| Notable stuff on May 2003 CMJ sampler: (N. Jones/Satrlight Mints/Andrew Bird/Decemberists) | RPM Jun 19, 2003 8:51 AM | | I got to hear May's CMJ sampler which had several artists that may be of interest to the RR crew:
track 2: Norah Jones "Bessie Smith" (a fairly generic live number by Ms. Jones)
track 4: Satrlight Mints "Brass Digger" (isn't this the band Troy recently touted? It's surely his style: upbeat and eclectic, with quirky lyrics. Reminded me a bit of both XTC and Stephen Malkmus)
track 16: Andrew Bird "Lull" (Really nice tune, on the mellow side, and very melodic. I read on AMG.com that this album is just as good as "The Swimming Hour" which I liked a lot. I'm probably going to order "Weather Systems", but I'm wondering if anyone else has it, or has heard it.
track 17: The Decemberists "I Dreamt I was an Architect" (An interesting vocal based tune which I liked OK, but not to the level of wanting to run out and buy the disc. A possible grower though) |
| I have the Andrew Bird | Stone Jun 19, 2003 10:08 AM | | I've only spun it once and it sounded nice, but didn't really strike me as outstanding (but most don't on first listen). I'll try to listen to it more this weekend and report back.

| Is this a rock/pop album? (nt) | Slosh Jun 21, 2003 12:14 PM | | |
| well, yeah... | Stone Jun 22, 2003 7:19 PM | | It's not a jazz album, if that's what you're getting at. It's heavy on the violin (but not overdone). I think it probably falls into the illustrious Americana category. It's similar to The Swimming Hour, but this one has less of the early jazz, etc. influences and is stripped down somewhat instrumentally in comparison. It doesn't strike me as being quite as melodic either. Weather Systems reminds me a lot of the Pinetop Seven, if you've heard them. So far I don't like it as much as The Swimming Hour but it's still good stuff.

| Yeah, that was me | Troy Jun 19, 2003 6:07 PM | | Good (but not the best) track from a great album. Lots of color and style to be found on that disc. Yep, it's got me written all over it. |
