| ASL AQ1003DT | RooX Jun 12, 2002 7:15 AM | | looking at picking this integrated up for my main system. It is kind of a beggining thing, and i am getting away from home theater. Will this amp have enough power to drive my speakers? they are NHT vt-4's. I love the mto death, for the price they absolutly sing, but they are not the most efficient speakers (87db, 8ohm) and im worried the 30watts of tube power might nont be enough. I was using a rega brio (old style) and it did quiet a good job at getting them going at 35watt (solid state) My dealer thinks there is a possibility the combo of my speakers and the amp will sound good, but he is worried about the power, as he hasnt ever heard this combo. Im also using a cambridge d500se cdp. Give me some opinions all, also any other recommendation? |

I recently hear an 11 or 17 watt Nuvista Tube amp driving the Nautilus 801(Considered a mega power hungry speaker). The sound was sheer magic. Now they were not going to play to deafening levels but fairly loud. The Jolida 202a(which is similar to the AQ1003DT ran the CDM 1NT at loud levels while remaining tight in the bass department and relatively uncongested. The 1NT is 88db sensitive and supposedly needs bags of power.
As Paul said if the Rega runs it the 1003 should be even less trouble as it will clip much softer. Many theorize that 1 Watt of tube power is equivalent to 2 or 3 watts of Solid State power. Even though a Watt is a Watt...Tubes sound louder than equivelantly powered solid state amps. Stereophile magazine had an article on this http://www.stereophile.com/printarchives.cgi?357 |

| Proven in a DBT no doubt.................. | RGA Aug 27, 2002 5:11 PM | | It's not hard. Push the SS amp into clipping and do the same with the tube amp...measure the volume as soon as the SS amp blows the tweeter in the speaker at the same level of the tube amp and see how much farther you can push the tube amp before the tweeter blows. |
