| Hey Swish, about that Jazz disk of yours | JDaniel Nov 7, 2003 1:36 PM | | that you said <b><i>"after sending to about 8 or 9 of you, got absolutely no response one way or the other"</b></i> down in Tug's Jazz thread.
I remembered posting briefly about your <b>Just Jazz</b> comp, because it is a fine comp. I play it from time to time and that Arturo Sandoval song "The Blues Walk" (I think that's the name) is a standout for me.
So I did a search here, and found my post:
<a href="/crforum?13@@.ef978a7/2">JDaniel "All copies of Supertramp & Queen samplers have finally been shipped" 2/20/03 9:53am</a>
That's only slightly more than <i>"no response"</i>, but a response none-the-less. The bad part though is that in reading that post again I discovered that I promised you a jazz comp at some point (DOH!!). Guess I should get busy.

| Hey Swish, about that Jazz disk of yours | HYFI Nov 7, 2003 6:22 PM | | I'm pretty sure I made comments here or in an email. No matter, I still play it and think it's a nice mix of music.

| You probably did and I just never saw it or I forgot.... | Swish Nov 8, 2003 3:27 AM | | so no worries. As I mentioned to JDaniel, I wasn't upset about it or anything, just reaffirming Tug's viewpoint about the lack of respect or interest in jazz on Rave Recs.
Glad you like it by the way.

| You probably did and I just never saw it or I forgot.... | HYFI Nov 8, 2003 5:14 AM | | I listen to lots of jazz but like Yech mentioned, we are a big minority here. I would love to see more postings on jazz related artists/subjects. |
| I stand corrected. I don't think I ever saw your comment.... | Swish Nov 8, 2003 3:24 AM | | so I suppose that was the problem. With my business travel, I sometimes go for days without checking Rave Recs. Hey, I wasn't ticked off at anyone about it, I was just trying to support Tug's view that jazz doesn't get very much respect or chatter on this board. As far as not acknowledging comps that I've received, I'm as guilty as anyone.

| Swish's Custom Create A Jazz Comp | Jim Clark Nov 8, 2003 9:21 AM | | I elected the premade version, anthology of Jazz, and played it again last night in honor of Tug's jazz thread. There are a couple of tracks that I find likeable. At this point I think "Take Five" may be the quintessential jazz track for novices and unbelievers alike. One of the Patricia Barber tracks was pretty cool I think it was called "If This Isn't Jazz". I kind of like the Spyro Gyra track "Serpentine Shelly" although I only liked parts where they bust out the guitars and start rocking. The rest sounds like a commercial for a smooth jazz radio station to me. That would be the rest of the track, not the comp. Most of the rest deals with earlier years and generally speaking didn't really spark much interest. Finally, Diana Krall-no thank you.
Overall this would be one of the comps I'd whip out if guests were over and I wanted to try to pass myself off as someone else. That's not an all together bad idea on occasion.

| Swish's Comp? I'm not sure where you're headed with this... | Swish Nov 8, 2003 12:39 PM | | comment, but did I miss something??? I mean, that's not my jazz comp, and you as much say that in your opening sentence. Could you please 'splain it to me? I'm a little slow these days.
Swish Baby |
| Maybe it was your brother RPM? | Jim Clark Nov 8, 2003 1:11 PM | | Somebody sent me a Jazz anthology comp and I could have sworn it was you. Beeep! Wrong answer I guess. Occasionally it's hard to keep them straight when no name is on the tracklist or disc.
I'm pretty sure someone offered up a bunch of cuts and allowed folks to pick their own tunes for a jazz comp or pick one that was already done up. Surely I didn't imagine the whole thing? I mean, I do have the disc so somebody was kind enough to send it. Seeing your Jazz post below I just figured it must have been you. Next thing you'll be telling me is that 2 + 2 doesn't equal 3, then where will I be?

| whoever that nut was must have had alot of free time on his hands :-) | RPM Nov 9, 2003 7:14 AM | | Heres the song bank from which to choose your create-your own jazz comp".
I've grouped the songs into sub-genres of jazz styles which are preceded by *
(asterisk). I've also included song times, dates of release and some notes (in parentheses) describing the song or the performers. Have fun with this and feel free to post any
questions. I've never seen a create-your-own comp offered on the board before
so this should be an interesting experience.
SONGS TO CHOOSE FROM:
* instrumental/classic/standard/acoustic:
Oscar Peterson Trio D & E 5:11 (1964, piano based)
Dave Brubeck - Take Five (1959, one of the all time classics) 5:24

FYI: the following 6 selections are all off a jazz sampler cd. The material is
VERY old dating back to 1930 and thus the sound quality is not what most
listeners would be accustomed to, however IMO the music quality overshadows
the sound quality.
Hoagy Carmicheal (w/ Jack Teagarden, Jimmy Dorsey, Gene Krupa) - Georgia On
My Mind (recorded Sept. 1930 and sounds like it. The oldest recorded piece of music in my personal collection, but with this lineup it is a bit of jazz history)
Jack Teagarden w/Louis Armstrong St. James Infirmary (1946, live blues/jazz)
Count Basie - Moten Swing (1932) 3:22
Duke Ellington - Body and Soul (1940, an interesting version with the lead melody
being played on an upright acoustic bass) 3:04
Dizzie Gillespie - A Night In Tunisia (1946) 3:02
Meade Lux Lewis - Honky Tonk Train Blues (1936, an incredible solo piano peice)

chicks! :-) 2:45

Dave Grusin - Powerwave (early 80s, modern, heavy use of keyboards, generic yet enjoyable) 5:10
Dave Valentin - Enciendo (early 80s, upbeat latin rhythm w/flute) 3:31
Dave Valentin - Very Nice Indeed (similar to above track only less Latin)
3:50
Chieli Minucci - Forever Hold Your Peace (early 80s, mellower acoustic guitar based
track, very pretty) 5:25

| Sign those discs! | Jim Clark Nov 9, 2003 8:22 AM | | Actually I should just remember, sorry about that. I'm glad it was you, I was starting to think maybe J sent that one since he uses that particular brand of discs quite often. Well, thanks for the entertainment Friday night.
I did pick up a pretty decent stack of discs both at the used store and the library and I can say with complete honesty that your disc is better than any of those so far.

| I'm usually the one admonishing others about I.D.'ing discs | RPM Nov 9, 2003 11:37 AM | | Guess that one slipped thru the cracks, sorry.
I can see whereas that disc wasn't up your alley, the fact that you liked a few tracks is a bonus. Jazz is a very fickle form, there's some I love and some I simply can't tolerate. Hey wait, that doesn't only apply to jazz, it applies to all music genres! Smiley-winky.
