| Where's everyone buying their SACD & DVD-A discs? | BillB Jun 13, 2003 9:49 AM | | Best Buy's selection is quite small and other record stores I've visited mix most SACDs in with regular CDs. Amazon's stores aren't logically laid out either. Any suggestions of where to go? I'll be picking up my Denon DVD-2900 this weekend.
Thanks,
Bill |
| pretty much only at Best Buy | Slosh Jun 13, 2003 9:59 AM | | Yeah, their selection is smallish but then so are SACD and DVD-A releases in general. If you like jazz and classical there probably are some good online stores but I'm not so I wouldn't know. |

| does the Mini-C come with an SACD player? | RPM Jun 13, 2003 10:19 AM | | Hey Bill, I thought of you yesterday when a Mini-Cooper drove by. It was one of those original Mini-C's the freaky-cool really mini versions, the one with wheel-barrel sized tires. Did you get yours yet?

| does the Mini-C come with an SACD player? | BillB Jun 13, 2003 12:42 PM | | Rick,
It does come with a half-decent stereo if you get the Harmon Kardon upgrade but I bailed on the car of my dreams all-together. After researching a few enthusiasts forums it seems that they still don't have all of the bugs worked out. The last thing I need is a brand new car that I have to take in for service once a month. Not to mention they won't lend you a MINI while your car's there and won't reimburse you for a rental. It's no wonder that they came in second to last in J.D. Powers & Associate's Initial Quality survey of owners.
I ended up going with a Subaru Impreza. Still a fun car to drive, just not as cool as a Cooper. Maybe one day when the quirks are ironed out o maybe one of the super-cool old-school MINIs as a restoration. We'll see.
I'll be stopping down at the Best Buy @ Concord Mall tomorrow to check out their SACD & DVD-A section. Hopefully it's better than the Springfield, PA store.

| WRX? | Slosh Jun 13, 2003 2:49 PM | | My brother has one. Fun car but I'm spoiled by V-8 torque so it's kind of a weird experience for me nailing the gas and waiting a bit for the boost to build up. Also kinda weird going from RWD with lots 'o wheelspin and the ass-end twitching to the left when I have my heavy shoes on, to no wheelspin at all thanks to AWD. There's now a three hundred HP version but I'd insist they leave off that stupid ass wing if I were to buy one.
My brother got smoked the other day buy a Neon SRT (I think that's what it's called). It's rated at 215 HP (vs. the WRX's 227) but really is closer to 240 (gotta love those under rated specs...just like the Mopar of old ;-)). No AWD and limited-slip is a dealer installed item (stupid).
I only wish they would make a two-door WRX. |
| WRX? | BillB Jun 13, 2003 3:32 PM | | Nah, I went for the 2.5RS due to $$$. It's actually got more low-end torque than the WRX but once that boost builds I'd be toast. The Neons are supposed to be decent performers but a lot of it is due to the driver (no offense to your bro.)
The STi 300HP version is a beautiful thing. It and Mitsubishi's Lancer are the closest thing you can buy to an actual rally car. The wing is actually functional on the STi, as is the hood scoop.
Some may look at the AWD system as a liability but when it comes to the twisties or poor road conditions, the Impreza line will outperform almost any other pocket rocket out there! Subaru's got THE BEST AWD system available.
If you'd like a 2-dr, take a look at the pre-2002 Impreza 2.5RS. It was the top-of-the-line before the WRX came to these shores and is a two-seater. It's the car I fell in love with after seeing WRC on Speed back in the day.
Cheers!

