| o/t (sort of) - Yet another way to advertise on RR! | ForeverAutumn Jun 14, 2003 6:08 AM | | Anyone else been hit by this one yet?
It's not a pop-up. It doesn't float down and sit in the middle of your screen while you're trying to read something. It comes up
i instead
of a post.
I clicked on Swish's post below and instead of getting his post, I got a totally differing screen, advertising something or other (I didn't read it). In order to get rid of it I had to click on either "view later" or "skip". Once I hit "skip" I was able to view Swish's post.
If we have to put up with these ads, I prefer this one to the floaty thing. That one just really annoys me. I recognize the ads as a necessary evil and I don't mind them so much as long as they're quick and easy to get rid of. |
| Woah. | Finch Platte Jun 14, 2003 6:21 AM | | That happened to me here last night and I thought I had clicked on a 'bad' spot.
Uh, that's kind of scary. I don't like it.

| It's okay. Don't be frightened. | ForeverAutumn Jun 14, 2003 6:27 AM | | It just happened to me again. The frequency could get annoying! |
| With the traffic here being so light... | Slosh Jun 14, 2003 6:50 AM | | ...you would think they would make the ads a bit less obtrusive and the site more user-friendly in an attempt to attract new users. Besides that very annoying ad you speak of, I had to wade through three goddamn pop ups just to read this post!
I know this site is a business and they need advertising to survive, but can't they just keep all of the ads on the left side of the screen? I can live with that. |
| Me too | allears Jun 14, 2003 11:42 AM | | Some "Commflash" company. I really hate this deceptive form of advertising, much more than a pop-up. The thing is, I go to a post I want to read and instead I'm directed to an ad? Using your moniker to lure to me view this crap? WTF? The oversight people here have now lost any credibiltiy, in my mind.
I deleted my pop-up killer a few days ago because of crashes, but does a pop-up killer kill these or would I need a new form of protection?

| The one I'm using doesn't touch this new strategy...... | tentoze Jun 15, 2003 5:41 PM | | which apparently isn't a "pop-up" but like a redirect to a separately set-up webpage. I'm no expert, but I know obnoxious, insidious advertising when it's foisted on me. It sux. |
| I never get pop-ups | JDaniel Jun 16, 2003 5:12 AM | | and have only one time gotten one of those types that float down the middle of the screen.
I use the free-ware "Pop-Up-Stopper" at work and at home. So far so good for me.
Honestly - I haven't gotten a typical pop-up ad in over a year now. If you aren't using it, I recommend it. And it's free.

| Now that's strange | JDaniel Jun 16, 2003 5:33 AM | | No, not replying to my own message! I was just reading a post, then clicked on "return to message board", and got the following message:
"This page provides potentially unsafe info to an ActiveX control. Your current security settings prohibit running controls in this manner. As a result, this page may not display correctly. OK"
A - I haven't changed any java settings (or any other settings).
B - I've been coming to this site every day for years and I've never seen that message before.
Wonder if it's related to the new type of ads?
JDaniel - wishing I was someplace else this Monday morning (golfing, fishing, beachin' it, .......) |
| Now that's strange | ForeverAutumn Jun 16, 2003 6:57 PM | | I get that message at work all the time, on all kinds of sites. I've never gotten it at home. I just figured that it had something to do with the firewall on our network at work. They have very strict rules regarding what the Network will allow.
Have you installed a firewall recently? |
| This sucks like a Royal Dirt Devil | Mr MidFi Jun 16, 2003 6:24 AM | | Look, I didn't complain at all about the format change. I didn't complain about the pop-ups. I didn't even complain very much when trolls reduced the General board to rubble...I just left. In fact, I've never complained to AR about anything.
Now I'm complaining. Hijacking a thread with a redirect to an obnoxious full-screen ad is completely over the line. If any mods or admins are reading this, let it be known: This Is Unacceptable. |
| I disable active scripting.... | DarrenH Jun 16, 2003 7:03 AM | | before I even come to this site anymore. Turning off active java scripting does away with all of those nasty advertising pop-ups and full screen crap. And it greatly speeds up this web site too! I'm on dial-up at work and the difference is huge. At home I use a cable modem and it's not so bad.
I turn active scripting back on when I leave. It can be a hassle but this site has become a pain in the arse to navigate with active scripting enabled. I kept getting these damn page load errors and when it did decide to load it took forever. Disabling active scripting does away with all of that.
