| What band is going to make a major splash this year, in your view? | PwrPopGuy Mar 3, 2003 11:18 AM | | A somewhat slight variation of Davey's thread below, but what one band (or artist) you're enthralled with at the moment or discovered in the past few months that you think deserve much greater recognition than they've currently getting? In other words, THE band (or artist) that you feel may be going great places this year, or at least ending up in major rotation in a whole lotta folks' CD players? One that comes to mind for me is IZZ but they're neo-prog so that pretty much limits them going too far on a mass scale. Try to name just one, if you can. |
| hard to say... | Dave_G Mar 3, 2003 11:25 AM | | but it will have to be something fairly accessable I would guess.
IZZ? I don't think so.
Maybe Porcupine Tree but I doubt it.
Of course if the new Pink Floyd comes out this year then that will take the cake.

| I'm gonna be heavily promoting Califone this year :-) | Davey Mar 3, 2003 11:55 AM | | Of course that means diddly squat in the grand scheme of things but if we restrict the scene to our little neck of the woods, it might happen :-)
I'm already surprised at how much attention Cat Power is getting both here and in the ezines. Just wait until the major label debut of the White Stripes next month. That's probably the one around here that will get some heavy attention. Might even chart too right up there next to Norah Jones and Avril Lasagna with the big media push that will surely be behind it and all the buzz leftover from the last album. And followed closely by the new Yo La Tengo album, another Rave Recs fave band. And the last Idlewild album is finally getting a release in the US after a big showing in the UK with a number of hot singles. And the final Beulah album comes out sometime this year, sure to be a big Rave Recs favorite. And the new Bjork. And the new Radiohead will surely generate a lot of talk, but they've already made a bunch of big splashes.
Yeah, I'll stick with Califone :-) |
| You beat me to it, Cute Face! | Audio Girl Mar 3, 2003 7:12 PM | | I was gonna say the White Stripes "Elephant" release which will include CD & LP availability. Here's the tracklist in case you might be interested, Spencer:
1. Seven Nation Army
2. Black math
3. There's no home for you here
4. I just don't know what to do with myself
5. In the cold cold night
6. I want to be the boy
7. You've got her in your pocket
8. Ball and biscuit
9. Hardest button to button
10. Little acorns
11. Hypnotise
12. Air near my fingers
13. Girl you have no faith in medicine
14. It's true that we love each other
Not that this tells us much, but I sense that you like words too. Now, if I could just find out where to pre-order the vinyl :-)
Tell me more about the new YLT release, if ya have some info. |
| Summer Sun with Yo La Tengo | Davey Mar 3, 2003 8:20 PM | | You know I don't let just anybody call me Spencer :-)
From the Yo la Tengo and Matador websites ....
Hi everybody. We're proud to announce our new album, Summer Sun, is all done, and will be made available for release by the good people at Matador April 8. It's got 13 songs on it, including a few we did live over Hanukkah, a cover of Big Star's "Take Care," and surprising cover artwork. The album's track listing is as follows :
Beach Party Tonight
Little Eyes
Nothing But You and Me
Season of the Shark
Today Is the Day
Tiny Birds
How to Make a Baby Elephant Float
Georgia Vs. Yo La Tengo
Don't Have to Be So Sad
Winter A-Go-Go
Moonrock Mambo
Let's Be Still
Take Care
The album was produced by longtime YLT associate Roger Moutenot at Nashville's Alex The Great and features guest appearances from Lambchop's Paul Niehaus, Roy Campbell Jr., Daniel Carter, Sabir Mateen, Katie Gentile (ex- Run On) and Tim Harris (Antietam) amongst others.
In other Yo La Tengo news, Georgia Hubley will be taking part in the U.S. premiere of David Thomas' rogue opera, "Mirror Man", happening at UCLA's Freud Playhouse on Saturday, February 22 (other performers featured will include David Thomas, Frank Black, Van Dyke Parks, Bob Holman and others). This is part of Pere Ubu's Disastodrome series of events that will also include the first Rocket From The Tombs performances in 27 years.
Following Yo La Tengo's SXSW appearance, the band will be jetting back to New Jersey to appear on Gaylord Fields' WFMU program, helping to raise funds for the station by performing covers for cash. The notion that WFMU has enough money to go around is a very nasty rumor (its that metal station at Seton Hall that has access to unlimited funds thanks to their pact with the devil) and even if it were true, it is easily worth $50 to hear Yo La Tengo performing Stacy Q's "Two Of Hearts" (hint, hint).
There are a handful of other YLT dates up in the tour dates section as well.
"Don't Have To Be So Sad", from the forthcoming 'Summer Sun', is available now for download (6.7MB) here. |
| Okay, Spencer, I'll never do it again... | Audio Girl Mar 3, 2003 9:14 PM | | by the way, I have a surprise for you...do I mail it to the previous address I have or send it by way of Kate. :-)
Seriously, I am mailing a few things to my RR friends this week -- you included -- but I am at a loss as to where to send yours. Just email me at mlcheist@hotmail.com or if it is inconvenient right now with the moving and all, I certainly understand.
Guess who's NOT coming to dinner,
Ag
PS: Snow happened to choose two of my favorite actors as a reference to your relationship. My stepmom introduced me to them when I was a wee little girl, and smiles still abound when I think about asking her, "Betty, what's the big deal about a black man coming for dinner?" I was only seven. My stepmom's response, "Nothing, absolutely nothing, wish the rest of the world understood that." I didn't have a clue what she meant then but I do now. |
| Thanks in advance | Davey Mar 4, 2003 8:31 AM | | You can still send it to Sunnyvale for the next week or so (or even after that as I'll still get it sometime, just not right away). But if it's gonna be more than a week or so it might be better to wait.
Nice story :-) |
| Depends on which body of water you're talking about... | tugmcmartin Mar 3, 2003 1:17 PM | | I think that one of my faves of the past year, Yonder Mountain String Band, will make a big splash this year in the jam band scene. They've been getting more and more hype in the ezines and hippie circles that i tend to run with (though i'm not a neo hippie myself). They've got a Grateful Dead/Phish/Widespread Panic type following already, but they only play certain markets. I hear that they'll be branching out some this year in terms of cities played. They've been invited to play Bonnaroo this year so that should give them a lot more exposure. Plus, with all the O Brother bluegrass revivalization in the past couple of years, more people are opening their ears to that type of music. Just look at the press and review created by Nickel Creek in the last year. Anyway, mark down YMSB for making a splash in the jamband pool.
