| Better the devil ya know than the one ya don't | Davey Nov 14, 2003 11:13 AM | | Just wondering where you head when you stop at your favorite music store. Do you check all those bands you're already well familiar with, looking for a new release or some repackaging of an old release you already have, or do you check to see what they have in the new release display rack, or do you get advice from people that work there, or do you try to find something you've heard about, maybe at a site like this, but haven't heard yet?
I guess I've kind of gotten to the point that I have enough devils I already know to last me the rest of my time here so I pretty much just go for the stuff I haven't heard before, things I read about here or at other websites. I hardly ever buy more than a couple releases by anyone nowadays. Of course, most bands don't last more than a couple releases anymore in today's music business, but that's a different devil story :-) |
| What is the "music store" of which you speak? | Swish Nov 14, 2003 11:31 AM | | I rarely go to my local stores because they basically SUCK! Their selection is bereft of nearly everthing I want to buy and their prices are insane ($17-19 each? F**k them!). Most of my buying is done through DeepDiscountCD.com or Amazon.com, both of whom offer free shipping (Amazon does some of the time). Without the PA 6% salestax and prices usually in the $10-14 range, I'm quite the happy camper.
When I do hit a store in the metropolitan areas, I rarely ask for advice, I just read your posts and make my list. :-)

| How come you aren't at the "new" place? | Davey Nov 14, 2003 11:51 AM | | Yeah, most of my shopping is online too, but I still like to hit the locals for a quick fix now and then. But you're right, seldom do I leave with what I went in looking for though :-)
There is one of those Virgin megastores around here in a monster mall and they have almost everything and about a million listening stations but it's not too convenient, and I hate monster malls anyway. And Fry's, and Best Buy, and Circuit City and Walmart and all those, but they don't usually have anything I really want. There's a cool little indie store called Stinkweeds that's only about 5 miles from me in Tempe near ASU (online too) which has tons of neato stuff at good prices so I'd be inclined to spend time there if I was into hanging around record stores, which I don't do much anymore. Still fun to drop by occasionally and look around. Maybe hear something new. |
| Ahh, Stinkweeds. My kinda place. | Swish Nov 14, 2003 1:42 PM | | That's one funny name Davey dude. The only record stores where I actually buy anything are in State College, PA (the home of Penn State), and a store near Philly called Main Street Music, although they're kinda small. The college towns always have the best stores, don't they?
As for the "new" place, I just followed the steps that Chris mentioned in his post and was able to register and log on, but I am not happy at all with the look and feel of it. I tried to respond to a post and was told I didn't have access to that part of the forum. I must have done something screwy (go figure), but I was in a hurry so I'll fool with it later and will probably figure it out.

| You have to get your account activated | Davey Nov 14, 2003 1:48 PM | | For some reason it doesn't work automatically for a lot of people, myself included, so you have to personally (and politely :-)) ask Chris to turn you on. I'm still on the bubble, like you and a lot of others, but he seems to be making progress. |
| I'm in, but it's still a royal pain in the arse (sigh). | Swish Nov 14, 2003 6:15 PM | | I guess it'll take some getting used to, but I was fairly please with this old format, despite it's warts and limitations. |
| Why aren't you guys over at the new forum? | Snowbunny Nov 14, 2003 11:58 AM | | I miss you over there. :-(
And I can make really cute frowny faces over there!
