See what you started. Darius?

Same rules as before, rank these 5:

1. The Cure: Disintegration
2. Pretenders: s/t
3. REM: Document
4. Talking Heads: Remain in Light
5. U2: Joshua Tree

80's suck.

They are all less than 5.

Sorry, just my opinion.
All are great...tough to chooseMr MidFi

And I mean that. 2 of them are on my all-time top 20. Let me try to sort them...

1. (tie) Pretenders & Joshua Tree - Once you're in the all-time 20, there's very little space between.
3. Document - I really love REM, but this one is not my fave by a long shot. Now if you'd said Reckoning...
4. Remain in Light - Barely gets the nod here, just because it's tighter than Disintegration.
5. Disintegration - Still love this goth/pop/prog master work. A little dreary and overlong in spots, but very good overall.

1. Remain in Light. Tops this 5 by a mile. Found the Heads in uncharted territory. Massively rhythmic with insanely wicked Adrian Belew guitar screeching over the top of it. Mastercylinder, you need to trry this album again.

2. Document. Some great songs and melodies here, pretty solid all the way through. This was the album that the band always tried to repeat. Is this emo?

3. Pretenders. Raw and punky. Fun, but not earth shattering.

4. Joshua Tree. One of my favorite National Parks and one of my least favorite bands. Ultimately a very transparent album that relies on it's politics to make an impression. Musically, it's very simple and repetitive.

5. I always thought the Cure was a silly cartoon band. Alice Cooper without the camp. They carry all the worst pretensions of the most annoying prog bands without the writing or playing to pull it off.

Never really did like R.E.M., so <I><B>Document</I></B> goes at the bottom -- #5.

The next one is tough -- I've heard U2, <I><B>Joshua Tree</I></B> too many times, but that's because I loved it. The Pretenders get the #4 position, only because I am less familiar with that album, but could change with a replaying. U2 get the coveted #3 position.

The Cure -- gotta violently disagree with Troy on this one. "<I><B>Disintegration</i></B> is the greatest album ever!" Well, almost. I guess you gotta appreciate the darker side of music, and knowing Troy's Power Popper tastes, I can see why he doesn't like it.

Talking Heads -- Remain in Light -- almost gets ousted because of the lame, overplayed, "Once in a Lifetime", but side one is so good (as are the rest of the songs), it still manages to retain the top spot. Essential.

Remain In Light
Pretenders
Document
Disintegration
Joshua Tree

Remain in Light is just too great and interesting and different from everything else that was being released at that time, not to top this list...still olds up well today.

Pretenders sounds a little dated to me but had a whole bunch of great great songs, and rock needed a hit album with a tough minded woman fronting it.

The bloom was off the rose for me by the time Document was released, someone else said if it had of been Reckoning it could well have topped the list, I could throw in Murmer too. But it does get points for having a Wire cover :-)

My comments on Document could be repeated for Disintegration...Boy's Don't Cry, Head on the Door even 17 Seconds would have had a higher ranking.

Never a big U2 fan, I finally got Joshua Tree, just to fill a hole in my collection. Listened once or twice, I think I had heard the whole thing by that time anyway, and haven't since. It's undeniably consistent, but never rises above mediocrity for me.
