| Has anybody noticed | JDaniel Jun 19, 2003 11:51 AM | | the SEVERE lack of traffic around here this week? Even with our Tuesday Rotation thread, this page includes posts all the way back to last Thursday, June 12th. A week's worth of posts/replies on ONE page.
Hello (hello, hello), is there anybody in there. Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone at home?

| Yeah... i've noticed that too... | tugmcmartin Jun 19, 2003 12:14 PM | | But i'm here now, after shooting the worst round of golf i've hit in over a decade. |

| I'm Quietly Here | BarryL Jun 19, 2003 12:29 PM | | I'm checkin' in, but not much had grabbed my attention. I've been too busy to spend much time writing. And it's heading into vacation season.
Maybe more chat about the music and less about trading would be a good thing for this board.
Of course, that is what the Tuesday thread is about, so that doesn't explain the lack of participation there. |
| I hear ya ((hear ya)) (((hear ya))) | tugmcmartin Jun 19, 2003 12:56 PM | | Been an awful lot of trading talk lately and that gets pretty boring. Trades are cool and all, but the thing that pulled me in here to start with was reading about all of the sh!tty music everyone else is listening to, and there hasn't been much of that. I also think that BS that took place a few weeks ago inre insults, etc put a lot of people off of this place for a while. Too bad.
Anyway, as for musical discussion, I have to say that I loaded a couple of Jar's reggae samplers and a few of Chip's Blues series into the CD changer of my car and i'm totally blown away by reggae stuff. Lots of great tunes on there that i'd never heard and many that i never realized were reggae. Is "Stop That Train" by Bob Marley an original? The only time i've heard it is as done by the Jerry Garcia Band. Yeah, i do live a sheltered life :-). And the Blues series... wow, what a great opus of work from Chip.
As an aside and even more rave recording related, i plan on checking out the new Train effort. I'm not hot on the new single, but i hear its a pretty solid album. |
| Stop That Train | Jar Jun 19, 2003 1:48 PM | | There's two songs that have similar titles:
"Stop the Train" and "Stop that Train"
I think the one you are refering to is the crappy sounding early recording (sorry about that, couldn't find a better version without buying some box set) by Bob Marley & The Wailers, with Peter Tosh on lead vocals. ("..Stop the train, I'm leaving, it won't be too long, whether I'm right or wrong..") Eventually, Peter Tosh left the Wailers and went solo ("Legalize It" and "Stepping Razor" represent his solo stuff)..
The other one is "Stop That Train".. originally it appeared on the THE HARDER THEY COME soundtrack (this is a must-have reggae collection if you see it cheap) by Scotty called "Draw Your Brakes" ("..Stop that train, I wanna get on, my baby she is leaving me now..") - later it was recorded by Eastwood & Saint and they called it "Stop That Train" which is on one of the comps.
Any recordings out there with the Dead version you're refering to? Sounds cool..

| I'm leaving... | tugmcmartin Jun 19, 2003 2:03 PM | | The one i was referring to was the Marley/Tosh collaboration. There's a prety cool, bluesy version of that done by the Jerry Garcia Band on one of their live albums (maybe the only one). Its a two disc set with some great tunes on there. Lots of covers, but they do them soooo well. BTW... Yonder Mtn. String Band works a cover of Legalize It into one of their jams on their first live album. Was a pretty cool little snippet of it too. I'll see if i can't get those cover versions to you sometime. Thanks for the info... |
| "Draw you brakes, bruddah" | Ex-Lion Tamer Jun 20, 2003 6:03 AM | | Love that Scotty tune. |
| but, but.... | Stone Jun 21, 2003 7:32 AM | | "Stop the Train" is on one of the greatest reggae albums of all time (IMO), Catch a Fire.
"Stop that Train" is a classic tune too, and was sampled by the Beastie Boys in one of their songs.

| clarification | Stone Jun 22, 2003 7:03 PM | | The Tosh song that was performed by Bob Marley and the Wailers was actually called "Stop That Train" on Catch a Fire. The early, more raw, recordings of that song were under the title "Stop The Train."
The Scotty song with the lyrics stop that train, I wanna get on... is actually called "Draw Your Brakes" as people have alluded to. This was the tune sampled by the B-Boys.

| Not enought variety. | Finch Platte Jun 19, 2003 12:50 PM | | Sure, there's a lot of music out there, but I wish this place were a little more varied (like the 'Passion' section of the mountain bike site.) There, subjects can veer off in alomost any direction and not too many people get bent about it.
Plus, I haven't found that many people here who share my tastes in music. Not that variety ain't the spice of life, but I like sharing music, and I've been coming up a bit dry lately.
Just my .02, .03 Can.

| yep, yep, yep.... | tugmcmartin Jun 19, 2003 1:01 PM | | I get that feeling too. I think there are maybe three people in here that have liked what i've sent them on a semi-regular basis. At least they say that they do, but who can really tell, right? And the comps i receive from other folks rarely hit a note with me. There are certainly exceptions, but they're rare.
I also would like to see a little more variety in discussions as well. With all the nonsense going on in some of the other forums, it'd be nice to be able to post other topics more often and not feel like yer p!ss!ing people off. |
| I think everyone is waiting to receive my mystery disc | RPM Jun 19, 2003 12:55 PM | | Which should be happnin' soon. Keep an eye on the mailboxes next week.
Finch, you want variety? I'll give you some variety pal!

| Ebb and Flow | Troy Jun 19, 2003 1:34 PM | | I've been posting here since the late 90s and have seen monster ebbs and flows. It's in an ebb at the moment, but it will flow again.
As previously mentioned, the stupid YECH/insult/whinefest that happend last month really scared off a lot of posters. I've seen it here before, ususally caused by the same cast of characters. People come and go, it's just a natural progression of BBs.
Also previously mentioned is the season. Lots of outdoor activity and vacations happening for most people right now. I suspect some people will come out of the woodwork eventually.
Stick with it. it has a funny way of changing in a hurry.
And if you don't like what people are posting about, post what YOU want to talk about.
NP: XTC Mummer. Gorgeous, summery CD. |
| Hey, I saw Ebb & Flow in Huntsville once....... | tentoze Jun 19, 2003 1:51 PM | | No....wait...that was Flo & Eddie. :]
Musta been like '92 or '93 at an all-day music fest. They had a lead guitar slinger with them (looked about 15 years old) who could wail. |
| ditto | Javier Jun 19, 2003 5:18 PM | | i'm around and kind of afraid of post anythingh ( anyway seldom i do , did i wrote that correctly or not)after that thread you mention but still seraching for recs from all of you guys. |
| Keep on posting | HYFI Jun 23, 2003 9:38 AM | | don't ever be afraid to post here. What kind of music are you searching for?

| I've been going thru a dumb/dull phase | DLD Jun 19, 2003 9:38 PM | | it must have been that human/animal/human transformation thing two weeks ago.
On the adventurous side, think I'm gonna buy Hail To The Thief. Hell, I love Flaming Lips and Wilco's YHF, this can't hurt too much can it?
Listened to Jorma Kaukonen's Barbeque King tonight. NM vinyl. Excellent and highly diverse album. TItle song is a catchy acoustic ditty, as well recorded as anything I own.
I'm watching American Roots Music on Pubic TV. Started out good. Lots of good old blues, interviews with Jorma talking and Keith Richards slurring. Slowing down a bit now with the folk music part. Still looks like a good watch. Can't believe The Weavers (!!!!) were blacklisted for "red ties". They sang Goodnight Irene fer chrissakes. Some things kinda sukked back in the goode olde days.
NP: Dylan on Roots TV show. |
