Standing in the Shadows of MotownTroy

Saw this documentary film over the holiday weekend at the local art theater. It's about all the studio musicians who performed on all the Motown singles from the early 60s thru the mid 70s. Amazingly enough, these hundreds of songs were performed from the same pool of about 25 guys (who called themselves "The Funk Brothers"), depending on who was around that week.

The interviews with these guys are pretty fun and interesting offering a detailed glimpse into the Motown process. Sad how many died without any sorta recognition. None were present at the "Motown 25" show a few years ago- forgotten men. The interviews are interspersed with footage from a recent reunion of these guys paired with modern singers like Bootsy Collins, Joan Osborne and Ben Harper. This recent concert footage is a blast, even if it seems to be a bit tame. Plus the modern singers really show just how unimportant the vocalist (who ended up getting all the credit) was to the Motown system.

A must for anyone that frequents this board that likes that sotra music, and even if you don't, you'll still enjoy the music biz insider stories.
Thanks for the word. Sounds quite worthwhile! (nt)Darius
