Stuck at home tonight watching the forest green paint dry on my toenails. Gotta an early morning workshop so tonight's a good night to listen to some great music and reflect on the meaning of life. Of course, that might just be the sparkling white wine talking. ;-)
Any recommendations on these concerts coming to my favourite clubs?
Biff Naked
Calexico
Holly McNarland
The Pretenders
Royksopp (I'm sure they've been mentioned here)
The Vines
Craig Northey
Supergrass
The Be Good Tanyas (I'm so there!)
Cheap Trick?
Buju Banton
Fischerspooner?
Polyphonic Spree
Nearly Neil and the Shagadelic Swingers (I would sooo go to this!)
Youssou N'Dour and the Super Etoile Band (Hmm... who would enjoy this?)
Also, I'm going to Zulu Records on Monday. Any indie recs? Cat Power is a for sure.

| Let's get Naked! | DustyChalk Feb 28, 2003 8:37 PM | | Actually, I would stay away from the Bif Naked show -- her second album was a lot more mainstream than her first. Don't get me wrong, it's still a keeper, but... Calexico -- definitely. On top of being excellent live, they always have something special on sale that isn't available elsewhere... Royksopp -- I don't trust most electronica bands live. Look around and see if there are any live reviews. But otherwise, stay away. Youssou N'Dour -- I saw him open for Peter Gabriel many years back, and musically, he was in some ways better. Highly recommended. |
| Ditto on Youssou | tentoze Feb 28, 2003 9:08 PM | | If you have the chance, TAKE IT. |
| March 28, I'm there! | Snowbunny Feb 28, 2003 9:24 PM | | Is he sorta mellow, or should I put on my dancing shoes? |
| Get a groove thang going ... | tentoze Feb 28, 2003 10:32 PM | | Syncopation is not a dirty word.........
:] |
| Again!?! | Snowbunny Feb 28, 2003 9:31 PM | | ;-)
Thanks, Dustbunny. I was planning on picking up Calexico's latest on Monday. Although I'd like to get <i>Black Light?</i> first. They're playing in a mid-size nightclub so it should be a good time!

| Drinking and posting again? | DustyChalk Mar 1, 2003 11:05 AM | | Dude (and I use that in the genderless expletive sense), I have a reputation as a wanker to uphold. I think you're confusing your fantasy with Davey with me again. Yes, everyone seems to think that Black Light is best, but they'll probably be playing lots of stuff from the new one as well, and I think the overall mood of the new one will be more reflective of the concert. If you still have cable, I would recommend watching that electronic press kit I posted in the other thread. |
| Heheheh... that came out wrong! | Snowbunny Mar 1, 2003 4:44 PM | | I mean how can I get naked if I already am... uh... was! :-)
I'll give the new Calexico a listen while I'm at Zulu. Looks like Youssef N'Dour and Polyphonic Spree are in my top three concert picks.
Snowbuns (whatsa wanker?) |
| Main Entry: wanker | DustyChalk Mar 1, 2003 6:14 PM | | Pronunciation: 'wa[ng]-k&r Function: noun one who wanks, one so self-obsessed as to not be able to function normally in society, one who does not interact well with others, one who is introverted, one who needs to get out more, one who needs to get laid rather badly (or, "well", or...I'll-take-it-however-I-can-get-it) |
| Verb: to wank? | Snowbunny Mar 1, 2003 6:23 PM | | Hehehe... so not you! You just haven't found the right Girl of Goth! :-)

