| Speaker demo comp | jeskibuff Mar 2, 2003 9:50 AM | | A couple of months ago, I put together a set of the Ed Frias DIY speakers for someone else. I put together a demo disc of music that I either liked to crank up (because I loved the way it sounded) or thought had some particular merit for demo-ing speakers. The result is a mish-mash of rock, folk, big band, classical, etc., but I think it's arranged to form a reasonably listenable disc.
Here is the track list. Let me know if you're interested in a copy. JE-Ski-Buff@Juno.Com

| How were the Frias speeks? | RPM Mar 2, 2003 1:27 PM | | Are you talking about those +/-$300 bookshelf models? I was very curious about those when he first mentioned them. I assume you got to audition them. What did you think? Any comparisons to existing brands/models?

| I wouldn't recommend them to ANYONE... | jeskibuff Mar 2, 2003 3:51 PM | | ...if my sole source of income was peddling speakers selling for 3 to 4 times their price! I couldn't make a living! I did A/B comparisons to my Dynaudio Contour 3.3s (floorstanders) and Snell K-IIIs (bookshelves) and the DIYs were VERY impressive. They clearly beat the Snells in many areas, especially in bass response. The Dynaudios were a harder reach for them, especially in bass and soundstage, but the price difference is huge! The ONLY downside is the cabinet (from SpeakerCity). While it has a decent finish, it is kind of squatty looking, with sharp edges that kind of make it look like a box covered with shelf paper. But hey, for about $330-$350 per pair, they're hard to beat! |
| Whew, I thought you were serious... | RPM Mar 3, 2003 9:59 AM | | Looks (from the reviews) like Mr. Frias knows his stuff. Every review of his speaker line (in the Audioreview.com reviews section) received 5 stars, pretty impressive.
I always enjoyed reading Ed's comments in the speaker discussions section (back when I frequented that section), and he always came across as knowledgable, freindly, and modest.
P.S.: Hey Jeff, would you mind sending me a copy of that comp you listed in another thread (the comp with "Walk Away Renee" on it)? Let me know if yo uneed my address.
thanks,

| Tricked ya! | jeskibuff Mar 3, 2003 11:02 AM | | I figured that lead line would shock people. Yes, Mr. Frias is one of those unsung heroes for making his design public and offering so much free help and advice to DIY-ers. I certainly hope it is beneficial to him by bringing him business on his for-profit enterprises.
To answer someone else's question (3Lockbox?), no, I am not a DIY speaker hobbyist. I initially was curious about the PartsExpress/Dayton DIY kit and put up an auction on eBay to build a pair at cost just so I could check them out and possibly recommend them to friends that were looking for bargain-basement quality sound. No one was interested in "buying" that auction at the reserve price (my cost + shipping) I set, but one person that inquired about it needed something to replace his fried ADS speaker with. After some email discussion, I agreed to build him a pair of the Frias speakers. I got to check them out and he got the finished product. It cost me a little time and effort (and the cost of a few new tools), but not a whole lot.
I should be able to burn a copy of that comp for you tonight. I made the mistake of not burning an image to my hard drive after I made some slight volume adjustments, but it's a relatively painless albeit tedious process to pop in the source CDs as Nero requests them. I just wish it were a little smarter so it could get all the tracks necessary off one CD instead of requesting the same CD multiple times.
I listened a little more to your Supertramp comp yesterday. I don't envy you turntable comp-makers for the trouble you go through to assemble your discs. Between cleaning the LPs and cueing the cuts, that's a lot of work! The digital method is MUCH easier! That said, I must say that the noise (pop/click) level is VERY low on some of those tracks. I never was able to achieve anything near that with my Discwasher set, which is one of many reasons I no longer bother with vinyl. The cuts didn't sound terribly compressed, either. I'll have to take a little time to A/B some of the cuts with my corresponding Supertramp discs. I've yet to A/B the Sting MSFL discs to my normal discs, too. |
| Can someone email me RPM's mailing address? | jeskibuff Mar 11, 2003 5:33 AM | | I thought I had it handy, but I don't. I emailed him yesterday for it, but he must be out-of-town or "indisposed". Please send it to JE-Ski-Buff@juno.com.
The "Speaker demo" comps that were requested will be sent out today. |
| I'm disposed. ;-) | RPM Mar 11, 2003 9:01 AM | | I read your e-mail from my Web-mail account, but haven't had a chance to reply from my home PC yet. I'll get my addy to you ASAP.

| Got it...thanks! | jeskibuff Mar 11, 2003 11:19 AM | | ...and the CD is now on its way to you. Just in time, too...my email account went "down for maintenance" for the next couple of hours, according to Juno. |
| Thumbs up on the Spyro Gyra and Buckingham | 3-LockBox Mar 3, 2003 8:36 AM | | In fact, I put that Spyro Gyra track on my Razz4 comp. And that Lindsey Buckingham CD is one of my favorites.
Are you a DIY speaker buff? |
| Which Spyro Gyra track? | jeskibuff Mar 11, 2003 6:17 AM | | There were 2 I put on there. I'm assuming "Nu Sungo" - that's one great tune, especially cranked up! Plus, I did a search to try to find a track list on Razz4, but had no luck. |
| If I'm not too late...... | HYFI Mar 3, 2003 4:48 PM | | Danny Wright did the show at last years WinterFestival here. I missed it but heard he was real good. Some other good test tracks here too.
Hope I catch you before you seal the package. Thanks. |
| Sorry...you snooze... | jeskibuff Mar 3, 2003 4:54 PM | | ...you get rested! What did you think I was going to say?
Nope, I mailed a package out to you this morning, but I have more envelopes available! Besides, it'll take me a couple days (perhaps the weekend) before I get this one burnt for you. Danny's pretty good. Phantasys is the best of 3 albums I have of his. Very tranquil music...similar to George Winston's December if you're familiar with that. One cut of his will only give you a little taste. |
| Whenever | HYFI Mar 3, 2003 6:13 PM | | Thanks no hurry. I was just burning your new Smooth Jazz Pizazz. I'm still going to try and fool with a few tracks on the Mrs disk before I burn them. |
| Truman Show | Masonjar Mar 11, 2003 11:42 AM | | 4 3:51 The Truman Show - Anthem - Part 2

is this the same bit by Philip Glass that is originally from Powaqquatsi? I know it's been used in other movies too.. great stuff.
I love the Holst Suite too, I've played both of his suites several times back when I was in band.. lots of fun!
I think I'll hit ya up for one of these.. I'll send an email.
