CRSV 6 - A New Begining (a post for all)Jim Clark
Dec 4, 2002 9:28 AM
Since no one objected, I am pleased to handle V 6 of the series. The timeline will go something like this. After Christmas I will send out the call for tracks and after allowing for stragglers, the disc should be in your hands the latter half of January. This seems to jive with the 2 months spread that was generally seen as a good time frame.

Clearly the series is driven by a few music loving fools who graciously contribute every time. While not discouraging this trend I'm making a concerted effort to expand the contributor base, and yes, this means you.

Starting now, I am calling on all my internet friends both real and imagined (on my part) to kick in a track so start thinking of one now. Really, I have an unfair advantage with BeatleBob back in the fold where he belongs (Sorry, you'll always be Beatle Bob) While this list isn't complete, it will give you an idea of what I'm after:

Snowbunny-a track without ANY influence from Indieana or Sloshed.

KKS-Quit your lurking

Forever Autumn-Now that you got the burner thing figured out you should kick in a track. It will also count for your long lost brother BarryL

ChipB-blues may stick out badly but what the heck.

Rae and Stone-We'll need something to balance out the prog

RPM-Do whatever it is you do, almost always good.

Nobody-Seldom see your name on group comps

Richmon-We need you

Finch-let loose of the 50 bucks already and buy a freakin' burner. At least ask Santa for one on Christmas.

jsujo1-I have no idea what the heck kind of music you are always talking about. Time to actually share it

Darius-Are you still alive? Nobody works this much.

J-OK, only if you are up to it

Troy-I know you hate these things but live dangerously.

DustyChalk-I'm asking now, don't make me come over there.

Yech, well on second thought-nevermind

I'm sure I'm leaving out a million others but I can only post so many words without being cut off. That doesn't leave you off the hook, Les, Proud Mary, Mike, Tony, the three or four Chris's, tug, Midfi, Hyfi (where's Lowfi? Oh yeah, me).

That, combined with the regular heavy contibutors ought to give us about 78 tracks. How to get them on disc is my problem.

Your pleading has worked, count me in......

Let me know at the appropriate time what you need.

I'm in, just let me know if you're looking for something current or not, or if there are any other requirements.
Ah, good pointJim Clark
Dec 4, 2002 10:01 AM
While it's not my rule, the general feeling was that it should be reasonably current. I wouldn't reach past 2000. Other than that everything is pretty much fair game.

Thanks much,
jc
Question Jim.DarrenH
Dec 4, 2002 10:04 AM
I would like to contribute a song or three. Whether they are used or not I don't care. Should I burn these to disc and then mail that to you? Track list and artist names included of course. If that's the case you can email your address to me at:

freetaco@chartermi.net

If you prefer another way let me know. Thanks

Darren
another Question Jim.HYFI
Dec 4, 2002 10:14 AM
This series is called "current" rotation. Does this mean stuff from recent comps, or whatever "I" have been rotating currently? I don't ask for alot of what is traded since I don't have a clue what most of it is and don't want to ask for stuff I probably won't like. I also seem to be way out of the loop of insider trading that goes on here so alot of you guys see a bunch more stuff than I do.

I'd like to contribute but not sure what your after. Much of what I liked and listen to is probably way old and passe' by now.

here's my opinionMasonjar

pick something recent (ie.. since 2000) that you think not many people around here have heard that might knock their socks off. pretend we're your friends coming over to jam some tunes.. what would you play for us? what would make us go "whoa!!!" Get the tunes from anywhere you want, though most people would probably like to hear songs that have not been included on other comps.. :-)

I must have mis understoodHYFI
Dec 4, 2002 10:28 AM
I was under the impression that it was supposed to be something that I ran out and purchased after hearing it on a comp. I don't listen to much newer music so most of what I own won't fit into the post-2000 range. I would still like to contribute somehow though.
As far as the "whoa" factor, most have said "Whoa-what crap"(nt)HYFI

Thanks Jar, great replyJim Clark

As I'd expect from a veteran editor. Just FYI, I was going through some old envelopes the other day and noticed that you have my address wrong. I'm at Lakeview Ave rather than Lakeside Ave. I just finally noticed all the messages the Post Office writes on all of them. to their credit, they've all made it anyway.

This ought to be great, or at the very least a great sampling of music.

General things:

Feel free to send tracks whenever it's convenient just please make sure you include:

Track title
Band Name
CD title would be useful for some
Your name and screen name if it's wildly different from the moniker your momma gave you. I sometimes get confused.

If you need my address you can email me and you can find the email page here; http://home.everestkc.net/jimclark/email.htm

"...may stick out badly..." ???Chip_B
Dec 4, 2002 12:38 PM
Your bias is showing, Jim. I was thinking that a Blues cut would stick out beautifully.[:o)

I'm game to send you something and it may or may not be a Blues or Blues-rock cut. There's some fairly off-the-wall stuff that I've been listening to lately in addition to my usual diet of guitar wanking, so who knows?