| Do ya have any Buffalo tom? | Audio Girl Feb 28, 2003 9:14 PM | | More specifically...(big red letter day). That was an oldie on a prior Stone comp production...included a song called "sodajerk". Nice Cd. I think it would be to your liking, ms. snowgirl. It's an oldie but goodie. I finally just picked it up today for $8.99 at my local used CD store. Along with some jazz, "Never Mind the Bollocks...Here's the Sex Pistols", and another Mellencamp. ;-)
Bob Dylan, huh? Have you heard Blonde on Blonde? It's a classic. You should purchase it, light some incense, get ya the best glass of Ripple wine you can find, put on some bell bottoms, sniff some...
Friday night best,
Ag
sippin' on some fine Pinot Grigio |
| Can you get Erenfelser there? | Snowbunny Feb 28, 2003 9:28 PM | | If you like pinot grigrio, I bet you'd like it.
Do I have <i>Blonde On Blonde</i>? What do <i>you</i> think? :-)
I love that song <i>sodajerk</i>. I'll add it to my wish list. Wanna know what's at the top of my list? A guy that can appreciate lots of good music and loves to go live!!! Heheheh...
sniff some???

| Crisp, sweet and to the point, just like Audiogirl! | Audio Girl Mar 1, 2003 9:59 PM | | I'm gonna hold ya to that, funnybunny, I'm still waiting to play golf with ya. I was gonna even take ya to one of the swank'e'r courses here in the area. Better come soon or I might lose my contacts there...bring your Calloways!
Audiohurl :-) |
| Hey! I learned to play that one on my gee-tar! | Swish Mar 1, 2003 5:22 AM | | That was a fun one to learn. Neat fingerpicking on it, with the D string tuned up to an E so you have the alternating bass notes with the top and 3rd strings. Nice old Dylan tune, on one of my favorite Dylan albums.
I see you followed my advice for getting more characters in the topic line.

| try to catch POLYPHONIC SPREE | Masonjar Mar 1, 2003 6:10 AM | | from what I've heard it's quite an experience, musical, spiritual and otherwise.. they're a "rock orchestra" for lack of a better term, with choir and a small chamber orchestra.. I have their cd and it's really pretty cool, similar to the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev in their lighter moments, if you like that sort of thing ;-)
(I've never seen them live, with so many people in the group, they don't tour much, so I'd take this chance if I were you)

| try to catch POLYPHONIC SPREE | BradH Mar 1, 2003 2:59 PM | | Jar, those guys tour constantly. I wish they would get back in the studio, they're way overdue. It's kinda weird hearing people outside of Texas talk about them. Seems like we had them to ourselves forever. |
| Review of Cat Power is forthcoming, I hope? If you'll note, in my message are the 2 letters, 'n' and 'm.' These stand for 'no message.' I hope you'll find this information useful. | Finch Platte Mar 1, 2003 6:34 AM | | nm |
| Cheap Trick! Supergrass! | PwrPopGuy Mar 1, 2003 6:47 AM | | All the rest blow ass! (Not really, just wanted to write you a little poem :-) But seriously, go see Cheap Trick for me. They're rockin' dudes from <i>way</i> back. They're the world's most under-appreciated rock band, IMO. They're tight: Rick Nielsen is a hell of lead guitarist and on-stage clown, Tom Peterson is a dang fine bassist, Bun E. can still smoke his drums just like on the Budokan album, and Robin Zander's voice is incredible after all these years.
I've never seen Supergrass live but I like their music so if they were coming to my town, I'd sure go.

| Thanks all youze guys! | Snowbunny Mar 1, 2003 6:29 PM | | I'll let you know how I scored when I get back Monday night. Looks like I'll have see Polyphonic Spree. I'll pick up a disk to familiarize myself while I'm down there.
Sorry, Poopsie, Supergrass didn't quite hit me right, and I'll have to pass on Cheap Trick since its on a Sunday night.
entee finchee... happy now? ;-) |

