| Willy DeVille/Mick Jagger meeting | cc Mar 2, 2003 11:05 AM | | Someone posted this bit from the liner notes of a new Mink DeVille rerelease on a Rolling Stones board, written by Willy. I thought the many ;-) Mink DeVille fans here would enjoy it. I like how understated DeVille's writing is, considering how jazzed he must be by the memory. The story also involves legendary producer Jack Nitzsche.
"It was late in the recording of the first album, after tracking was complete in New York and the project had moved to the Capitol Studios in Hollywood for vocals and sweetening. We'd gone to a smaller studio on Larabee just off Santa Monica boulevard for some nips and tucks, when Mick Jagger stopped by to visit Jack Nitzsche one night. Jack had assisted on several Stones sessions, and it was his collaboration with Jagger on "Memo From Turner" that had made me connect him with Mink DeVille in the first place. Jack put on a reel to show off his present work. Jagger listened to a couple of songs with polite disinterest, nodding approvingly to "Cadillac Walk". But when "Mixed Up Shook Up Girl" came rolling out of the playback monitors, Jagger was immediately out of his seat and moving to its bittersweet, mid-tempo rhythms. He danced with a grace one seldom sees in his herky-jerky stage performances, enveloped in the music and oblivious to the rest of us in the room. Here was Mick Jagger, dancing by himself in a darkened studio while Mink DeVille played "Mixed up Shook Up Girl." |

Always thought that song was just about as perfect as they got and Willy DeVille came up with a few others nearly as good too. Kinda inconsistent overall, but that was one of the albums that I look back on with maybe 10 others that defined the 70s for me <img src=http://www.cmj.com/ubb/smile.gif>
Happy Birthday to my buddy RPM |
| What a great story...and detailed writing | Audio Girl Mar 2, 2003 5:56 PM | | Thanks, cc. I'll have to search out Mink DeVille's rerelease. I don't recall the song but now you've peaked my interest. |
