| Any Leonard Cohen fans? New purchase along with others... | Audio Girl Feb 27, 2003 5:17 PM | | I just picked up his first release for $1.98 -- original release M- vinyl , "Songs of Leonard Cohen". Includes the beautiful ballad "Suzanne" and AMG gave it 5 stars. What other releases of his would you recommend?
I'm only through the first few songs and like what I hear so far. Interesting lyrics, beautiful arrangements, nice vocals.
I also picked up (all on vinyl:
1. Freddie Hubbard -- self-titled on Blue Note Reissue Series -- $14.98. A little pricey, trying to expand my jazz exposure.
2. K-Tel's "Music Machine" -- $.50 guilty pleasure that is gonna have to go back because it is warped. Rats! Included some great songs by Marvin Gaye, Wild Cherry, Kiss, Mannfred Man's Earth Band, Elton John (GBYBR), Foreigner.
3. Columbia Record Productions "Remember How Great?" -- Compilation including stuff by Count Basie, Louie Armstrong, Duke Ellington. I bought it for Les Brown's "Sentimental Journey" (vocals by Doris Day). You may remember my story about my Dad & this song always reminds me of him. $.50
4. Janis Ian -- Aftertones -- $.50
5. Poco -- Legend -- $.50
6. Michael Jackson -- Thriller, M- original release gatefold LP. Guilty pleasure. $3.98
Total investment = a little over $20 |
| Here's a couple of Cohen's that I really like..... | tentoze Feb 27, 2003 5:42 PM | | Songs of Love and Hate- "Famous Blue Raincoat" is one of my favorite tunes by anyone ever.
Into the 80's, his voice managed to drop off the bottom of the scale, going from already deep to something like a 20hz tone generator. That said, The Future and I'm Your Man, from late 80's-early 90-s, are two others that I still spin regularly. Some amazing songs on those two.
The last thing I picked up was Field Commander Cohen- a live set from some time, maybe late 70's- I wasn't impressed, and the recording quality was awful. |
| I'm Your Man... | nobody Feb 28, 2003 6:01 AM | | I've always been preplexed by this LP. I like quite a bit of it, but there are some parts that just make me cringe. I love songs like First We Take Manhattan, Everybody Knows, and the title track. But some of the other stuff just comes off on the cheezy side to me. I would blame it on the dated use of synths, but I felt the same way back when it came out.
How does The Future compare? I've never heard anything off that one. |
| I'm Your Man... | tentoze Feb 28, 2003 9:06 AM | | They're quite similar in style, although I prefer The Future. Chiming synths, doom and gloom worn on a dirty sleeve- I seem to remember him performing "Democracy" at Clinton's 1st Inaugural Party- not one of my favorite Cohen tunes. The title cut, however, is. |
| I don't like the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk. :-). | Swish Feb 27, 2003 6:00 PM | | Most of you know that famous line... |
| Freddie, are you ready? | jack70 Mar 2, 2003 9:06 AM | | (I'm afraid not many will get the pun... oh well)
Freddie Hubbard is one of my faves. The whole dang BN catalog is great, and I recently saw his "Hub-Tones"(62) album on sale (CD ver) as a markdown. I didn't even know it had been released here on CD (only in Japan). I've got a shelf of BN stuff (LPs), but most is the re-issue stuff (it was actually issued 3 separate times on LP, I think). The late great Lee Morgan is another great trumpet player to look for on BN. Much of the BN catalog BTW, has been luxuriously reissued by Mosaic in their great box sets (both LP & CDs). I don't have the cash to get most of their releases, but if you really like an artist, their re-issues are to die for. |
