One of the most insightful comments on music I've ever readJ

I've been meaning to do this for awhile...just haven't gotten around to it. I've traded comps with Jack70, though I've probably received more than I've sent & I more than likely owe him at least a few. Which I'll get to, but I have to confess I've been just a bit out of sorts lately. And a lot of what I've gotten in the past year I haven't had the chance to delve into as much as I would've liked. Where I'm living I don't quite have the access to music I did in my last apartment. Getting my ass out of bed to look for a CD to play isn't all that easy at times; previously I didn't have to move too far. Whatever, I should've been more diligent, but I've been amiss. Oh, well.

Anyway, I was going through some comps & noticed that I've gotten at least 10 volumes of his Timemasheen comps. Some I've listened to several times, most I've listened to at least once, one or two I've probably never gotten around to. So I threw on the first one & there's not a clunker on there, which is RARE when you're looking at something where you don't recognize even ONE name. Which leads me to believe that Jackson does the dirty work of sifting through all the CMJ dross to come up with the good stuff? Didn't Swish do that at one time also? You're both better men than me (in spite of that Kinks/Beatles thang which I didn't really follow up on...unnecessary).

Anyway, there's some amazing unheard gems lurking in the Timemasheen series, and I have to recommend it wholeheartedly. But the point is, I had looked at the Timemasheen site back when I first traded with Jackson, & hadn't seen it since. So I took another look, and saw this sentence I don't think I'd seen before that I thought was absolutely amazing. And I believe Jackson has raised this point on this board before, but for whatever reason it hit me harder seeing it on his site.

<b>"I consider writing MELODY as the single most difficult thing to do in music."</b>

I have to agree--and also acknowlege that the snob in me as suggested in the jazz thread below must emerge & proclaim that this sentiment is all the more striking when you think about how many 'best guitarist' threads we've all engaged in in the past few years. There's nothing wrong with having fun by listing faves, of course, but I think that this idea puts all that stuff in perspective--and in its place. Which is where I guess it was already, since most of the regulars here aren't exactly 'Eddie VH is the bitchin'est guitarist that ever lived, dude!' yahoos. Still, whether or not you might agree with this thought, I reckon it has to get ya all at least thinkin' about it...

volumes again, this time in order. I agree with your comments. I've not commented enough on this board about the quality of his comps. But my reaction is almost identical to yours - I don't know most of the groups, and yet there are solid tunes on every volume.

Thanks jackson (and J for bringing this up).

You've piqued my curiosity, Mr. J. Ten whole volumes? That's a lot of disc real estate to cover with consistent quality. Have you considered taking 2 stand-out tracks from each one and making a sampler? Just a suggestion...but if you did, I'd be interested.
I also had been meaning to acknowledge his stuff...his 'live guitar' comp is superb3-LockBox

I also have the 10 or so volumes of the Timemasheen comps, all of which are very well done, but the last two, <i>Beyond These Chilling Winds</i> and the <i>ODDS</i> comp are my favorites so far. And yes, I too am blown away by how much I like this stuff, having never even heard of these guys. This is why I keep hanging around this website. I haven't even sent jack70 anything either, being somewhat leary of it considering his vast knowledge and tireless pursuit of rare tunes. If he reads this post I hope he knows I really would send him something, if it didn't bore him too much.

I'd recommend anyone on this site to inquire about the Timemasheen series, if they haven't already recieved a plethora of comps from this very generous person.
That wasn't me J, and I'm not sure who you were....Swish

outta left field...jack70

Whoa, that was outta left field. I expected to read a link from a local NY publication or something... and <i>it's about me</i>... LOL.

I should say that I DO occasionally update some of the <i>excess verbiage</i> on some of my pages.... but not like I should. I just don't have the time to edit everything "the way I'd like"... but there still might be a kernal of truth, or wisdom in there (somewhere)... anyway I'm glad you took the time to wade through the crap to find a coherent thought or two. It's just my opinion, nothing more.

Unfortunately most of the music stuff there isn't done. For example, I have a long page on the Kinks, and another on Zappa... but I've been editing those pieces <i>FOREVER</i> it seems. The graphics are done but I never get the time to tweak those pages & finish em. The "fave" pages aren't done either... it seemed an easier job at the start... but like most things, I was wrong. (hey, I've got a dozen unfinished speaker & amp projects too).

I only got started in the CD-R stuff a year+ ago, so I'm still getting my feet wet. I purposely avoided making comps of my REAL favorites until I learned a few things and made the expected mistakes... probably the only 2 comps I've done that I put some real effort in were the guitar comp(v4) and Zombies/B.Toes(v5)... (like I said... "excess verbiage") But they are also the "hardest to get into" in many ways for certain listeners (they just aren't "hip"). It's also hard to "get in the right mood" for certain music. I find my musical appetite is always better when "I'm hungry".

BTW, I'm about to send out my latest 2 comps (next week?). I'm pretty confident J & JDaniel will be 2 who get a kick out of one of these as it's something pretty off-the-wall, and up yer alleys. It's what I consider the first <i>good</i> comp I've done.

I have another dozen comps sketched out, but getting the time to do em justice is another thing. All I can say is they are all pretty diverse and very different. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the many Timasheen comps that you've sent me, Gord. I must admit that I haven't listened to the last batch that arrived unexpectedly, but very appreciatively. I remember how impressed I was with some of the earlier ones you sent to me. Great songs by unknowns. I concur with what J said.

Keep up the great work.
