Doors - Morrison Hotel |
| re: Jumpin' on the bandwagon: Rank these 70's Classics | Troy Feb 28, 2003 8:57 AM | | 1. Who's Next. The band's high water mark IMO. People always mention Quadrophenia, while it had some incredible songs on it, I never liked they did whole rock opera thing. Too much like Andrew Lloyd Weber for me.
2. Morrison Hotel. "Well I woke up this mornin and I got myself a be-arrrr!" Waiting for the sun too. There's a few real gems on this release. But had you said the first Doors release, it would top this list. Why is Jim Morrison the real deal and Bono a pretender? Morrison was an artist and Bono was a politician.
3. Electric Ladyland. This album has my favorite Jimi song, "Burning the Midnight Lamp", butit's a shame it's so lo-fi. this album was too long and meandering. "Are You Experienced" is the seminal work.
4. IV. This has some of their most popular songs, but the mystique of the band never hooked me. Without that, there's not much else to sink your teeth into.
5. Sticky Fingers. Better than Let it Bleed IMO, but they still just sound like a drunken bar band to me. |
| They sound like a drunken bar band? | Mr MidFi Feb 28, 2003 9:43 AM | | Jeez, you say that like it's a bad thing! Seriously, that's like saying, "I don't like reading Shakespeare...all he does is write in cliches!" |
| Rank and run | Ex-Lion Tamer Feb 28, 2003 8:58 AM | | I don't have a lot of time so I'll rank them without comment, maybe I'll come back later with some thoughts.
Sticky Fingers
Who's Next
Electric Ladyland
IV
Morrison Hotel, (don't have this one so not really fair to include it).

| Too Tough | DustyChalk Feb 28, 2003 9:06 AM | | I can put Rolling Stones at the bottom, only because I'm not a big Rolling Stones fan, but other than that...?!?!? |

| Looks like you've got them in the right order | Grblgrbl Feb 28, 2003 9:12 AM | | The only problem is that Electric Ladyland came out in '68. 1. Who's Next - This is as good as it gets. The album is a juggernaut from start to finish. 2. Sticky Fingers - Really it's a toss-up between this and Who's Next for the 1&2 spots in my book. My favorite Stones album 3. LZ IV - A classic, but the first 2 choices are hard to compete with. 4. Electric Ladyland. My favorite Hendrix 5. Morrison Hotel: A great album, but not in the same league as the others on this list. The only one of the 5 that has some filler on it (as do all Doors albums IMO) |
| I realized the Hendrix in '68 error after I posted | Klaatu76 Feb 28, 2003 9:32 AM | | so technically, it shouldn't be on the list. But it's within 2 years of 1970 and was still dropping jaws at that time (as well as today) |
| re: Jumpin' on the bandwagon: Rank these 70's Classics | DLD Feb 28, 2003 9:32 AM | | Your order, especially since I haven't heard the whole Morrison Hotel LP.
Who's Next is by far my most favorite Who album, although Tommy and Quadraphenia aren't chopped meat.
I vacilate on Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed, and Exile as my favorite Stone's LP. |
| Grblgrbl, DLD & Klaatu have it right | Mr MidFi Feb 28, 2003 9:48 AM | | My comments would be a verbatim quote of Grblgrbl's reply.
BTW, how does one pronounce that moniker? Is it "garble-garble" or "gerbil-gerbil"? |
| re: Jumpin' on the bandwagon: Rank these 70's Classics | 3-LockBox Feb 28, 2003 11:03 AM | | Who's Next- Their best
Led Zep IV- not my favorite, but their most ecclectic and original release to date. Not as good as Houses Of The Holy.
Electric Ladyland- His second best album.
Sticky Fingers- They really started to indulge their love of honky-tonk on this release
Doors- pick any Doors album, and its last on the list. Morrison the poet; so is Rod McCuen, that doesn't him a rock god either. This is the guy Bono paterns himself after. Morrison and Jerry Lewis are France's favorite Americans. Nuff said. |
