| Air Drum albums | DustyChalk Dec 1, 2002 10:08 PM | | AP recently (well, a couple months ago) listed their top 10 "air drum" albums, and since I own and like 3 of them, I thought I'd solicit opinions on the remaining 7, and possibly obvious-by-their-omission releases that you think should be put on the list. The ones I have: * Metallica - ...And Justice For All * Slayer - Reign in Blood * Helmet - Meantime The ones I don't: * Breadwinner - The Burner * Don Caballero - American Don * Brad - Frame & Canvas * Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart * Meshuggah - Nothing * The Warmers - The Warmers * Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity |
| it's Braid not Brad | Masonjar Dec 2, 2002 8:07 AM | | Brad was some Pearl Jam side project, can't think that they had much in the way of power/math/thrash drumming.
As far as Don Caballero goes, Damon Che is one of the most amazing drummers I've ever seen.. he can play anything. I'm surprised they mentioned American Don because, well, it's just not a very good album, though his drumming is as impressive as ever. I'd pick Don Caballero II way over that one.
Frame and Canvas by Braid has some great drumming on it, he's a very subtle drummer, throws in some really cool fills and plays on the off-beat a lot, some really creative playing.. though I dunno if it really warrants being on an "air-drum" list..
I've never heard the Warmers. From what I've heard of them, Dillenger Escape Plan is some of the most mathy intense metal core you're likely to hear.. They're on my wish list..
I'm glad they recognized Slayer.. my pick would be South of Heaven.. the fast parts are even more impressive due to the generally slower tempos of the songs..
How did they miss Napalm Death From Enslavement to Obliteration! Or at least some Painkiller.. Mick Harris is a monster drummer who deserves an air-drum mention..
I'd also throw in a few classic punk albums: the Circle Jerk's Group Sex and the Dead Kennedys' Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegatables.. both had some amazing speed drumming.. when I first heard these records it was downright comical, because it was unreal how fast they were playing..

| Yeah, I knew that... | DustyChalk Dec 2, 2002 8:13 PM | | ...typo. Actually, I was thinking "Braid not Plaid". The comment on the Warmers said something about "...all 25 people who have this CD...", so I have a feeling it's pretty obscure. I will post more when I get home, if anyone is curious. I agree about South of Heaven. Thanks for the others -- I'm a big Mick Harris fan, but post-drumming days. Will have to check out that Napalm Death. Painkiller is insane. Have you ever heard Bill Rieflin doing "TV Song"/"TV II"? Thanks for the other rec.'s. |
