| Opeth + Porcupine Tree | ajw3 Dec 2, 2002 7:25 AM | | Not sure if many fans of Porcupine Tree know this but Steven Wilson is a fan of and produced the last 2 Opeth CD's including their newest release, Deliverance. He also played and sang some backup on songs from Deliverance and Blackwater Park. I also feel that you can here some Opeth inlfunces in some of the harder parts on In Absentia by PTree.
Just some side info.

| Whatever happened to that Opeth comp? | ajw3 Dec 2, 2002 11:04 AM | | Finally got around to getting the technical issues solved but work and other things have kept me busy for the past few months.
How is everyone?

| Guess everyone else is busy too | Jim Clark Dec 2, 2002 12:53 PM | | Been kind of slow, which is fine for now since I've had all kinds of things going on as well. Not work related of course, but life in general.
BTW, the new Covenant CD is pretty good. Not as hard as I might have liked but good none the less. Also really like the new Assemblage 23 release but that may be too techno/industrial for your tastes.
Good to see you around.

| Fine, thanks, and you? | DustyChalk Dec 3, 2002 12:20 AM | | I'm surprised there hasn't been about a thousand "I'm fine, who're you again?" You've been missed by those of us with taste, though. (Qualifier: I'm not saying that you haven't been missed by people without taste; and I'm not saying that all the people with taste have missed you, I'm just saying.) So, is Opeth still the only metal band you like? I've been getting into some extreme metal, and some pop metal -- Cradle of Filth, Tristania, Children of Bodom, Sigh, In Flames, Crown, Siebenburgen (name sounds like a cross between the Swedish Chef and "The Count"), Therion, Garden of Shadows, anything even remotely Buckethead related (Cobra Strike), Theatre of Tragedy, Wolverine, Katatonia, Darkane, Entwine, a lot of The End stuff, Lacrimosa, Anathema (worth checking out if you like Porcupine Tree, methinks, especially the latest album, A Fine Day to Exit), Arcturus, Nightwish, Within Temptation...the list goes on and on...am about to discover Ulver... |
| I knew that. | DarrenH Dec 2, 2002 2:18 PM | | Hello Andrew,
I have only heard two tracks from the Blackwater Park release. Both were on comps that I received from Demetrio. The first track featured all clean vox. Slow in tempo and was outstanding. The next track was clean vox in the beginning and then went into the death growls as the tempo increased and the music got heavier. The music and the musicianship of Opeth are outstanding. The clean vocals are outstanding. The death vocals ruin it for me. Personally, I would like Opeth better if they eliminated those death growls and sang clean. The death vox is keeping me from purchasing thier CDs.
I am sure Steven did an excellent job producing Blackwater Park. And I am sure the new release by Opeth is equally well done. Just can't get past those death vocals though.
Just my two cents.

| I got your package in the mail yesterday. | DarrenH Dec 2, 2002 5:56 PM | | Thanks again Demetrio. You are too kind. I am really enjoying the music on these also. Especially the 70's revisited. Some great classic prog on that disc. Isn't it amazing how much Eloy sounds like Ian Anderson. Were they considered Tull sound alikes? Whick Eloy was that song from anyway? I gotta check some of that out.
Very curious about that Pavlov Dog track also. I have never heard of them. I like that tune. Which album is that from? What year?
Some of the other tracks I was already familiar with (Van der Graff Generator, Triumvirat, Camel, Focus). All very cool when joined together in one comp. More on these later. Thanks again Demetrio.

| Revisiting the 70's | Demetrio Dec 3, 2002 2:31 AM | | Glad to know the new package arrived safely there, can hardly wait to hear your definitive impressions about the two new comps.
The ELOY track in the comp (Future City) is from one of their earlier albums, "Floating", released in 1974, still in the Hard Rock/Prog vein. After this album, their music became more Floyd sounding. From their hard rock period, Floating is my personal favorite, and from their second phase (the Floyd-is period) the favorites are Power and the Passion, Dawn and Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes.
PAVLOV'S DOG is another favorite of mine too. The track you liked, "Theme from Subway Sue", is from their debut and best release (IMO), "Pampered Menial" (1975).
Happy listening
Demetrio. |
