| Drummer Tony Thompson losing battle with cancer | J Nov 13, 2003 12:21 AM | | Actually, it's been posted in more than one place that he's actually passed. I'm not a fan of everything that he did, but he has a pretty impressive resume. He started with LaBelle, was a member of Chic, a session player on mega-huge records such as David Bowie's 'Let's Dance' and Madonna's 'Like A Virgin,' as well as one or two that weren't as successful (Mick Jagger's 'She's The Boss,' Debbie Harry's 'Koo Koo'). Then he joined the Power Station, which is not a favorite of mine, and also played (with Phil Collins) with Led Zeppelin at Live Aid. He continued on with session work over the past 15+ years, playing with Duran Duran, Rod Stewart, and others, but apparently he's in bad shape & has been wasting away with no medical insurance. Whether or not he's passed on at this point, the idea of anyone in that situation is kinda gut-wrenching. But there's not much I can really add to that. He was a notable musician involved with a lot of prominent, successful, and popular work, who will obviously be missed. |
