| Top 5 Surround (5.1) Music Discs (DTS, SACD, DVD-Audio)? | Digital-G Jun 16, 2003 1:27 PM | | Not in any order:
1. Billy Joel - The Stranger (SACD)
2. Steve Miller Band - Fly Like An Eagle (DTS, awesome)
3. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (DVD-Audio)
4. Paul McCartney & Wings - Venus & Mars (DTS)
5. REM - Automatic for the People(DVD-Audio, I think)
Anyone else? |
| I don't think I can even come up with five | Slosh Jun 16, 2003 1:50 PM | | Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon of course (SACD)
REM - Document (DVD-A)
Hmmm...most of my SACDs are stereo only and I prefer the stereo mix on all of my other DVD-A discs because, like DTS concert DVDs and DTS music CDs, the surround channels are way too agressively panned for my tastes. One of my favorite surround DVDs is Roger Waters - In The Flesh - Live but I never listen to the Dolby Digital track. I always play the 20-bit PCM track and let my pre/pro do the DSP thing. |
| If we're talking about the quality of the sound, and not | Swish Jun 16, 2003 3:37 PM | | necessarily the quality of the music, I would say my favorites are:
Sol to Soul by Freddie Ravel (DTS)- this is basically "latin jazz" with a mix of instrumental and vocal numbers. This may be the finest recording I've ever heard in any format.
Diana Krall - Love Scenes - (DTS)
I can't think of any others. Maybe the Alan Parsons DTS release (the name escapes me and I'm not at home!) |

Bjork vespertine (dvd A)
Yes Magnification (dvd A)
Pink floyd DSOTM (SACD).
Yes fragile (dvd A). |
| I got 2 for you... | Mr MidFi Jun 17, 2003 7:11 AM | | Steely Dan - Gaucho (DTS)
Sting - Nothing Like the Sun (DTS)
Many would say these are too aggressively separated in 5.1 format, and I would probably agree. But they're a great way to show off the surround capabilities of your system. The Dan disc is very agressive in its 5.1 mix, more so than the Sting. Both use fabulous source recordings.
On DVDs, I like the Roger Waters disc. The DTS mix on the new Zeppelin DVD release is much better than expected, BTW. |
| re: Top 5 Surround (5.1) Music Discs (DTS, SACD, DVD-Audio)? | Digital-G Jun 17, 2003 11:32 AM | | Thanks for the posts. I figured that coming up with 5 for this category would be challenging, so thanks for the input. I feel that these mixes (esp. of older recordings) breath new life into them (tho some are a bit too aggressively mixed).
Speaking of which, if your a Beatles fan be sure to check out the new DVD anthology. Much of it (if not all) has been remixed into 5.1. It's a fab :) listening experience and not too over-the-top. Highlights (for me at least) are the Shea Stadium footage and promo videos. |

Donald Fagen - The Nightfly, great re-mastering job (then again everything he does is great IMO)
Steely Dan - Two Against Nature (I would say this one is not too aggressively separated, track 8 is fabulous)
Paul Simon - You're the One like Graceland it was recorded very well |