| I ain't no monkey but I know what I like | Davey Mar 1, 2003 11:12 PM | | Hey, Honeybaby, I just ordered some CDs myself a few days ago. I had this gift certificate sitting in my email box since about Christmas time so took a trip over to mymusic and got the new Cat Power, Calexico, Hot Hot Heat and another by a band called Tracker, titled simply Polk. That last one is supposed to be very good and a little like Califone/Giant Sand so should hold me over until I'm able to pick up the new Califone album, Quicksand/Cradlesnakes, which comes out in a few weeks. That's one I'm kinda looking forward to.
Here's a description of the Tracker album from Allegro Musicc but it's probably internet only since I couldn't find it locally ...
The second release from Tracker, Polk is a cinematic collection of instrumentals and pop-up folk rockers. Spacious, noir-esque and ambient, Polk combines desolate songs and instrumentals with warm, full studio recordings. Polk creates the music for a soundtrack that could be entitled "following the journeys of one man alone in a car as he drives down a deserted road." This is headphone-core for the analog: the driver passes through various small cities and enjoys plenty of open road. The project of songwriter and recording man John Askew, Tracker also brings in drummer Michael Schorr (Death Cab For Cutie) to create recording snapshots of patient, mid-tempo wanderings. Polk could be found on the same deserted highway as Camper Van Beethoven, Flaming Lips, Papa M and Giant Sand. But Tracker is driving.
"Tracker's debut introduces a band confidently treading the ground between country rock and indie rock... they offer a fresh sound, hinting at an interesting hybrid of Neil Young and Mercury Rev. The song arrangements reach a sophisticated, cinematic level... and the mellow atmosphere lingers pleasantly after the album stops playing." - Joshua Leeman, Magnet
"Lo-fi at times, rich and full at others, Tracker could share the soundtrack to this particularly beautiful stretch of desert road with Kind Of Like Spitting and Bright Eyes' less melodramatic efforts." - Donovan Pierce, DIW Magazine |
| BTW, nice 5 star review of the upcoming Califone album | Davey Mar 2, 2003 5:31 PM | | http://www.americana-uk.com/html/february_03.html
Califone Quicksand/Cradlesnakes (Perishable/Thrill Jockey 2003) Available: 18th March 2003 <img src=http://www.americana-uk.com/assets/images/5stars.gif>
Ripped bleeding from pop, country, avant-noise, art-rock and plain old folk music, Quicksand/Cradlesnakes reinforces Califones position as the premier left of centre noise-niks with tunes, anywhere in the world. Its their first to be licensed to Thrill Jockey, and comes not so long after the excellent news of Fruitbats signing to Subpop; whilst the endless comparisons aggravate Johnson and Rutili equally, they do come from some of the same places musically speaking, albeit Fruitbats being more pastoral of these cousins. More pertinently perhaps, for Modest Mouse / Ugly Casanova lovers, Rutili firmly eclipses Issac Brocks startling talent, whilst veering even further from sanity. The key to the success of the whole project is an innate ability of knowing when to lay glittering melodies before the listener, and when to when to make a rhythmic but somewhat atonal statement of alienation from what has come before. There are segments on the fantastically titled Horoscopic Amputation Honey which recall the most precious moments of country-blues tinged 70s American rock- real nuggets of pop heaven interspersed with feedback, fuzz and a mean lead guitar figure carefully picked out with clarity and space. Michigan Girls opens with an acoustic guitar, an elegant, restrained, folky vocal and a cello casting a calmness and spare beauty over proceedings; every now and again, theres a Massarella-inspired percussive breakdown before the chiming momentum is restored. Cat Eats Coyote is a lunatic abstract workout which sounds like a nightmare from Rennie Sparks and Susan Youngs combined sub-conscious, their dreams interrupted by Sam Coombes sax player Stanley Zappa. And Golden Ass is a really neat pysch-blues indie rocker. Quicksand/ Cradlesnakes is a big step up- a cracking sophomore effort which combines increased accessibility with just the right amount of abstract weirdness; unlike some avant-rockers, Califone have a firm rooting in folk music, and never even hint at progressive rock, which is an enormous relief. Ugly Casnanove and Fruitbats fans should definitely apply, and so should anyone with an interest in intelligent, expressive American pop music with guts, melody and a deviant, wandering spirit. MP |
