The Ultimate Comp!Klaatu76
Feb 27, 2003 12:04 PM
Give me just one song that comes to mind that you'd put on The Ultimate Comp, a comp of songs so great it's one folks will want to have on heavy & repeated rotation. Doesn't matter when the song was released, classic rock, indie rock, heavy metal, prog, 60's, 70's, 80's, as long as it's totally excellent in your opinion. If it turns out to be songs from different eras, then that would make for more of an interesting mix (and big challenge for sequencing). I'll think about what song I want and post later. If enough responses and it looks like something worth really putting together, we'll do it.

The Dread Zeppelin version would be best, I suppose.

I'm beginning to think you don't even have any albums, only comps.

I'll toss one out that I've been listening to a bunch lately and have always liked since I can remember. I figure an ultimate comp coud use a little Elvis, but stearing clear of things that are just over the top obvious, I'll suggest.....

I know I said "give me just one song" but I made a list of the first 5 that came to mind. From this, I would have to pick one. You guys can do the same if you'd like, or let someone else pick a track from your list of five.

1. I Saw Her Standing There - Beatles
2. Four Sticks - Led Zeppelin
3. Ramble Tamble - CCR
4. Ain't That A Shame - Cheap Trick
5. Pure And Easy - Who

j, you're not serious about Stairway To Heaven, I assume. I was hoping we could avoid staples like that. And yes, I have albums but I love putting together comps about as much as anything :-)
Had me sweating there for a secondChuck G

Just ONE, I kept repeating, JUST ONE....

1. All The Diamonds In the World- Bruce Cockburn
2. Neuclear Apathy- Crack The Sky
3. Only In Your Heart-America
4. Indian Sunset- Elton John
5. Keep On Tryin- Poco
6. Close To You- Carpenters
7. Stuff and Nonsense- Split Enz (but use the 7 worlds collide version with Eddie Vedder singing)

Oh, thats right, you said 5.

Rick, I got it Saturday. Thank you. I haven't really listened to it very critically yet but did spin it last weekend. My initial impressions are it sounds somewhat like George Harrison influenced Beatles. I do remember liking the last song in particular.

Wasn't there a group call Ross in the late 70's? Is this the same band?

Didn't know there was a band called Ross in the late 70's. This Ross is from Spain so I don't know if they're the same but most likely not. The song called "Cosmos Bell" is playing in my head as I key. I hear more of a strong McCartney influence myself. I got the last copy from Not Lame :-) They can't get any more of their stuff, unfortunately.

Good call on Nuclear Apathy -- I've seen you mention them once or twice...how long have you known about them? I thought me and the former board member Chip were the only ones who loved this band?

I've know of CTS since my college days (1975-80). I was playing the first CTS LP a few weeks ago. I forgot how good side 2 was. As for the Neclear Apathy song, I don't know why but that one just sticks out. I love the accoustic guitar in that song and the timing changes as well.

Or, if you're the kinda guy who likes power pop...I suggest you try Electric Lash by The Church, which I was planning to send to you very soon anyway.

And, of course, I never tire of 7 Chinese Brothers by REM, or Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead, or Squonk by Genesis, or Watusi Rodeo by Guadalcanal Diary...
Here's one that must be in any ultimate comp...Demetrio

Troy

The Mermen album featuring 'Burn' is out of print but I managed to pick up a copy from a guy in San Francisco on E-bay. He seemed astonished that someone in the Uk was bidding on it.

It's a pretty interesting album and I'm enjoying it. Thanks for the heads-up on '6'

Cheers

Les

but since you didn't, I will.

Fugazi - "Waiting Room"

:-)
I wanted to, but a little voice told me to save it for you . . .Stone

or something like that. :-)

Great song. I think I can see a Fugazi "phase" coming on for me soon, where I listen to their stuff a ton in a short period of time.

Have you seen the Instrument movie? It's pretty good.

...record executive?

"I don't want to work, I just want to imagine comp.'s in my head all day..."

Since we're in "classic rock" mode:

Elton John - Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding

Nah, a bit too long.

I'll second Chuck G's call on Crack the Sky, Nuclear Apathy
that's one that can be listened to repeatedly. But he already called that. If you need supply, can deliver.

Peter Gabriel - Mercy Street...nah...
Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight...nah...
Genesis - Mama...nah...
Einsturzende Neubauten - NNNAAAMMM...now we're talking...that's my final answer.

It would have to include "Where do the Children Play?" I could think of a lot more, but that one came to mind first (probably coz of the references to "crack the sky" in these threads! :-)
