Anyone heard Linda Thompson's Fashionably Late?Dumbo

Just curious. I have the opening track, Dear Mary, on the latest Paste Magazine sampler which features much of her family including ex-hubby Richard on background vocals and his trademark guitar. Very nice song. Any reports on how good the whole album is? They review it in the same issue and really think highly of it, closing the review with "Linda Thompson is back, and back with a superb album. By mining the mother lode of traditional folk music, she's created a masterpiece for the new millenium." Hyperbole? A reviewer looking for a new source of payola? Sometimes I wish they would try to have a little more perspective when describing albums instead of sounding like a PR person for the record label.

Anyway, that aside, is it a nice return to form for Linda?

Haven't heard her since way back before she split was Richard. She was on Diane Rheahm's (sp?) radio show (it's also avail online w/streaming I think)for an hour a while back... she has the same vocal problem that Diane has (her gratey voice drives me bonkers, but she occasionally has a good guest). The few cuts there sounded pretty good, but I admit there's just too much other stuff I want first.

I agree... "<i>masterpiece for the new millenium</i>"... is a little much methinks. But I'd also like to hear from anyone here that's heard it all. Reviewing an album is not as easy as many think... you <b>should</b> write it for both fans who know the artists's history, and newbies who have no clue what kind of sound to expect... few reviews even come close to that; it's something that drives me nuts.

Good to see she's (emotionally) gotten over the messy split with Richard. Richard Thompson has been a fave of mine since FC... his more recent stuff is pretty good as well (well, more than pretty good). I taped some live-in-the-studio solo stuff he did on Terry Gross's radio show some years ago off FM. I plan to convert it to digital down the road... it's pretty powerful, and excellent quality.
