Don't have all of these, but...

1: #1 Record: One of my faves. These guys should have been huge.

2. VU & Nico: Very Powerful

3. Funhouse

4. GP

5. Forever Changes: this never really did it for me
No one's bought them in the past 30-35 years, eitherJ

Wow, that's a challenge. Let's see. I know VU & Nico is probably the most 'important' & 'groundbreaking' record on this list, but as great great great as some of the tracks are, I can only sit through 'Heroin' & 'The Black Angel's Death Song' & especially 'European Son' every so often. So for that reason I'd have to put #1 Record at the top. Unlike some other people, I think it's better than Radio City; and it's a perfect listen from beginning to end, with nothing but amazing pop songs, tasty guitar solos, beautiful harmonies, and the feeling that you just can't understand why these songs were never played on the radio. Then I guess I'd have to go with the VU. I mean, it's really difficult to not put that at #1, with great pop songs like 'I'll Be Your Mirror' & 'Sunday Morning,' and way-ahead-of-their-time ditties like 'I'm Waiting For The Man' & especially 'Venus In Furs,' which remains one of the most amazing things I've ever heard in my entire life. The Stooges record just plain rocks. For some strange reason, I think I prefer their first one (and I definitely prefer Raw Power), but it's the rockiest thing on this list & it holds up awfully well considering it's 33 years old. And it's way better than any individual MC5 album. Now, as for GP...so far as country-rock goes, I don't think it can be argued that Gram Parsons was any less influential & ground-breaking than the VU were. But I don't really hear GP as his masterpiece; I think his finest moments are strewn here & there amongst the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and this one, along with Grievous Angel. I don't hear it as a perfect album, or anything close to it. For that reason I look at Gram Parsons' inclusion on this list as a sentimental favorite. Still, it goes without saying that his contribution to pop music over the past 35 years or so has been woefully overlooked. The Love record I don't have & haven't heard in more than 10 years. I've got to bump it towards the top of my want list. They were good, damn good. If you asked me to substitute a rec given my lack of familiarity with Forever Changes, I'd probably pick a Flamin' Groovies record like Teenage Head or Flamingo...or even Shake Some Action.
I'll rank them..Stone

based only on how much I listen to them. Otherwise I think I might go insane trying to figure it out.

(1) Love - Forever Changes
I'm a sucker for strings and horns. This album still blows me away. I think I realized just how much I love this album when one of the standout moments in a movie (Bottle Rocket) to me is the inclusion of a song off this album.

(2) VU & Nico
Groundbreaking, inventive, and still very listenable. An all-time fave of mine.

(3) Stooges - Fun House
This album just hits me over the head like one huge hammer. Just listen to the beginning of "1970" to get a feel for what this album's all about.

(4) Big Star - #1 Record
My second favorite Big Star album, but it's still really hard for me to put it at #4 on this list (meaning I can't believe it's so low). What a great collection of songs. I never travel far without a little Big Star. :-)

(nr) Gram Parsons - G.P.
I don't have this, nor do I think I've ever heard it. Is it high time I invest in a copy of this one?

I'd go with J's advice on Gram Parsons & get Grievous Angel.Swish

I think it's a better record and a better example of his work. Ooh Las Vegas is a personal favorite, but there are plenty of other tracks (20 in all!) on this record that are bound to please.
No need to choose. They're both available on one cd . . .Darius

Hehe, funny that you list Forever Changes because after I got up this morning and had some coffee, that's what I pulled out of the old (and soon to be packed up) record rack to play. I've got three copies, an early UK pressing (the one I pulled out), a German reissue and an early US pressing. Guess you probably guessed by now it's one of my all time faves. No CD though :-)

Anyway, over the course of the day, in and out, work and play, I guess both sides were spun twice. Not much wrong with that album, except maybe some of the flower power lyrics are a little dated.

As you know, probably better than anyone, a big part of the music I listen to and love the most can be tracked back fairly directly to VU & Nico so that would be at the top of my list, even if I do listen to the Love album more. Kind of a tossup on the rest of them and I don't even have a copy of Fun House anymore, in fact not since the days when the floor of my Corvair was covered with 8-track tapes. I do have Raw Power and a couple Iggy albums though. :-) And I came a little late to the party on Gram Parsons and Big Star, especially Big Star since I didn't even own an album until about three years ago when I broke down and bought a used copy of the #1 Record/Radio City combo CD through half.com after realizing I wasn't gonna find any decent used vinyl copies at my normal hangouts.

So, what I'm trying to say is that the order you listed them in looks about right to me :-)
So what city are you moving to?Swish

I remember you made a post asking for advice on good places to live, but I don't remember seeing anything about you making a final decision.

So, you're moving twice? Packing your cds and albums...Swish

was probably half the battle! I really hate moving, and hired some guys to do the grunt work the last time. I don't expect we'll be moving for a long, long time, or, at least, we don't plan to.

Anyway, I'm headed to San Diego in May, so you probably want to avoid moving there. :-p

Hell will be over for him on 7/4/2003...at least for a short time ;-). He returns for combat training 10 days later.

His boot camp grad will actually take place on Independence Day and I cannot think of a better thing I would want to do than attend his graduation ceremonies on July 4th.

Cheers!
