| Smells Like Teen Spirit | Jar Jun 11, 2003 7:48 AM | | best song of the last 25 years?
discuss..
I'll just say that it's hard for me to think of this as a truly great song considering that Kurt ripped off the Pixes and Boston in order to create it. Sure, there probably hasn't been a truly original song come out in the past 25 years, but this one is definately a case of right sound, right time. I'm not sure what my #1 would be, but I wouldn't pick 'Teen Spirit'
This thread inspired by VH1's silly "Top 100 songs of the past 25 years" which they just announced. What a load of horse$hit. Like I expect any better from those flakes.

| Just scanned that list..... | tentoze Jun 11, 2003 8:13 AM | | ...and had to run to the toilet. You're right, Jar- silly, but nauseating as well. As long as they don't make it mandatory, I'll do my part to stay away from 98% of that list. |
| maybe they should name their list something different? | RPM Jun 11, 2003 8:27 AM | | maybe they should call it "Most Popular Song" or "Favorite Songs for non-music geeks". Only a handful from the list made me cringe.
Btw, Jar, "Smells Like Teen Spririt" and Boston??? Wow, I never heard that connection. Will have to check it out sometime.

| re: Smells Like Teen Spirit | tugmcmartin Jun 11, 2003 8:34 AM | | If you're talking about some of the most popular songs, i could understand a lot of those on the list. But in terms of influential? Not many do much for me. There were 4 that i saw that made me go "yeah! now you're talking!". Jump, Rappers Delight, Super Freak, and Jack and Diane, the last more for the images it still conjures in my head (just a great piece of songwriting that lets you visualize what's going on). How the hell did MmmBop sneak in there?!?!?!?! One glaring omission that i saw was no "The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby. If you're putting "Fast Car" on there for its political statement, how can The Way It Is be left off. Especially when MmmBop is on there! Anyway, thats my 2 cents worth. |
| re: Smells Like Teen Spirit | Darius Jun 11, 2003 8:56 AM | | Oh My Gosh. Popular songs! R&B Songs! Dance-Pop songs! Songs made by women and black people and teenagers! No My Bloody Valentine or Sunny Day Real Estate. This is truly an abomination.
Actually, I think it's a pretty diverse list that is refreshingly non-pretentious. Of course you know me well enough to know that it's completely not the list I would do, but I appreciate its populism (something that I always try to push on this board), and I only see a few songs on there that I both know and don't like. RPM is right that it's really an (utterly subjective, sometimes misguided) list of "best really popular songs", not "best songs". |
| "Greatest Songs" | Jar Jun 11, 2003 9:33 AM | | I guess we could argue all night about the meaning of the term "Greatest Songs"
?-)

| I never liked these kinds of lists. | DarrenH Jun 11, 2003 9:39 AM | | Although I don't mind looking them over. I get a chuckle out of it. Anyway, these lists are far to subjective. I wonder how VH1 collects their data. A panel of bean counters looking through sales figures?
I remember when 'Teen Spirit' came out. It sure made a big splash in the music world. Like Mason said, "a case of right sound, right time". Does it deserve to be #1, not with me although I think it kicks butt.
I couldn't even begin to list my #1 song. There are far too many tunes that I like to give any particular one the top spot.
And no Neil Young in that list. Seems like "Rockin in the Free World" shoulda crept in there someplace. That was a hugely popular song. |
| Where do they get off... | Stone Jun 11, 2003 10:16 AM | | putting "Rapper's Delight" and "I Wanna Be Sedated" on that list? Those weren't huge megahits. We all know that popularity, and popularity alone, makes something "great."
I've been debating this list and what it really is, most of the morning with one of my co-workers. At the end of the day, as Jar (and probably others) said or alluded to, it depends on how one defines "great."
