn.

Thanks for the recs.

BTW, have you heard/seen Origami? They're a grrl band, supposedly in the vein of Sleater-Kinney. I just ordered their latest. We'll see what it's like.

Stone
Ten GrandRae
Dec 2, 2002 9:36 AM
Ten Grand is a noisy band from Iowa City. Kinda similar to Frodus although not quite as cohesive in their song structure. They released a couple of albums under the name the Vidablue until Phish guitarist Page McConnell decided that he wanted to use that name for his own side project. He offered them ten thousand dollars to relinquish the moniker, and they took the money and changed their name to Ten Grand.

Haven't heard Origami. Speaking of grrls, though, I went to go see an all-girl math rock band (!!) called V for Vendetta last night. They're on Mr. Lady Records (home of the Butchies and Le Tigre), so I had high hopes, but frankly they were pretty lame. C'est la vie.

It's a direct link to an image at amazon.com and works fine for me, even after clearing my cache. Do you have download images turned off?

I guess the joke is diminished a little when the image doesn't work :-)

I like the last Six By Seven album a lot, but it's not all hard rock. But some of it rocks like a wild pig on crack. What about the new collection of unreleased stuff from System of a Down. Haven't heard it myself but they're kind of artsy smartsy. Or the Jerry Cantrell album? Guess it's not much different from the last AIC album and I was never a big AIC fan myself. Seems to be some good ink on it though.

I hope you didn't run out to Best Buy and pick up that EWM album we were discussing, Stone.

After paying the U.S. exchange rate and a $5.00 money order fee, I sent off the money order to Cafe MuLi in Germany, only to be spanked by this German seller for sending a money order instead of cash, or simply depositing the funds directly into his account! He claimed it would cost him $14 euros to deposit the money order in his account!

He kindly returned my money order, and now, after another bank fee and $1.25 international postage, we should be back in business! I'll keep you posted as to whether the cash ends up <i>lost in the mail</i>! If I am finally successful, the envelope of mouse guts should end up in your mailbox before the New Year! Hehehe...

Nah, I think the CDR copy is enough for me. And, I'm making it sound much worse than it actually is! Even with all the extra charges, the final tally is still less for this two-in-one CD, than for most singles in the store.

Hehehe, <i>coitus interuptus</i>[sic]? Can you say that on a family site? Does anyone's family hang out at Rave Wrecks? You can only call me Alice if we're in chains, dear.

I'm pretty sure that I only sent Stoney a copy of Uncle Davey's Holiday Mixer (henceforth to be known as Hammering a Bag of Cats, borrowing a phrase from our good buddy, Troy). He probably hasn't got it yet since it was in the second batch. He didn't seem interested in Giant Sand so I didn't send one, but if he ever does want a copy, he knows who to ask :-)

Hey little mama, be my friend
You can be the trouble that you think I'm in
I'm a lovely man
Lovely man
Yes I am, I'm a lovely man

I traveled the world, the first time in my life
Fell in love with a woman but she wasn't my wife
I'm a lovely man
Lovely man
Yes I am, I'm a lovely man

Oooh Hooo
A lovely man

Livin' high in a house of mirrors
Let a girl named Delilah cut my hair
I'm a lovely man
A lovely man
Yes I am, I'm a lovely man
(Right by damn, I'm a lovely dog gone man.)

You never told me when I started out
I'd be sailin all alone in a sea of doubt
And end up a lonely,
Lonely Man

Lonely,
Lovely man

Settin' my sight on some bigger things
Mama's old Cadillac and diamond rings
I'm a lovely man
Lovely man
What I am is a lovely man
Ooo Hooo
A lovely man
(keep on a dancin' and a prancin')
Ooo Hooo

So, Folklore, eh? Seems like I should like 16 Horsepower, but so far, I haven't. I see AMG gives them 4 1/2 stars for Folklore.

Which of their description would this album fall into:

Rockabilly Revival
Post-Grunge
Alt-Rock/Pop
Alt-Country Rock?

Yeah, I saw the picture of the little <i>dumbo</i>. I'll leave that between you two. :-) <i> . . . when i see an elephant fly . . .</i>

I'd go with Alt-Country Rock of those four. Some of their earlier stuff could be classified as rockabilly I suppose, but not really on <i>Folklore</i>. Post-grunge?? I don't see that at all. Possibly alt-rock/pop.

So far, <i>Folklore</i> is not doing a lot for me either, but I haven't spent much time with it.

But I was just getting a red X there before. Speaking of X, have you (or anyone else) heard the Original Sinners album?

I've looked at that SOAD CD. Kind of a strange packaging idea - no cover, and the CD itself has maybe five different designs that it comes in. Maybe I'll read some reviews of that one.

I never was a very big AIC fan either, so I'll probably pass on the Jerry Cantrell.

BTW, how is that Boston album? We all know you have it and love it. Is there a reworking of "Amanda" on that album?
