| She said "There's no prettier site, than Baltimore at night" | Swish Jun 16, 2003 6:54 AM | | I just arrived in Baltimore this AM for a big convention, and I thought about this great old tune. So who will be first to guess who wrote and performed it? The first to correctly answer will get one big "attaboy" or "attagirl" from Swishy. Let the contest begin. |
| re: She said "There's no prettier site, than Baltimore at night" | Darius Jun 16, 2003 8:18 AM | | Well, the song "Street of Baltimore" has the lyrics "She said the prettiest place on earth was Baltimore at night". Is that what you're talking about? I know that song from Gram Parsons' version, but I don't remember who wrote it. I believe Bobby Bare has a well-known version of that song, but I'm not sure if he was the original performer of it. I could research who wrote this on the web, I suppose, but that's my answer for now. |
| probably wrong, but I'll guess: Lyle Lovett? | RPM Jun 16, 2003 8:20 AM | | I know he does a "Baltimore" song, but I don't recall that specific line being in it, and it's not that old.

| Incorrect. He didn't write it, but it would be a good one for him... | Swish Jun 16, 2003 11:35 AM | | to record if he hasn't already done so. Did he? I'll have to check that out on the web. |
| Ballmer.com? | Finch Platte Jun 16, 2003 8:43 AM | | Oh, you meant 'sight.'
Hmmm. Great. That's gonna bug me all day.

| Streets Of Baltimore | J Jun 16, 2003 9:33 AM | | I too know the Gram Parsons version, but only that one; I am aware that Bobby Bare did it, but that's all. I took a look on AMG & came up with the writing credits, but I'm afraid it doesn't mean all that much to me. And the author & composer, from what I can tell, did not actually perform the song, so I guess there's no point in listing their names. But it does say that Charley Pride recorded the song in the 1960s, too. Great, GREAT tune.
You don't live far, so you probably know this, but Fell's Point rules. I have in-laws in suburban Baltimore and we always try to hit FP whenever we're down there. They don't understand the attraction (what are you going to do there?), but it's a mighty fine place to hang. |
| Tompall Glaser & the Glaser Brothers | Darius Jun 16, 2003 10:01 AM | | Here's what I found: http://www.purecountrymusic.com/news.ez?viewStory=337. Here is an excerpt from this description of a Glaser Brothers collection: "The first track is well worth singling out, as it clearly underscores the Glaser Brothers firm roots in traditional country music. Co-written by Tompall Glaser and Harlan Howard, Streets Of Baltimore is as fine a country song as there is. A heart-wrenching tale of a man losing his love to the lure of the big city, Tompalls vocal delivery, soulful and plaintiff, fits the songs story line perfectly." So I think Tompall and the Glaser Bros. did it first, and then Bobby Bare had a hit with it, which is probably what Gram was most familiar with. |
| "Attaboy" to Darius. Ain't the internet grand? | Swish Jun 16, 2003 11:33 AM | | It used to be a chore finding out who wrote and/or sang what before the web came to us. Anyway, I prefer the Gram Parsons version, and just listened to his "Anthology" yesterday, or at least disc #1 which contains that song. As I approached "Ballmer" this AM I immediately thought of the song. Nice job Darius. |
| Yes J, we plan to hit Fell's Point both nights. I love that area | Swish Jun 16, 2003 11:38 AM | | Lots of great clubs, food, and, of course, live music. Should be a fun time with our national convention in town. I'm at the Marriott in Inner Harbor, so the water taxi can drop us off at FP for a night of fun. |
