Radiohead... what's the deal?tugmcmartin

I was watching MTV2 the other night while my wife was working late and they had like two hours devoted to Radiohead. Played a bunch of videos and had interviews and what not. I'd heard most of the songs before, but never realized it was Radiohead, but i've only been impressed by maybe three tunes of theirs. So, my question: why the heck are they getting all this critical acclaim? What's so amazing about these guys? Yeah, there sound is unique and all, but it does nothing for me. From the looks of some of the past posts in here, i'm undoubtedly in the minority when it comes to opinions on Radiohead. But can someone explain to me why i seem to be the only loser who doesn't get it? (be nice please ;-) )

Often times, indie/alt music tends to scare away less-adventurous types (like I'm starting to become). It's too frickin' "out there" to relate to. Radiohead gets its (vast) share of both critical and popular acclaim because they are definitely pursuing a sound that is outside the mainstream...while maintaining an eerie pop sensibility and ear for melody. No, melody is the wrong word. Sounds that sound cool together. Interesting sonic textures? Whatever.

The other thing is Thom Yorke's voice. It's a love it / hate it sorta instrument, like bagpipes. I fall on both sides of the fence at different times. But the guy, like the band, takes chances. And I have to respect someone for going for broke...and often times hitting it out of the park.

But ultimately, it's music...and therefore completely subjective. No good answers here. Sorry.

Whether it be a sports icon, a celebrity, a kid who saved some children from a fire, etc. The world always needs a person or entity to identify with that is above the level of "normal". Musics the same, if a bamd or artist comes along that's a combinatoion of good/great, is somewhat innovative without scaring peolple and has a charasmatic personality...walla...you have that generations "hero". They're prpelled by the media and general public to a higher than normal level.
I persoanally don't owna single Radiohead album (although OK Computer and Kid A have been on my wishlist forever). I do like most of what I hear by them, but nothings grabbed me to the level where i'd call their work genious either. Just another good band IMO.

Was having this same conversation with a co-worker, I had OK Computer and gave it away, just didn't connect with it, after many listens. Puzzled the bejesus outta me why so much buzz about them and that album. He lent me an earlier album 'The Bends' this weekend, - you ever listen to a CD and mumble to yourself afterwards ...damn good CD ?. MidFi was so right about the voice love/hate thing, the Bends has me on the bandwagon now and will revisit OK Computer.
Eme and I'll roast you a copy, if you want. rrichmon44 at Junodotcom.
