Feb 27, 2003 3:43 PM | | Okay I now realize the post I made below about "The Ultimate Comp" was just such a broad proposition that it had little chance of taking off. "Ultimate" means different things to different people, whatever. So, here's another comp idea but I'm not asking anyone to contribute anything except ideas for song selections (unless you want to contribute). So, to the subject of this post: what songs blow you away when you listen to them in the headphones? Here's a couple of headphone classics I can think of right off:
1. Whole Lotta Love - Zeppelin
2. Lucky Man - ELP
3. Hendrix - ?
4. Time - Pink Floyd
I did a similar post a few months ago about tracks that are widely-panned back and forth in the stereo field. So, I'll go back and find that thread, but if you wanna post some more suggestions here, that would be great. I'd like to put together a comp specifically featuring tracks that mess with your head in headphones, as in the above examples. Have you ever been listening to a recording in the 'phones and swore you heard something from outside your head, like from another part of the room and it freaked you out but it was only in the recording? That type of effect is also what I'm looking for, a really 3D holographic sound but in plain old stereo.

I'll add "Los Endos" by Genesis. Great moment where it builds to a crescendo, slowly coming together into mono...then crashes back down in full stereo. You don't have to be impaired to appreciate it (but it doesn't hurt). |
