what happened to the days of stickers-n-stuff included with albums?RPM
Nov 6, 2003 8:36 AM
Remember the decals in "Wish You Were Here", the giant Zig Zag paper in "Up In Smoke"? Man, you'd think occasionally the record companies would splurge and throw a little surprise in a cd case.

Those were cool.DarrenH

I still have original pressings of DSotM and WYWH that include all the posters and things. And an original pressing of Tull's TAAB that unfolded into an 11 page newspaper. Those are neat.

The Japanese mini LP CD's from EMI, more specifically, the Pink Floyd series, are neat and include some extra stuff. But those aren't cheap either.

I think the majority of the labels just want to get the product out the least expensive way they can while still charging the consumer $17-$20 for a single CD release.

My advice to you...maf

Buy some vinyl of that favorite band of yours, Godspeed You Black Emperor, you'll be hip deep in little pieces of crap, errrr, memorobilia, that you won't know what to do with. Sorry, don't know if the CD issues are also similarly stocked.

Sorry, that was meant to respond to RPMs orig. post (nt)maf

The new Shins cd had a sticker in it..........
Hey! I just got a sticker with the new CD from....Swish
Nov 6, 2003 9:09 AM
Guided By Voices named Earthquake Glue. It's a small round one, about the size of a political badge (if you're old enough to remember those) with a picture of a kid's face on it and the band's name. Nothing fancy, but hey, whaddya want for free?
I don't think that sticker was entirely free.DarrenH

I mean, you did have to buy the CD, right?

I get your point Swish :-)

Anybody remember the KISS Love Gun?nobody
Nov 6, 2003 9:20 AM
It was a little cardboard cut out pistol that came in the Love Gun record. Wish I still had mine.
guess I'm not buying the right musicRPM
Nov 6, 2003 9:22 AM
glad to hear that some labels are giving music consumers a perk.
I've gotten several stickers lately...tugmcmartin

Seems every purchase i make through Awarestore.com has stickers included with the CDs. Most are artist stickers, sometimes sponsor partner stickers. Seems that usually its the smaller, lesser known artists/labels that throw in the stickers while the larger labels forgo them (gotta save a nickel, don't ya know...), tho the last couple of Dave Matthews CDs i've bought had stickers too.

btw Tug I received your singer/songwriter compsRPM

Haven't had a cahnce to give them a good spin yet, but thank you. I don't recall getting any stickers with "Busted Stuff".
Enhanced CDs = the new free decal?mad rhetorik
Nov 6, 2003 9:52 AM
A lot of new albums are either enhanced CD's or come with concert DVD's these days.
Yep, and.......DarrenH
Nov 6, 2003 10:22 AM
I be it's cheaper for the labels to include an extra CD/DVD than to have stickers and other packaging goodies printed.

The CD/DVD can be done "in house" while the printed goodies would have to be farmed out to contractors.

What would most people want anyway? A sticker the size of a half dollar or a 30 minute concert video of their favorite band. Or in the case of Gov't Mule's newest CD, a 3 hour concert DVD.

Yeah, good point there about bonus discs, guess I'm thinking like a Neanderthal again :-)
Well, the latest Grand Funk cd had stickersDave_G
Nov 6, 2003 10:50 AM
The American Band cd had those finger pointing stickers.

In the new Jethro Tull remasters on "Stand Up" IA writes in the liner notes that when that album originally came out a zillion years ago it had a neat fold out but that it's too expensive to do that anymore.

I think the MFSL cd version did include a stand up thing tho, right?

Ya, the new Steve Hackett (well, new old title Feedback 86), has that bonus crap and it took it upon itself to reload all my internet stuff. Bonus material my ass.

Dave
I've got that GF CD as well.DarrenH
Nov 6, 2003 11:20 AM
And the vinyl version. The vinyl version is very cool. 180 gm and a beautiful translucent yellow. It had those stickers too.

The Japanese remaster of Stand Up had those "pop up" figures as did the Mofi CD.

Bummer with the Hackett CD. Why on Earth, or should I say, how on Earth did that happen? Those "enhancements" should work with your existing Windows Media Player unless it was trying to load something different that conflicted with your browser and/or Windows itself.

