| Anyone heard the Echo & The Bunnymen remasters yet? | Davey Nov 14, 2003 2:31 PM | | I guess all 5 were released about a month ago in Europe with lots of bonus tracks. Haven't heard much about them yet and don't know when they will be released here. o way I would pay the $19 import price for them but I imagig they should be a decent price when more widely available so I migh pick one up. Warners is the worst of the majors for remasters, though. They're almost always bad sounding with lots of needless compression and EQ. Hope these are better than their normal stuff. Maybe so if they were done in Europe :-) |
| I got two... | Dusty Chalk Nov 14, 2003 9:17 PM | | Ocean Rain and Crocodiles, will probably get the other three tomorrow. Got me the "special" discount. Don't know nuthin' 'bout no kawm-presh-un, though, wouldn't know nuthin' 'bout 'dat. (Good thing I'm not like a professional musician or anything like that, neh?) Actually, I do believe they are compressed. But I can't compare them to the original CD releases. Especially since I don't have them on CD (only on buried vinyl somewhere). |
| Followup | Dusty Chalk Nov 15, 2003 9:36 AM | | Actually, (I'm listening to them now), they don't sound overly compressed, just typically compressed. I.E. they sound like typical rock recordings from the 80's (the original compression, vs. any new compression). The snares (and other drums) have nice snap, with only a small aural halo around them. Don't recall there being anything new. Yeah, they're kind of bright, so Troy would probably like them. Anyway, I'll definitely be getting the others at some point. Probably today. |
| Thanks for the info, so are those the imports? | Davey Nov 15, 2003 10:16 AM | | If so, why not wait for the US release as they should be cheaper? Of course, it's your money and if you wanna spend it on Echo & the Bunnymen imports, who am I to argue? Are any of the bonus tracks more than filler? I don't have any of them on CD to compare either. In fact, I was never a huge Bunnymen fan in their day and only have Ocean Rain on vinyl so was looking to expand my collection just a bit with a CD or two. What would be your first two choices? The ones you already have? Crocodiles and Ocean Rain? Was the last album in the series with Bedbugs and Ballyhoo any good? I adore the version of that song by Voyager One on their last album but don't think I've heard any of the other songs. Hey, have you heard the British Sea Power disc some of us have been talking about? A lot of the Bunnymen in their sound, but they don't sound like the Bunnymen. Same with Joy Division and some others that are obvious influences on BSP.
Maybe I'll move this thread to the new board once they give me permission to post over there. |
| Maybe because I didn't know they were coming out domestically | Dusty Chalk Nov 15, 2003 1:24 PM | | D'oh! ...or rather... Doh! Hmmm...they both look correct...? Anyway, Ocean Rain is my favourite. I'll be on a E&tBm listening spree tomorrow, will post more later. Besides they were only like US$10-11 for me. |
| Wow, you get a super discount! | Davey Nov 15, 2003 1:31 PM | | Just kidding around since I've no idea when they will be out in the US either. I've only seen the imports listed at $19 without any discount so far. Is that a special discount you get for being a volume buyer? :-)
Thanks for the advice and keep me and my fellow "new forum" exiles posted about what you think of the series after your listening spree. |
| Bunny essentials | maf Nov 16, 2003 9:13 AM | | No, not that Bunny!
Ocean Rain and Crocodiles are the two essentials. If you like Ocean Rain, then their self-titled follow-up is also likely to tickle your fancy. Perhaps their most understatted album, of the pre-break up albums. This one sees McCulloch starting to rein in his typical vocal histrionics. AMG even calls it their best since Crocodiles, I wouldn't go that far, but it is my 3rd favorite bunnymen album, with lots of nice tunes...All In My Mind, Bombers Bay, Lips Like Sugar, All My Life, The Game. If it were me Croc, OR and s/t are the three I'd get, depending on bonus tracks. BTW, bonus tracks to look for...Do It Clean, (Great song, not sure if this was on the original CD release of Crocodiles, it was not on the vinyl), The Puppet, Never Stop (another great song), and Bring on the Dancing Horses.

| Bonus Bunnymen | Dusty Chalk Nov 16, 2003 12:40 PM | | Not to be confused with Bunnywoman. "Do It Clean" is one of the bonus tracks on Crocodiles I do not see "The Puppet" anywhere. "Never Stop (Discotheque)" is a bonus track on Porcupine, and "Bring on the Dancing Horses (Extended Mix)" is a bonus track on the self titled one. I am definitely enjoying the bonus tracks, for the most part. They are certainly more than filler. The live tracks are of a fidelity acceptable for live tracks. Hey, I just noticed there is a box set (Crystal Days). It's got "The Puppet" on it. Actually, it's got a lot of tracks on it that these don't. I may have to get it. Eventually. I'm in no rush. Got enough Bunnymen to hold me over for a while, methinks. Oh, and, Davey? No, I've not heard British Sea Power yet. |
