Dream Theater's Newest Effort....kingcrim05

....is Train of Thought.

Purchased it today and am currently on my second listen. This is one DARK HEAVY album by their standards. I'm still looking for the Petrucci I've come to love on previous albums but i'm not sure if he's going to shine through on this one like he has in the past for me.

A definite must-own if youv'e ever heard of progressive metal but their "Scencs From a Memory" is still their ultimate masterpiece.

I thought Scenes from a Memory and Falling Into Infinity were fantastic, production-wise, but Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence was kind of compressed and flat-sounding, with lots of distortion.

The production is a big change for DT, once again.

YOU CAN HEAR MYUNG. Perhaps the best thing to ever happen to DT if you really think about it. His amazing bass play can actually be heard on a lot of different passages down. The down-side to this however, is Rudess (keyboard)gets drowned out now. I've read that a lot of what Rudess is doing is on the lower octaves with his left hand but he's just not in the mix as much as i'd like.

As usual, guitar and drums are in the front where they've always been. Drums sounds are a little weak though and Petrucci can sound like he's playing just one song on the whole album at times.

It's funny because when i listen to one song on the album, i'll catch myself humming a different song on the album at the same time. Usually if i'm listening to something musically, i have a very hard time even thinking about other music.

Maybe i've been brainwashed?
I'd say that is an improvement.mad rhetorik

John Myung is an amazing bass player, and I didn't like how the band regulated him to a session machine. I always want to hear him pull off a hot bass solo now and then. (I know J., bass solos are "overplaying" : P )

On the other hand, I don't like Jordan Rudess. While his rhythm work is decent, he spends too much of his time showing off. Keyboard solos don't appeal to me on the visceral level that a drum or guitar solo do--they feel artificial and forced to my ears. DT's previous two keyboard players, especially Kevin Smith (I think that's his name), were very tasteful players. I like that; I don't need another Rick Wakeman.

Of course Petrucci and Portnoy dominate the show. While they can be a little excessive, if I want to hear some ridiculous guitar and drumming chops Dream Theater satisfies that wild itch. After all, I can always pull out my copy of Pink Flag if it gets to be too much. : )

I beleive you're thinking of Kevin Moore. They've had him, then Derek Sherenian, and now Jordan Rudess. Jordan on this album DOES sound forced, that's because you can't hear him during a lot of it. If you do, he's just striking chords, which is a dramatic change from where they were.

Best part of this album is Myung though, I have to say that. A lot of the guitar lines are starting to catch on with me though.

3.5/5