| I've been thinking of getting a Mustang Mach I | Slosh Jun 13, 2003 4:02 PM | | But I hate those gaudy sixties-esque "racing" stripes. It's basically a '97-'98 spec Cobra with a shaker hood. My ole man had a '97 Cobra and it was a blast to drive; kinda like a BMW V-8 stuffed in a Mustang (in that the engine was refined but that's about it :-)). Unfortunately, when he sold it I wasn't in a postion to buy it :-(
Besides, I live on a hill in PA and really could use AWD in the winter. I'll probably get a used WRX in a few years (assuming I can find one that hasn't been throgged). Kinda hard for me to spend $25k when I know in a few years I can find a used one with less than 30k miles for ten thousand less. Of course, I already have a good vehicle and have the luxury of not needing a new car anytime soon :-)

| I love car talk | Troy Jun 13, 2003 3:46 PM | | My Suby Forester, the "Up Chuck Wagon", has made me a believer in AWD. The thing is basically a tall (ie ugly) Impreza. Nice vehicle, but it doesn't seem to be standing up to the "Troy Treatment" though. Excessive brake and clutch wear at 60k. My repair guy asked me "Are you letting your teenage son drive this thing?". Yeah, like I have kids.
So, Bill, don't let your "Inner Unser" get the best of you.
That no wheelspin issue that you speak of is terriffic. Who want's wheelspin? Try a twisty mountain road in the wet at double the posted speed in an AWD car and you will see the light, o my brother.
My wife wanted a Mini until we drove it. It's just too damn small in a world filled with Excursions and Avalanches. Goes like stink and handles like a slot car, but I constantly felt like I was gonna die. Didn't know about the quality issues . . . that really blows. Inexcusable in a world where cars cost so much and you have quality benchmarks like Honda and Toyota to measure against. Glad she went with the Beetle Turbo instead.
That Neon may be a goer, but see if the doorhandles and mirrors are still attached after 60k. MOPAR is still junk. Too bad, cuz most of their product line looks pretty sharp. I especially like that new boat-tial "Crossfire", but I'm a sucker for the '72 Riviera and Rambler Marlin too . . . |
| AWD is great, don't get me wrong... | Slosh Jun 13, 2003 4:19 PM | | ...but you have to admit RWD is more fun (with enough torque and driver skill on tap).
I used to be into muscle cars (had a '70 Challenger R/T with a 440 Magnum) but it got too expensive, and then the original (ie: R/T, SS, 442, GS, GTO, etc. - not the pedestrian cars they were based on) became too valuable to daily drive.
I'll be the first to say modern cars are better in every way, but the old Detroit iron still occupies a special place for me (even though I'm only 35).
I'm just hoping Dodge or Chysler puts that new 345 HP 5.7 litre Hemi in a two-door $30k car soon.
Maybe I'll have to buy another truck. Maybe the Ram with the full-blown 500 HP Viper V-10? Perhaps they'll put the new Hemi in the next Dakota R/T :-) |
| I'm just a control freak | Troy Jun 13, 2003 5:27 PM | | Car control anyway. I don't want parts of the car stepping out on me when I need them most. I'm a handling oriented guy long before straightline speed, so AWD is the thing for me. After all those years with light in the rear pick-ups with no traction and overpowered front wheel drive cars with horrible wheelhop and torque steer, I'm sold for good now.
I'd much rather pay for AWD than pay for frivolous junk like navigation screens and DVD players. It should be in every car like ABS and airbags are now.
500 HP pick up? Have fun buying tires every 6 months! My old boss had one of those Ford Lightnings and the leadfoot went through tires like Kleenex. |
| I love car talk | BillB Jun 13, 2003 4:55 PM | | That'd be the inner Solberg, Petter that is! |
| WRC . . . | Troy Jun 13, 2003 5:29 PM | | . . . is my new favorite form of motorsports. As a guy that rolled his first car hustling through the woods on a gravel road, I can SO relate to the attraction. |
| You guys mind if we talk some music here?! | RPM Jun 13, 2003 5:24 PM | | Bill,
Any idea what time you're gonna be at BB? I have a soccer game to attend in the AM, and my folks are coming later on, but if you're gonna be there in between...
I saw Best Buys SACD & DVD-A section recently, it's somewhere in between big and small (maybe 20-30 titles?).

| You guys mind if we talk some music here?! | BillB Jun 13, 2003 5:42 PM | | Rick,
I'll likely be there around 3-4. I think my wife and I are going to swing by The Olive Garden afterwards for a bite to eat.
I'll probably be the only one in the SACD / DVD-A section but may wander to the DVD or CD section, carrying LOTR's
4-DVD set.
