| Copy protection or play protection? Grrrrrrrrr. | ForeverAutumn Nov 9, 2003 4:50 PM | | I picked up A Perfect Circle last weekend. Before I go into my rant, let me just say that this is a fantastic CD and may just be my pick for fave of 2003. It's like Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater and Cold Play were put in blender and blended into a frosty metal treat.
Okay. Rant time....
This CD is copy protected. I'm okay with that. I understand the reasoning behind the copy protection. I don't like it, but I understand it.
What pisses me off about this, is that the copy protection keeps the CD from being playable on some CD players. I listen to CDs in four places, the office; my home; my car; my husband's truck.
I took the disk to the office to listen to it during the day. Well, the damn thing won't play on my laptop. So, I can't listen to this CD at work.
My husband and I were out in his truck today and I took the disk with us so that he could hear it while we were cruising around the city. It won't play in his truck. Granted it's a factory player, but you would think that it would be compatable with all CDs. My car has a factory player in it also and the disk plays fine in my car.
I paid $18 for this disk and I can't listen to it in 50% of the places that I would like to play it. I think that I should be entitled to 50% of my money back. I don't mind a band or record company copy protecting their music. But I don't think that they are doing themselves any favours when the technology that they are using interferes with the consumers enjoyment of the disk. Based on this experience, I would think twice before purchasing another copy protected CD. Although, I guess in it's own way the copy protection works. You won't be too quick to copy something that you can't listen to in the first place! |
| You should be able to rip the tracks to HD with EAC | Davey Nov 9, 2003 5:29 PM | | I don't have the latest APC but all of the protected discs I have can be ripped with EAC ( http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ ). Then just play it from there and/or make a CD-R for the truck. Inconvenient and kind of idiotic, especially considering you can download it and play it on your computer for free, but if you do the "right" thing and buy it, you can't play it on your computer :-) |

I had some computer problems and EAC is no longer working on my computer, but I'll reinstall it when I have time and try it. I knew that EAC would copy from enhanced discs but I didn't know that it could rip from protected disks too. Thanks for the advice.
Cheers! |
| It plays on all of my CD players just fine... | Slosh Nov 10, 2003 12:19 AM | | ...including my (Mazda) factory head unit (which is actually made by Pioneer). Had no problem ripping either. Maybe mine isn't from the copy protected batch? |
| Funny - my copy plays ok | Mike Nov 10, 2003 4:04 AM | | It works fine on the cd player at home, car player and portable, and I've ripped a track from it too. Mine is a UK EMI/Virgin copy.
In my experience lots of cd's mention copy protection but I haven't found one which won't play or rip?
Cheers

Mine plays well on all hardware. I bought mine at Sam's (the Record Man), for what it's worth.
Btw, I'd take it back to where you bought it. Strange that my southern Ontario disc works and yours does not.