Darren
Do you really miss them?Jim Clark

What on earth are you going to do with a bunch band stickers/posters anyway? I guess I can appreciate the sentiment behind a freebie but it's going in the trash can just the same and I KNOW your wife isn't going to appreciate a Primus Sucks sticker on the back of the family sedan (alt. lifestyle smiley face here).

Just give me what I paid for and we'll call it even. Give me a bonus disc and I'll go home very happy. Heck I'd be happy if my BMG just showed up. It's been over two weeks now and I'm getting a bit P.O'd. I placed a small order with CDbaby on Sunday night. The disc arrived yesterday from Oregon. Not entirely thrilled because I was supposed to get a free disc as well but they forgot to include that. Still, I got the disc I paid for and that's better than my previous purchase.

Shellac's 1000 Hurts LP comes with a free CD inside :-)Slosh
Nov 6, 2003 1:55 PM
It's kinda funny. The LP is like 220 gram vinyl in a box with a heavy grade paper liner and nice glossy album notes on separate sheets but the CD is just loosely tossed in the box without even a label on the disc itself so you have to look at it very carefully before putting it in the CD player. BTW, the CD does in fact sound very good.

The new Shins LP came with a poster (haha, CD buyers just got a crappy sticker ;-P). I guess that's cool if you're like 14. !!!'s LP came with a 5" X 5" cover in case you wanted to make a CD-R copy :-)
That's Steve Albini's current outfit, right?mad rhetorik
Nov 7, 2003 7:12 AM
He is a vinyl purist. Rumor has it that during his Big Black days Mr. Albini used compact discs for playing frisbee. Still not sure if the rumor is true, but it would explain a lot in your case. : )
As far as I know it's current.Slosh
Nov 7, 2003 9:24 AM
Yep, that's Albini's band and 1000 Hurts is the most recent album but it's from 2000 so I'm not sure whether Shellac is going to make any more records (although I'm pretty sure they were still touring earlier this year). I love what it says inside the At Action Park CD cover:

This was not mastered directly to metal or pressed into 165 grams of virgin dye-blackened vinyl.

There is, in fact, nothing at all special about the manufacture of this compact disc.

I hope Albini's hard at work engineering the upcoming McLusky album as we speak :-)
so did Electric Magnolia Co.nobody
Nov 7, 2003 11:36 AM
It came with a CD of demo songs, some of which were on the LP as full fledged tracks and some not. It also had a fold out poster in it. Really great packaging on that one, excellent gatefold cover with good artwork, nice poster, free CD. They really outdid themselves on that one, good sounding record too, and good music.

I've picked up a couple records with CD inserts inside. The newest Matmos had that in it, and I know something else did, but I can't remember its name.
Is that some sorta PBS kids show?Slosh
Nov 7, 2003 12:30 PM
I have Songs: Ohia The Magnolia Electric Co. (CD) if that's what you're talking about, and I agree it's good in a 30-odd years old NY kinda way.

The Shellac CD is the entire album, which was a nice surprise since it isn't mentioned anywhere on the packaging and saved me the trouble of making a CD-R copy of the LP.

Nov 7, 2003 12:53 PM
Yup...that's the one I'm talking about.

I wish that tossing the CD in would catch on. I'd gladly pay a couple extra bucks to get a package with both the vinyl and CD. Hell, I've though about picking up that Shellac just for including both the disc and vinyl.

Did the Songs: Ohia CD come wiht the extra disc of demos, or was that just a bonus with the vinyl?

Beck on Bong Loaddean_martin
Nov 7, 2003 8:27 AM
"Odelay" vinyl on Bong Load is a heavy pressing and comes with a bong load bumper sticker. I think the sticker is included in Mellow Gold and Mutations too. Mutations vinyl includes the "hidden" track on a 45rpm.

Of course when you're married w/kids it's kind of hard to sport a bong load bumper sticker on your SUV or 4-door sedan while pulling up to the local elementary school.

More my speed are the cocktail recipes included in the Ultimate Lounge series cds.