I agree that the tune should be something we'd play for friends that we're convinced would peg the 'holy schitt!' meter; unfortunately, tastes vary so radically among RR posters that the 'whoas' will likely only come from the expected sectors and a lot of 'this sucks!' will come from practically everybody else. Ah, but what the hell...I'll send you something anyway.

I'm also hoping you were kidding about YECH not contributing (hard to tell considering the history, but I suspect that you weren't). If he was of a mind to provide a cut, it would almost certainly be superb; his last two comps were very well-received for good reason. Just my two cents, and it's probably a moot point anyway.

I'll have something to you in time for inclusion. Thanks for inviting me to participate; just let me know when you need the cut.

-Chip
Short answer-Everyone is encouraged to join inJim Clark
Dec 4, 2002 1:33 PM
that was the point originally and while I know for a fact that everyone was always welcome to contribute but didn't for a variety of reasons. Well I want this to be like CMJ on steroids. Wide variety. Isn't that what a sampler should be?

ahhh, finally someone with good taste emerges ;-)RPM

I'm in. I'll be ready, willing and able when duty calls!

The only trouble I see is ...Davey
Dec 4, 2002 1:41 PM
that you will probably get more submissions than you can use so to save people the trouble of sending in something that won't be included on the comp, why not institute some kind of sign up? Maybe cut it off after the first 16 people sign up or something like that. Some of the regular contributors like myself could then hold off until others have been given a chance to sign up so you get a more diverse mix of contributors than normal.

But it's just a thought. I firmly believe the curator of each volume should be able to set the rules to their liking and that includes how they want to orchestrate the process and also how they want to define current rotation.

Good luck :-)

Then again, you could subtitle this one, "Make Mine A Double," or something much more clever and just fill a couple of CDs if you get too many songs.
No double samplers!Davey
Dec 4, 2002 1:59 PM
There will be another one in a couple months. A double just makes it more costly in time, materials and mailing costs (all of which can be very substantial for the one who takes on the project). If anything, I would like to see it limited to around 16-18 songs because it just gets too confusing (for me) when you have that many diverse artists on one CD.

But like I said, I would prefer to see it left up to the person who's doing the compiling to come up with any guidelines.

Especially good point about the postage, mailing the suckers costs more than making them.
Running Contributor List-Great IdeaJim Clark
Dec 4, 2002 2:25 PM
I'm going to keep it running, perhaps not daily, but pushing hard with the mixture of personel that I want. Indieana is right. Pushing new folks to get involved and having them end up on the cutting room floor would do more harm than good.

1. Les
2. DarrenH
3. Nobody
4. Hyfi
5. Special mystery guest contributor
6. Beatle Bob-I am going out on a limb here I'd really like one from you.
7. Chip B
8. RPM
9. Dustychalk-another big assumption on my part

that leaves 7 more. I may take one but I could also piggyback a personal comp along with leaving more space for everyone else.

Great point, thanks for pointing out the details I overlooked.

Man, my feelings are really hurt....tugmcmartin
Dec 4, 2002 4:05 PM
Just kidding. I do, however, have a few tracks that i'd like to send your way. I'm pretty sure they'd end up on the cutting-room floor, but i really don't care. They're coming your way anyway.

Ok, but it's not going to be anything within the last 5 years...HYFI
Dec 4, 2002 5:56 PM
but it will probably be something only Chip has heard since I sent him a copy a long time ago.

I hope thats not a problem since I already used all my "Wow your friends" tracks on my comps.

Guess I'm out!

No hold on... how about some cool Sinatra! How about some New Order, or Porcupine Tree, or Tears for Fears...

Hmmm... nope, still not my influences... Guess it'll have to be another shot of The Be Good Tanyas or 54-40! ;-)

Since I'm not allowed to submit (Hey Jim, what if I nominate something good this time? :-)), how about Spoon's "Don't Let It Get You Down"? I won't squeal :-)

: )

It's not so much that you aren't allowed but you've heard the comments before, it is becoming a club and it's my personal belief that the comp and the forum in general will be better served by including a wider mix of music and people. Who knows, I may be back in two weeks with my hat in my hand begging for a track.

I believe I have at least two songs on every CRS comp so far so I'll gladly sit this one out. I was just kinda teasing Snowie. Of course she has stuff to contribute that she didn't hear first from RR.
I do?Snowbunny

Could you send me a list, Sloshy? I mean from something besides my extensive BTO/Guess Who collection? ;-)

Have you heard it yet? I was just reading a nice review of their new one. You're the one who brought those two young and talented ladies into the land of indie hipsters, right?

I can contribute a song. Although . . . .Darius
Dec 4, 2002 5:46 PM
. . . I hate to promise one, because I haven't yet sent out my 1987 comps yet from this summer!

If I send a song it will likely be something hip-hop-hoppity.

A group comp that ENCOURAGES eclecticism. Me likes.
