Tube CD player with solid state amp...Kyle
Aug 13, 2002 3:38 PM
I'm trying to create a reasonably simple and economical system that will control a 5.1 HT and sound fantastic with music. I'm a little concerned with the 'musicality' of some of the HT amps and receivers but really don't want to build two separate systems.

I considered buying a 7 channel amp and then running an additional tube preamp through the extra channels--but that seems kind of convoluted.

Is the answer simply to get a tube CD player (the new Jolida JD100?) and connect it to a HT preamp with an analog bypass mode? Would this help warm up my sound for music and keep things relatively simple?

Thanks

Actually, the tube CD player would be a better way to go to help tame any harshness from your music listening. A lot would depend on how you want to set up your system. Pre/processor, preamp with external processor, reciever.
If you were to go with a seperate preamp and outboard processor, you still have many choices. Some people like all seperates while many want to keep it simple.
Your last idea would be the best way to keep it simple and still have a good quality music source but you don't want to run through a bypass mode if this bypasses the volume control. You would still need to control volume from your pre (for the CD player). The Jolida is a great unit by the way.
Good luck and happy listening.

Ditto on the Jolida. Three years back I was putting together a new system around my newly acquired Apogee Stage ribbon speakers. I bought a decent Bryston pre amp and a B&K Amp to power the Apogees. Reading the reviews here guided my decisions. I bought a "best buy" Sony ES carrousel to replace an old Onkyo. The sound was pinched, harsh and thin. A friend brought over his Jolida 601 cd player. We compared one song and then I didn't hesitate removing the Sony to take back to Good Guys the next day. The affect the Jolida had on the sound is comparable to taking three aspirins for a bad head ache.

I now have a sixteen thousand dollar system and still the front end remains Jolida, the JD-100. I no longer need it to tame the solid states, but for the money, in this fast changing audio economy, it can't be beat.
