| Problem with hissing sound produced by tube amp | walther Jun 30, 2002 8:45 AM | | hi everybody,
There is a hissing sound produced by my Audio Innovation tube amp on the right channel of the speaker. It is not the volume control as the hissing sound is still there when I turned down the volume.
Have anyone encountered this before? What could it be? A spoiled valve? or circuit problems?
Plse advise. Thankss |
| Try swapping tubes first............... | Chris Garrett Jun 30, 2002 5:41 PM | | Start with the INPUT drivers and then go from there to the power tubes. If you have a spare, change that first. Sounds like an INPUT driver gone bad.

thanks for yr help. I experimented with the input tubes and think that it is the fault.

| Well.................. | Chris Garrett Jul 4, 2002 7:47 PM | | I personally use the ECC82/12AU7, 6DJ8/6922/7308, and 6SN7s for my input drivers on the two preamps (Blue Circle BC 3.1 Galatea, Bottlehead Foreplay) and my Cary SLAM 100 monoblocs, however, for the 12AX7/ECC83, the Mullards are pretty tough to beat.
I've picked up a few pair over the years just to have and I just sold my buddy some nice Raytheon 5751 windmill getters and some Tung Sol 12AX7s. He enjoys the Raytheons in his Metronome tube dac. The 5751s aren't exactly the same electrically, but they generally do substitute for the ECC83. The Mullards, as I said above, are the creme de la creme in this 12AX7 variation, but they can be $100 a pair in NOS (new old stock) condition, or even more.
Go to http://www.audioasylum.com and visit the TUBE ASYLUM.
There is a ton of info. Use the SEARCH engine.
Good luck, Chris |
| Well.................. | walther Jul 9, 2002 5:57 AM | | Hi Chris
Just noticed that my amp (audio innovation 500) uses 3 ECC83s and 2 ECC88 tubes for the pre-amp side. Do u mind explaining why and for which function (volume, power, tone etc) cause I took out all the tubes and forgot where it came from!! (I have little technical knowledge).
By the way, you r the only one that is very confident that my pre-tubes need changing. All the shops asked me to send in the amp (I am reluctant cause its very heavy!!). Have u experienced hissing sound from your amp?
One of the shop recommended Electro Harmonix ECC83s. Its about US10 per piece. Is it OK?

| Well.................. | walther Jul 9, 2002 6:07 AM | | In addition to problem with my tube amp, there is a small static sound from my Audiolab 8000A (transistor amp)right channel?? Is it the pre-amp circuit?
Well, guess everthing is starting to fall apart.

| helpful tips | dr_no Jul 12, 2002 11:49 AM | | Dear Walther, Either it was a tube, probably right after the volume control or a resistor that is causing the hissing problem in the right channel. As far as tubes, EH or Svetlanas are good and reasonably priced. Xtra: Can also try demagnetizing tube with hair dryer (motor part) to see if you notice a difference. Sometimes you do, sounds smoother. Works well on CDs too. Hope this helps Walther. |
