Questions for some of you Rave Reckers.Finch Platte

This is
i not
intended to garner 'pity clicks'! ;0)

I posted about a comp of mine a ways down the page, and it looks as though over 40 people checked out the post. But no one, with the exception of Swish, wanted a copy. Why is this?

Be honest, please- I can take it!

Because it's compiled of bands you've never heard of?
Because you've heard my comps and they suck?
Because it's not prog?
Because you already have enough music you haven't had time to listen to?
Because it's off CMJ and you already have the discs?
Is it too long? Too short? Too thin? Too shiny?

Thanks for any help.

but I would like a copy. I've been busy with other junk the past week or so but I was hoping it wasn't too late. So, what do ya think, can I still request one?

BTW, I don't get CMJ so it's alright by me. Thanks finchy!

I wanted to get advice on how to make a good comp.

Begging for this one
i still
won't get you one.

ok then, how about this ?(rubbing his chin)Jim Clark

It's got a ton of stuff I haven't heard and I'll be sure to review it and tell you exactly how bad it is.

If that doesn't do it I've got a lot of other angles left to pursue.

Uh, Jim? I don't seem to have your address.Finch Platte

You probably ditched the address when I didn't copy that Capt. Kidd pirate thingy thinking there was never going to be any helping me.

I'll email it off to you.

Sorry Finch, but other than the rare comp chrisnz advertised recently, I haven't requested any for a few months. I'm just kind of comped out right now, but that's just me. Maybe in a couple months .... :-)
It's the shiny factor (& not being available on black CDR)Audio Girl

Seriously, when I took inventory of comps I owe folks recently, I decided to refrain from asking for comps. Despite myself, I have given in on a few occasions. That's it...nada else.

I can't even send the finished comp that I worked on this weekend for funnybunny...seems the Pinot Grigio affected my skills at selecting effective tracks. After it was done, the only title that would have worked would have been "Music To Slash Yer Wrists By". :-(

I'm gonna make a run to BB or Staples tomorrow and see if I can find.

Oh, FP, I am not depressed...quite the contrary! I was just trying to find songs that I thought Snowbuns might like but I didn't do a good job of balancing the uptempo with the thought-provoking. ;-)
Don't bother AG, the prices will kill you. I just checked the Verbatim website...Swish

and saw this among the info listed;

Availability, Pricing
Backed by a lifetime warranty, the new 700MB, 80-minute Digital Vinyl CD-R media is initially available from October in single and multiple-disc packages at leading retailers, internet resellers and distributors across the country. Expected street prices for the new media are $1.49 for a single disc and $12.99 for a 10-pack.

I don't know about you, but I get my regular CD-Rs for about 50 cents each, including a slim case. Yes, these would be cool, but not for give-aways like we do with our comp trading.
Because of the coolness of the item, I just ordered a 10-pk from buy.comPwrPopGuy
Mar 4, 2003 8:26 AM
for $5.60. No, not a great deal but I figure I'll not use these for trades.
Hmmm. I'd buy 10 for that price. I have tons of empty cases, so...Swish
Mar 4, 2003 8:31 AM
that price is just over 50 cents each. Anyway, I'm not a miser by any menas, it's just that having something because it looks "cool" isn't usually enough to prod me into buying it. Thanks for the info.

> Because it's compiled of bands you've never heard of?

Yes, that has something to do with it. Not just "haven't heard of", but "don't even have a clue what it's like", neither as a comp., nor the individual artists.

But I don't think that's the main reason.

> Because you've heard my comps and they suck?

Definitely not the case. I rate you right up there with my favourite comp-makers Sy(d)bil and Demetrio.

> Because it's not prog or indie?

That does hurt your chances, but it's usually not a show-stopper.

> Because you already have enough music you haven't had time to listen to?

Yes, great big resounding yes, that's probably my biggest reason.

> Because it's off CMJ and you already have the discs?

Oh. Is it? I hadn't noticed. Yes, I do. Is it really?

> Is it too long? Too short? Too thin? Too shiny?

Not dimply enough.

My marketing side says "you need an angle."

Wait, no, he said you need an "angel", my mistake.

Two reasons you left off your listJDaniel
Mar 4, 2003 7:45 AM
1. You didn't put "new comp" or something along those lines in the topic line. I just saw something about Alaska, and decided to pass on reading. Now if I'd known a comp was involved, I'd have checked it out. Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't read every new post, but that was my reason.

2. The guilt factor - I've rec'd several comps from you, and have enjoyed them all (TT, Dregs etc.), but you've never asked for anything of mine or in return. Thus, I might possibly feel guilty about asking for another comp from you w/o anything in trade.

NAH, scratch #2.

JDaniel
That's why....Finch Platte

...I put the word 'Comp' in the post under the original.

And I don't worry about reciprocation. You're right to scratch it.

A serious answer as to my reasonsDarius
Mar 4, 2003 9:53 AM
I should mention before the rest of this that I haven' requested any comps in the past several months because of lack of time (and I get enough unrequested to enjoy those). So that's the real reason. But since you were looking for reasons, here's the reason that even if I were requesting some comps, I wouldn't have requested yours:

I looked at it and, other than Zwan, it did not contain any bands that I had heard enough things about to become interested in. (Well, I'd heard about the Johnny Marr album, but it was mostly negative reviews.) Since my musical taste is quite broad, it is often quite shallow (i.e. does not go very deep in any individual style), just because I have very limited listening time. So I do a lot of pre-screening before I buy an album or request a comp. I'm trying, in my very brief listening time, to find what I the music that I would like the most in various genres, and I've found that certain tools for me mean a greater chance of really liking the music that I purchase. A big tool, for bands that I've never heard, is reviews in magazines and on websites. And a pretty good review usually isn't enough -- unless something particular about a band intrigues me, I would usually have to have read something from someone that I trust gushing about the album. Ideally, I will have heard more than one person gushing, but sometimes one is enough. I don't have anywhere near the time to listen to all the albums that are "good" in the genres that I like, so "good" isn't enough; there has to be a good chance that it'll be much more than good (although I violate this rule with certain acts that I already know and like). I don't become interested in a particular band because someone says they sound a particular way, or are like a particular earlier band, or are in a particular style. (For example, I don't like early Metallica because it's speed metal; I like it because it's really really good. I would not buy some band's album because someone told me they sound a lot like early Metallica, or because they're speed metal, or anything like that.) I also don't purposely gravitate towards lesser known bands, or bands that I've never heard of. So I went down your band list and nothing was there (except for Zwan) that I had on my list of bands to check out, and one of the only bands on there (other than Zwan) that I had heard of (Johnny Marr's band) was one I had heard negative stuff about. Finally, because I haven't heard any of your comps previously, you are not one of the Rave Reccers whose comps I've so consistently enjoyed in the past that I would want to hear them even if I hadn't heard of any of the bands; these Rave Reccers are to me like trusted music critics, except they give "good reviews" to stuff by putting it on a comp, not by writing an article.

So I had no special reason to check this out in my limited time. That being said, I'm sure there's a good chance that if I requested your comp, I would like large portions of it. But that can be said about many comps on this board, and many albums that are available for me to purchase, and I don't have time to listen to more than a few of them.

I hope this was helpful. Also, you should have specified in the earlier post that it was a comp for trading.
